1 litre of Mobil 1 ESP is just £8.50 at the moment. Compared to what I used to pay this is a bargain - the cheapest I ever found it was at the Skoda dealer and they wanted £12.

5 litres is £32.... Read more

Hi

I've seen a basic 1.8 VVTi Colour Collection 05 plate Avensis that's done 70k for £4350. It has all but the last service, although the last service was probably done by an independent garage. All other services were main dealer. Generally very clean but the boot has a leak I think - something that seems to happen to these. It will be sold serviced and MOTd and it has the standard 3 month warranty. Does this seem like a good deal? And does anyone know about anything other than what HJ has said to look out for? It will replace an old Ford Mondeo that seems to be having a few too many problems, and my wife's newer Mondeo doesn't fare much better. Read more

There was a thread not so long ago about the Mazda 6 and the BRs tended to enthuse about them.

And I bet I was amongst their number, rabitting on about the one I've owned for nearly eight years. I must change the record...

The Turbo on my 2005 1.9 Diesel Touran blew on Saturday in a cloud of smoke. My car has done just over 70k miles. Dealer wants £2200 to replace both the Turbo and the Cat. An independent (Bosch Service Network) garage has quoted less than £1300 for the same work using a new (not refurb)Turbo Technics Turbo.

Is this worth the £900 saving or should play safe and get the dealer to do it? Read more

If you shop around you will probably get it done for even less.

My sons Passat with 1.9PD did the same, although at 149k miles....

The idle speed is controlled by the module which opens/closes the ABV/ISCV /IAC or whatever it's being called this week. The switch on the end of the throttle rod tells the module that the throttle is closed and the engine speed is then controlled by the valve-as soon as the throttle is opened, the engine speed is then a function of the throttle opening.

Is it me, or do Haynes manuals seem to be less accurate / more error prone than they were? This was prompted by a post in Technical regarding a 406 steering rack, which reminded me of a time my brother in law and I used a Haynes manual to change a steering rack on a 306 D Turbo. All was going well until we came to physcially extract the old rack from the car. We spent a good hour trying to extract it from the side of the car instructed in the book, and failed. In a moment of inspiration, we manouevred it the other way, and it slid straight out. And yes, we followed their definition of left and right explained at the start of the manual.

I've come across others recently as well. The instructions for changing the indicator stalk on my S60 involved a whole list of work (probably 40 mins worth) including removing the airbag and steering wheel, and the resulting need to lock some component on the column as a result that was completely unnecessary. Shroud off, undo two screws, pull old stalk off, push new stalk on, do up two screws, shroud on was all that was needed.... Read more

It emerges that there is a known software problem with the Hyundai i30 tuner. The ad hoc traffic announcements disappeared from mine and I had a new one fitted under warranty this morning. It works, but the wavebands have been changed to FM1, FM2, FMA, AM and AMA i.e. there is no longwave now. Read more

Today I had my i30 radio changed, again!, and it might be too early to say but i'm optimistic that it will now work ok and that I can leave the ta turned on and still get good reception.

Another problem cropped up with the wheel pressure sensors. I thought I had a slow puncture but it turned out to be the sensor valve leaking. The Hyundai garage tried to blame me for this saying I had disturbed the rubber washer on the seal !!! After a long discussion they have agreed to change the seals at their cost ( I had discovered a second wheel leaking air through the rubber seal on the sensor). Be warned, when they leak air, it leaks very quickly and could be dangerous. If you have recently had any tyres changed and the garage have disturbed this rubber washer then you may have problems. Hyundai have only recently warned their dealerships about this but it has not been passed on to the customer.

General question - I had a clutch master cylinder replaced a few months ago due to the clutch pedal getting stuck down on my Golf. This cured the fault until a week ago when now it is back. Car into garage and they feel needs a new cylinder again and said yes that the part is covered by warranty. Gave me 2 options - take car to VW (part was apparently from them initially) let them take it apart and if found to be faulty the work will be free or (ii) they will do it, I'd pay in full for work to be done and the new part but then garage will send part back under warranty and reimburse me (but labour would remain payable).

Is this the standard way of things? I like my (independant) garage and have used tham for some years, I suppose I expected if they supply and fit a part and part is faulty under warranty then replacement would be free too. The current arrangement seems to pass responsibility for a faulty part to the manufacturer even though they source the parts and bill me for them (I've always assumed with something on top of the cost price).... If you paid the independent then it is their responsibilty.Warranty on parts fitted is normally 12 months. It is upto them, not you, to take it up with their supplier.
