My sister bought a 52 plate Rover 45 2.0 turbodiesel with a more or less full history and a cam belt change. As this isn't the K series, the head gasket doesn't go on them and it will return over 50 mpg with ease. Also add in the quality of the interior fittings and the nice drive and this is a decent car for £ 2000. The parts are still easy to get and it does make a more interesting alternative to the Ford and Vauxhall rivals.

The very most likely cause of your hot hard starting is either the crankshaft sensor which when warm can/does go open circuit which when cools again vehicle re-starts. Another very common fault is the starter motor vehicle starts easily when cold but when warm draws to much current robbing the injectors of current hense no hot start

I'm considering a VW Golf Mk5. My daily commute is around 18 miles, and longer journeys through work and at the weekend would be fairly rare.

The appeal of the diesel is purely a matter of torque. SWMBO has a 2002 Mazda 323F 1.6 GSi, and that's frankly horrible to drive if you want to climb a hill or overtake anything.... Read more

I think "image issue" is only in the eye of the beholder. What is desirable to some people is to be avoided by others (see BMW).

Some people don't buy BMW's for image. You'll find people like me who own the older ones have found they are extremely durable and cheap to run due to availability of parts and are relatively easy to work on compared to most modern front wheel drive set ups.

Hi all.

Obviously after a bit of help and advise. My mate 2 doors up has a non turbo 2001 version of the Expert van. Recently the electronic speedo has stopped working. I have managed to find wiring diagrams at " http://peugeot.mainspot.net/wiring806/index.shtml " which although not identical have given enough info for me to check out the wiring asa i had already checked the fuse and that isokay. ... Hi

I bought a 07 plate 1.9 diesel Octavia last month and a mighty fine car too. Trouble is I can't get my head round a two year service interval ( I always did a six month intermediate oil change on my last car) and since we only cover 10K a year, so might be better changing to fixed annual service. Last service was April 09, next one due April 11 - we have a long trip to S of France this August.... Read more

Back at the start of July, I decided the house would look much nicer with a nice shiney new car parked outside. So off to the main dealers I went, knowing exactly what make/model/engine/coulor/options I wanted.

Turneds out a factory build would have take quite a while, so the dealer managed to find a car in the 'computer' of the right model/engine/colour. It was in Scotland. I was happy to do without the options in lieu of a quick delivery date and a discount, so paid a deposit with delivery agreed for mid-July.... Read more

Advice required please:

My mother in law recently dropped myself & 2 8 yo kids outside Hounslow East train station, on a bus stop: You know the score, following the bus, bus pulls away, belts off in anticipation, we drive in, hop out , driver pulls away 10 seconds max, no one inconvenienced, everyone happy.............Except........... she has just received a parking fine with photo for parking on a bus stop. She has paid the fine as she has just appealed against another ticket (and won) because the ticketing officer didn't see the ticket stuck to her windscreen. The parking dept have told her that they looked favourably on her the last time 'but it wont happen again'. This has left her with a big brother will always win attitude, hence paying the fine immediately, but I think this smacks of easy money for the council & we must have some recourse on this.... I have seen vehicles before,in That London, where people were able to jump on and off a low platform/doorway at the nearside rear when the vehicle was moving slowly in traffic.

Buses, I think they were called. They also had designated areas to stop in, for those too timid to jump.

I've got a 59 plate ford focus 1.6 tdci which i got in march. Ever since I got it a couple of times a week my cooling fan runs on for 20-30mins after the ignition has been turned off. My car has been in for repair 7 times and the fault keeps happening. The dealership say no fault can be found although they have replaced the cooling fan, cooling fan module, temperature sensor and cooling fan relay. Unfortunately it still happens. They say it's a fault however can't find it. Its due to go back in for a new ECU. I have asked for a replacement vehicle as I feel this fault has gone on long enough. This was rejected by the dealer. After speaking to the finance company involved with my car they advised me to reject the car. This was also knocked back by the dealership. I do alot of miles a week and feel that the fault could be serious.

I'm not very technical with cars, I was just hoping I could get some advice what I could do next thanks Read more

There is still a common temp swicth mounted in the head to trigger the ECU which in turn triggers the fans it cannot work any otherway,it has to get its temp reading from somewhere and then switch the fans its irelevent whether it uses can bus or old fashioned wire to wire.I hope fitting the new ECU cures the problem if not do as Robert suggests and stop paying for it.
