Showing the forum messages to garage had magical effect.Sender contacts were examined, diagnostic m/c coupled and cooling fan DID kick in at 102/103C. Saved unnecessary job,so inlet manifold O rings next!!

A salutary tale. Not all doom and gloom though, as some harbingers may have liked to have seen, although I take it you got stuck with the VAT increase.

My dad thinks that one of the bearings has gone on my car, as it makes a loud roaring noise 70% of the time when the steering wheel is turned to the right. Does anyone know how much this cost to fix? (I'm a 23 yr old female so don't want to be messed around when I go to the garage!) Also, is it dangerous to continue driving around with it like this? And does anyone else have any other ideas as to what might be wrong?!

Thanks. Read more

Needs careful diagnosis which side is at fault, sometimes once you take the weight off and spin the wheel the rumbling or other sound disappears.

A friend had his Pug diagnosed as one side gone which seemed the obvious one, though in fact it turned out to the opposite side's inside bearing which threw most of us.

The panoramic sunroof refused to close electronically - I tried to close manually (following the instructions in hand book) but failed - the rear section twisted during the manual process.

I took the car to a BMW specialist and they managed to close the roof. They advised that the solution was to replace the sunroof frame at a cost of GBP 1,750.00.... Read more

Faults with the sunroof mechanism on these seem to be emerging as a common failure area.I have seen 3 in the last 6 months, and very few X5s are fitted with them. There are no individual parts available to repair these ,so a complete frame/mechanism is reqd.Best option is to disconnect it and forget about it.hth

I drove 2 litre petrol Nissan 'sedan' in Canada a couple of years ago with cvt gearbox. Two weeks and more than 2000 miles gave me 49mpg..(Canadian gallon is Imperial gallon, not US gallon). rather more than your figure. Perhaps down to type of traffic but still a lot of difference. I was well impressed. When you're cruising at a constant speed - any speed, 30mph or 70mph, the engine speed is barely above tickover. Brilliant.

Hi i have a '99 almera, the ABS light is on constantly, i took it to the garage today but they couldn't find the fault because the ECU doesn't have an LED to show the fault code. Any advice would be appreciated. Read more

Can't off-hand say for sure what the N15 Almera pins would be on the diagnostic port to put a paperclip across but we used the same technique to test for fault codes on our N14 Pulsar GTi-R.. it's a lot quicker then checking each sensor individually too and it is noted in the Haynes manual so check it out.. it's worth keeping for when you need it :)

If the ABS unit proves to be faulty, it will be a very simple fix and we've got a few N15 Almera units on the shelf too.. I could probably let one go for cheap if you need it.. if you do, give us a call on 0871 2887 666. Most likely a sensor though, they hardly ever go the ABS pumps, we've got a few on the shelf they never get requested lol.

My Astra 1.3 cdti (Fiat engine) has started making a strange vibration / humming noise when I switch the engine off once thoroughly warm. The noise persists for 10 seconds or so after the engine has stopped, and it comes from a small component situated under the offside front chassis leg, just forward of the front subframe mounting, more or less under the headlamp, but back a little. The component is mounted on rubber bobbins, and has a wiring loom plug attached. Have any of you guys any idea what it is and what it does, and is it potentially serious? I'd be very grateful. I have an intermittent start problem on this car in the respect that if I have started first time, gone about my business, turn off and lock up then go back to the car in an hour it doesn't start and I have to wait a few hours for it to 'reset' then attempt to restart which most times it does. Ive noticed this also when I go back into it to retrieve something without starting then it won't start a short while after that.

I started thinking immobiliser but all the dash signs (i.e. the red flashing light) indicates this is working correctly as advised by a guy on 'Just Answer' website. The remote key has been checked by Ford and so has the system and its had a PCM reset to no avail. It locks and unlocks fine and will give the same problem with the standard (non remote) key. Ford didnt come across the non start problem but presumably they did all the checks inside half an hour so it didnt show up. I even thought is it a mobile phone interferring with the cars system!... In March 2009, I purchased a Jaguar Approved Used Car from Guy Salmon, Jaguar main dealer in Northampton.
The car, a 4.2 S Type R, first registered in March 2004, had done 17,000 miles at purchase and has now covered just 29,000 miles. The car has been fully serviced by Jaguar main dealers throughout its life and was last serviced 2000 miles ago.
The car is currently sitting in Lancaster, Sidcup, Jaguar main dealers, having suddenly started making an extremely loud knocking noise from the engine. The dealer diagnosed a crankshaft bearing failure and thus the need for a new engine as repair would be uneconomical.
With a car having covered just 29,000 miles and just 3 months out of warranty, I do not exepct to have to pay for a new engine. Jaguar customer services and Guy Salmon from whom the car was purchased refuse to accept any responsibility though Jaguar have offered a goodwill gesture due to the low milage of 50% of the cost of the engine, leaving me to pay all labour and ancillaries and the remaining 50% - a bill of £4995.
Having purchased an approved used car with full Jaguar service history, I find it totally unacceptable to have to replace the engine at my expense at such a low mileage and so soon after end of warranty.
My expectation is that Jaguar accept moral responsibility and replace the engine fully at their cost.
Any advice would be appreciated as to how to proceed further.

Agree with Bonzo Dog. You need to negotiate but you won't get a fully paid up repair on a vehicle of this age form either the dealer or Jaguar.
