It emerges that there is a known software problem with the Hyundai i30 tuner. The ad hoc traffic announcements disappeared from mine and I had a new one fitted under warranty this morning. It works, but the wavebands have been changed to FM1, FM2, FMA, AM and AMA i.e. there is no longwave now. Read more

Today I had my i30 radio changed, again!, and it might be too early to say but i'm optimistic that it will now work ok and that I can leave the ta turned on and still get good reception.

Another problem cropped up with the wheel pressure sensors. I thought I had a slow puncture but it turned out to be the sensor valve leaking. The Hyundai garage tried to blame me for this saying I had disturbed the rubber washer on the seal !!! After a long discussion they have agreed to change the seals at their cost ( I had discovered a second wheel leaking air through the rubber seal on the sensor). Be warned, when they leak air, it leaks very quickly and could be dangerous. If you have recently had any tyres changed and the garage have disturbed this rubber washer then you may have problems. Hyundai have only recently warned their dealerships about this but it has not been passed on to the customer.

General question - I had a clutch master cylinder replaced a few months ago due to the clutch pedal getting stuck down on my Golf. This cured the fault until a week ago when now it is back. Car into garage and they feel needs a new cylinder again and said yes that the part is covered by warranty. Gave me 2 options - take car to VW (part was apparently from them initially) let them take it apart and if found to be faulty the work will be free or (ii) they will do it, I'd pay in full for work to be done and the new part but then garage will send part back under warranty and reimburse me (but labour would remain payable).

Is this the standard way of things? I like my (independant) garage and have used tham for some years, I suppose I expected if they supply and fit a part and part is faulty under warranty then replacement would be free too. The current arrangement seems to pass responsibility for a faulty part to the manufacturer even though they source the parts and bill me for them (I've always assumed with something on top of the cost price).... If you paid the independent then it is their responsibilty.Warranty on parts fitted is normally 12 months. It is upto them, not you, to take it up with their supplier.

I have a 2003 2.2di sport, when i drive it underload when towing or solo between 2k to 2.5k rpm the car makes a noticeable rattling very much like a 'pinking' noise. It only does it between these revs when accelarating once it reaches 3000rpm it goes away, it doesn't seem to lose power or smoke anymore than normal.

I am a bit worried it may be the timing chain, could this cause the above problem.... Read more

Capacitors? I wonder.. Are there any electronics within this light unit? I read of LED driver ICs to control the current and hence the intensity of the light. Never had one apart meself, but I can understand that a good quality unit may have such controls, so perhaps talk of a capacitor holding charge and leaking it to cause a dim glow may be valid! And as for the 50Hz idea? Well, many LED lights are run with pulsed current, often at 50Hz. Ever passed through a road junction at night and had the illusion that the little red or green men on the pedestrian lights formed a line of little glowing men as you blink and turn your head? That's because they aren't continuously lit, but pulsed, so a LED stop light with electronic driver would employ the same technique, methinks. Anyway, to find the problem....

Disconnect the feed wire from the dimly gowing LED cluster. Does this clear the problem?...

Hi

My recently acquired S reg Fiesta 1.25 has an annoying rattle behind the dash on the near/passenger side. I thought it was the hard plastics around the bulk head under the bonnet causing it which I cushioned with some foam but it isn't?? It starts at around 30 mphs and sounds like something is very loose in and behind the glove box area. I can't for the life of me suss it out short of taking the dash itself out? ..:(... Read more

Thanks Ian and Paul

I've had this problem for years, and always assumed it was a loose piece of plastic somewhere in the ventilation system. It never would have occurred to me that it was the heat shield - but I'm delighted to have come across this thread, and it's fixed now.

Thanks again
