Ford Focus 2005 TDCI 1.6L - Lack of Turbo boost - ficosaneil

Hi All,

On Friday when I jumped into my Focus I noticed that the Turbo was non existant, everything else was fine it was just running like a non Turbo car. Its covered 76k miles.

I must add that in the last few weeks I've had a slight oil leak. Also I changed the oil 2 weeks ago and used some oil that my brother got from his garage (probably cheap 'trade' type oil).

I've taken the pipe off the turbo that connects to the airbox/filter and there isn't any exessive play that I can tell in the turbo. When I did my service a couple of weeks ago the air filter was very oilly which I guess is not a good thing.

Ford have a list as long as your arm to replace if the turbo fails, I'm hoping I can get away with just changing the turbo and the oil feed pipe as I understand the oil feed pipe was modded~2007 to recifiy a know issue with it causing turbo failure. I'll also drain the oil and replace with some good quality fully synthetic oil,

After looking around this and other sites I'm wondering how best to rectify the problem.

Anyone think I'm doing the right thing? Anyone had this issue and resolved another way?

Any help appreciated.

Cheers!

Usual situation with these is the turbo shaft shears so that the air input impellor spins but you will probably find the exhaust impellor has seized. As a minimum ,you will need a turbo and oil feed pipe and certainly an oil and filter change.Interestingly,i found the cheapest turbo to be a Ford exchange unit, but was still pushing£500 +hth

Cheers mate, I think thats what I'm going to do, turbo, oil feed pipe plus (good) oil and filter change.

So do you expect that if I take the pipe off the opposite side of the turbo I should see it siezed shut? I think I'll take a look tonight.

There's a couple of sellers on eBay doing reconditioned turbos with 12 months warranty's for around £300. All they ask is that you replace the oil feed pipe (and return your faulty turbo to them within 2 weeks).

Well its been a weeks since I got my car back and no problems *touches wood*

I changed the turbo, oil feed pipe, oil and filter (used Ford's special fully synthetic oil). I did 80 miles last Friday and then changed the oil and filter again. I've now clocked up about 400 miles and all is well.

TBH I haven't checked the removed part, I should have done really. I assume it must have done as I only replaced the turbo and the oil pipe so the fault must have existed in there.

I think it must have been starved of oil as before the fault there was loads of oil in and around the air filter so I changed it. When I checked the new filter after getting the issue (2 weeks on) it was clean as a whistle. Then when I had a look at it again after the repair had been done (1 day) and I'd clocked up some miles it was a little bit oilly again.

By seeing the oil again I'm assuming there's plenty around the turbo and its well lubricated.

Found this very useful. Having just purchased (29/12/10) Ford Focus 2005 TDCi 1.6 LX it has been and still is in the garage unable to use. I drove it carefully for the first few days until I got to know the vehicle (normally drive Nissan X Trail) and after a few days decided I would try it out on a dual carriageway to open her up a little. Needless to say, she lost power. It felt like a slight tug as I was moving up the gearbox but then the loss of power slowed me down. I am frustrated because when I turn off the ignition, it seems to re-set itself and is okay for awhile before doing it again. When the garage have taken it out to test drive it they said they couldn't get it to do it so I took them and showed them. They have since said it was a broken clip on an air pipe, still happened, then they said it was the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) unit which has a filter attached and this needed cleaning out, still happened, then they decided to change the EGR and filter, still happened, yesterday they advised me it was their theory that it was the turbo. They sent it away to a specialist who has said today that the turbo is ok and to check all the pipe work. The vehicle has been with the garage for 6 days overall since the 29th December. Should I tell the dealer I want my money back? Who is to say they will find the fault before the warranty expires and then where does that leave me? Please help, I am so frustrated.
