My S-Max is having problems starting first time. It often takes a couple of goes to get it running, although I can sometimes short-cut the problem by applying a little accelerator just after the motor turns over.

My regular dealer has diagnosed it as a problem with the dual-mass flywheel (I thought it was just the glow plugs not warming up properly) and wants up to £1500 to change it all.... Read more

Do you mean the startermotor engages but fails to turn the engine in which case a faulty flywheel ring gear is possible normally cured by turning the flywheel a quarter turn.

I have a 2007 57 reg Ford Focus. I bought the car in January from a Vauxhall main dealer. The car had just under 14,000 miles on the clock with FSH. After about 4 days the car at times would not start (the engine turned over when the key was turned in the ignition but it wouldn't fire up). I took the car back to the dealer who kept ir for a week. They acknowledged it had a problem when starting & gave it to a local Ford dealer. They say they checked all the usual in the engine (ignition, battery etc) and did all the diagnostic checks but could find no fault. After taking the car back, the problem continued on and off. At the end of February I gave the car to my local garage to look at. They had it a full day but again having done all checks including diagnostic, they could not find any problem.

From then till now the problem persists. There are good days and bad days. Sometimes it will start 1st time. When it doesn't start, the engine turns over fine but just won't fire up. It can take anything upto 2 minutes of constant turning the key in the ignition to start. Other times it will start at the 2nd or 3rd attempt. ... Read more

Hi, i had this problem, i changed the spark plugs, ignition leads, used redex nothing helped. I repaired the instrument cluster, still not solved. I was adviced to change the coil pack, after i change it it was fine for few months, now the problem is back, could be the coil pack again, the problem is the same, sometimes randomly is not starting from first attempt, but only when the engine is warm. I used a bosch coil pack from euro car parts...i will use a genuine one, which is bosch aswell but from my experience with the rear droplinks ive used lemforder, than i changed them.with genuine which are lemforder too but very diffrent quality so hopefuly bosch made for FoMoCo will be better

Hopefully some of you have had similar experiencesm or can shed light on mine.

Have a 2005 Mondeo with 110K mls. Economy (45+ mpg) and power have always been fine since buying it with 80k mls. In fact the power is more 130ps than 115ps. However it has always chucked out excessive black smoke under acceleration.... Read more

The TDCI engines in the mondeos are quite well known for this type of smoking. We used to have a 2004 mondeo TDCi which did exactly the same thing. When we asked the technician at the ford garage he said that these engines quite often do this. If the DPF is clogged, it may help a little if it is replaced/cleaned etc. TBH though, there is nothing wrong with the car as a lot of these mondeos i have seen also do this :)

A friend is having terrible problems with her 07 Shogun (2.2 Diesel I think), it has again let her down by switching to limp home mode for the 5th time. Mitsu dealer is vague and blames a filter. The car is an Auto but it gets good regular motorway runs to get it hot and it's not used for short journeys or school runs. It's also used for towing a 25' caravan.

Once again the car's off the road and the unhelpfully vague Mitsubishi dealer can't reset or fix it for a week. I suspect something else - if it happens again the car will be sold - has anyone any pointers? Diesel fuel? Additives? Injectors or sensors?... Read more

Hello everybody,

Since this is No 1 in Google, as promised in May I'm following up about my friend's Shogun that goes into limp-home mode regularly -- as expected, 5 months later it's gone into limp-home for the 6th time, the engine management light came on and the main Mitsubishi dealer in North East Lincs charged £85 to 'reset' it....

Hi,

I had several issues driving yesterday. My cruise control no longer worked. The engine sounded like it was shaking itself to bits and struggling and every now and again when i started her a steering wheel power assist error came on with the rev counter dropping to near 0....

Earlier today my wife 'phoned to say that her 02 Scenic DCi had broken down (luckily not far from our house), apparently the engine had simply cut out and would not restart. I tried to start the car, the starter was spining OK, battery had plenty of power, half a tank of diesel, but no joy although once or twice it sounded like it tried to fire up. I noticed the engine management light, ABS and stop lights were illuminated when the ignition was on.

Called Green Flag, chap plugged tester in and then proceeded to remove the EGR valve. He cleaned the valve a bit, put it back in and the car started, he increased the RPMs and all looked good, no smoke, no odd noises. He switched the engine off and tried to re-start, but the car was having none of it. He tried the tester again and informed me there was an EGR fault, get a new one he tells me and all will be fine, and proceeds to recover the car home.... Read more

Sounds like a sensor coil is breaking down.

I bought a brand new Mondeo 2.0 TDCI Titanium 163 BHP from a Ford dealer in April. I took care to run it in as the manual instructed and completed 1800 miles before I took it for it's first proper drive. I did a round trip 120 miles and worked the car fairly hard. The next morning I didn't have the stereo on and realised that it sounded like a transit when I accelerate over 3000rpm. I informed the dealer who did an engine management software update and told me to try it out. It is still the same and worst when cold. I need some advice as to what could be wrong, to take forward to the dealer. I don't want to get fobbed off as I don't think a new car should sound like this. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks. Read more

I suppose I wasn't exactly clear with my post. I put down diesel knock but it's actually a tappet sound over the normal diesel sound. I'm going to take it to an alternative mechanic for a road test to make sure it's not just me! Also, I filled up at Tesco, so I intend to let the tank run down as far as possible and fill up with BP ultimate to see if there's a difference and I also noticed that the oil level has dropped to the half way mark. I don't know if it'll make a difference, as half way is safe enough but I'll ask the other mechanic whether I should top it up to the max. thanks to everyone for their input. I'll update the post with the outcome!

Hi Peter

You was right it is a preassure sensor thats what it said on the mechanics labtob when he wired it up to the car. But he is not sure which sensor he has already changed the MAF the sensor which is attched to the manifold. Would you please tell me which preassure sensor you was refering to in your last post as this would resolve the problem with the turbo. just to recap you after going on motorway after 30 miles or so the turbo cuts off goes into limp mode but its ok doing local journeys....

Hi,

I have a problem with my Corsa that I recently bought second hand. It has had a non-manufacturers radio installed and from taking it out it looks like quite a poor job has been done of installing it. The main problem is that the radio will not turn on or off with the ignition. It will turn on manually but that means you must remember every time you leave the car to switch it off.... Read more

I've looked at the stereo and its wiring again and on closer inspection its in much more of a mess than I previously thought. I think what we're going to have to do is take it to a auto electrician. Thanks for your help anyway guys.
