Just wanted some thoughts on an issue I have with a two and a half year old MX5 which is still under Mazda's warranty. A few months ago I noticed a growling noise on idle just after start up from cold and when the revs had got back down to 1000 and under. This disappeared when the clutch was depressed but reappeared when the clutch was released. It also disappeared after the car was warmed up. I suspected a noisy gearbox bearing, possibly the main shaft which I think stops turning when the clutch is depressed. The Mazda dealer eventually agreed there was a noise but said it was nothing to worry about and Mazda wouldn't dismantle to investigate anyway! I've never heard such a noise on any manual car I've had, some with very high mileages, so I don't know if this is unique to this car. I certainly don't recall hearing it when the car was bought from new.
The noise has got louder and I'm even more concerned there is a problem with a bearing, which if is the case I want sorted out in warranty. To try and alleviate any fight with the dealer I'm thinking of taking it to a gearbox specialist first to confirm that what I'm hearing is an issue. If they confirm I can take it back to Mazda with some sort of backup. Any views on whether this is a good approach, or should I take it straight back to Mazda? Luckily not having to claim under warranty before in the past, if the dealer disagrees there is a problem what recourse do I have in these situations? Read more

Hi All...
Having initially wondered why the top end version of the current Webroot antivirus was so much more reasonable than the usual Norton/Macaffee efforts, I have just found the explanation - it slowed down my web browsing to chronic levels!! I'm running a fairly middle of the road nearly new Toshiba laptop on Win 7 Home Premium, and doing nothing above usual surfing activity. Anybody else had any problems with this software? Read more

My pride and joy Primera P12 estate was hit in the rear whilst parked, the car would not start EMS light on? Car was towed to the specified body shop for repair by the insurance company. Body work repaired the car was taken to a Nissan dealer who stated no faults were shown in the diagnostics and the engine has a serious fault with no compression on cylinders 1 and 3? Insurers have refused to investigate any further and the car being returned.
I cannot understand how my car can be parked up outside my house working perfectly well and then get hit in the rear by another car, suffer serious damage to the engine and the insurance company are refusing to even investigate? I have witness who can verify the car was working perfectly well hours before the accident.... Read more
I wouldnt say its impossible to happen. Having a battle with an insurance company is often more stress than its worth.
May be can you find CCTV fottage of you driving home or even parking outside your house before it was hit ?provong that it was running prior to being hit ! . May be an independant inspector may be able to do a report, he should be able to determine the "direction of shear " that in its self may point to when the cam snapped. I myself are inclined to believe it but proving it is another dimension altogether....

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but the car should have been left in 1st gear if facing down the hill.
This sounds like a situation where you need expert help. An engineer to state what is likely to have caused the failure. Friends, neighbours or colleagues to state that the car was working fine immediately prior to the accident. And finally, a lawyer to write a cardboard letter to the Third party to show you mean business.
Hi,
I'm just about to get my car serviced,Two dealers prices varied quite a bit.So I'm comparing llike with like does anyone have a definitive list of the items covered. One mentioned that transmisssion fluid is an optional extra. Is coolant & brake fluid changed.Cheers for the help. Read more
Hi,the cars is just over four years old, manual transmission.I'm not too mechanical & just presumed that there was a standard list of items at each service interval. If brake fluid is needed & specced I'd happily pay but just thought each Honda dealer would quote for the same items so comparisons could easily be made.
Our 2008 Focus drives veryu well but annoyingly, on accelaration in 1st & 2nd at say 2500 RPM something underneath seems to resonate. I'm guessing this may be the neat shield around the exhaust, is this a known problem, and which part of the heat shield is it likely to be ? Read more
The heatshield on my old Focus used to rattle.
When I got under the car to check it out, it was obvious that the shield itself had deteriorated around the securing points in a few places and had come away from the body of the car. The holes that had formed were now larger than the hexagonal-shaped fittings used to secure it....

Have you checked the gearbox oil for quantity and quality?
