I am wondering what is involved to reset the engine management light / clear any fault codes. The EML light is permanently on.

Do I need to buy any special kit to be able to do this? I know modern cars connect to a laptop (which I have) but is there a special connector and software required? I am technical but not in the garage trade.... Read more

You definitely need to take a picture but you also need to leave a note with your contact details. If not it is failure to stop. If you cannot leave a note for any reason you have to report the incident to the police within 24 hours.

I am having difficulty in picking through manufacturers quoted mpg/green bandings to actual real world driving.

My commute and job mean that I do not drive in towns, but travel on cruise at about 80Mph on the Speedo (75Mph on sat nav) and I am trying to work out what family car (2 kids) gives the best Mpg and overall running costs.... Read more

For high miler high speed motorway drivers it's worth looking at a car's drag (Cd) figure. If fuel economy is important, don't consider one above 0.3. (e.g. Aston Martins - they may look sleek, but they're not.) The best are modest sized electric cars, e.g. Hyundai Ionique or Toyota Prius, around the .25 mark. Some large cars are surprisingly good - e.g. Audi. Forty years ago their 100 was 0.3 - the A8 is even sleeker.

To add to the list of gripes with the Focus I've bought, I don't like the sound quality of the stereo one bit.

I've replaced the head unit with a decent Sony unit, without much of an improvement. The sound really is dire -- to someone who appreciates good separates, this thing sounds like a 1980s Amstrad effort.... Read more

My 2002 Mondeo speakers were fine, even when I replaced the head unit with a good Pioneer unit the sound was great, the speakers did not need upgrading. Likewise my 2007 Focus ST sound system is great, better than our BMW 1 Series for that matter....

I have one of these that has intermittant poor starting. It will fire then stop when the key is released. On the second go it will fire then run rough for a few seconds. For the rest of the day the car will be fine. At other times it is o.k.. The car has been back to the dealers for many weeks and has loads of work done. Without going into too much detail about what has been done, has anybody had similar problems? If so, what sorted it please? Regards, Read more

For those who are interested, I know that it has been some time but the following happened about a year ago. The low coolant light kept coming on and I had to top up coolant. Went to a different garage and a leaking water pump was diagnosed. The current one (with timing belt and ancilliary belt and idlers) hadn't been on 2 years but outside of warranty. This garage replaced the pump and put a new belt on. I drove home a totally different car again. It was much smoother and probably the engine it should have been all along. I spoke to the technician who carried out the work and he told me that the timing had been out. So to recap, wrong timing from the dealer after a head change and then wrong from a specialist. This isn't good. The car is beautiful drive but guess what? Intermittent poor starting when cold and the odd misfire when driving. What is going on with this car?

Hi guys

I've got an N reg Seat Ibiza Salsa (1994/5 I think) and it's recently developed a weird issue. Sometimes when I come to the car and turn it on, the motor doesn't engage. No turning over, no clicking, just nothing! All the lights and car electronics work, but when I turn the igniton on, absolutely nothing happens. Sometimes this is fixed by just turning it off and trying again, sometimes it takes several attempts. This evening it got very irritating in that it took 25 minutes for me to get it started (I was in Cambridge at the time, and needed to get back to Birmingham!). This issue appears to be exacerbated by a warm car (why I don't know, but if it's been left in the sun for any time is much more likely to have trouble starting). Once it's started it runs fine, and normally if I subsequently stop it (say to fill up with petrol) it will start fine first attempt. But if I leave it any length of time, the issue can start up again.... Read more

Hi,

I have a vw polo, 1.4, auto, w reg, 60k. Since I've owed it, I've been using 10w40 semi synthetic oil (as recommended), its now time to change the oil again and I've been looking at various oil manufactures websites for recommendations, I'm getting a vast array of recommended grades of oil, from 5w30 fully synthetic, 15w40 to 15w50 and of course 10w40 semi synthetic..... and now I'm confused which ones really are accurate.

The car is now 10 years old and because of that, and probably poor maintenance prior to me owning it, the engine can be noisy on start up in cold or hot weather (until it is well warmed up), despite using engine cleaners etc at oil change. I thought I'd try a suitable oil of a different varosity, but have no idea which one is compatible, any suggestions/ advice to reduce engine wear and noisy, prices, sellers etc?

Many thanks,

Kvfilms

And don't use cleaners thats why its noisy at start up they do more damage than they cure.

I've got a 59 plate ford focus 1.6 tdci which i got in march. Ever since I got it a couple of times a week my cooling fan runs on for 20-30mins after the ignition has been turned off. My car has been in for repair 7 times and the fault keeps happening. The dealership say no fault can be found although they have replaced the cooling fan, cooling fan module, temperature sensor and cooling fan relay. Unfortunately it still happens. They say it's a fault however can't find it. Its due to go back in for a new ECU. I have asked for a replacement vehicle as I feel this fault has gone on long enough. This was rejected by the dealer. After speaking to the finance company involved with my car they advised me to reject the car. This was also knocked back by the dealership. I do alot of miles a week and feel that the fault could be serious.

I'm not very technical with cars, I was just hoping I could get some advice what I could do next thanks Read more

There is still a common temp swicth mounted in the head to trigger the ECU which in turn triggers the fans it cannot work any otherway,it has to get its temp reading from somewhere and then switch the fans its irelevent whether it uses can bus or old fashioned wire to wire.I hope fitting the new ECU cures the problem if not do as Robert suggests and stop paying for it.
