A few months ago I posted a question here about the best family estate car for £18,000. With our 101,000 mile 307 needing a £1000 service, we are thinking seriously again about changing car and finally getting enough space for our young daughter and all the associated paraphernalia. As we now need a bigger house, we've unfortunately had to reduce our budget to £13,000. We drove a few options yesterday, and think a 3 year old S-Max 2.0 TDCi may be perfect. It rode and handled like a big Golf GTI, and while not quite a replacement for my much missed MX-5, it was more fun than the 308 SW and (out of budget) 5008 we tried.... Read more

Hi
I drive a mk2 Ford Focus 1.6 Tdci Zetec with 17 inch alloys 205/50 tyres. I went into a pothole not long ago and since then the car (in particular the steering wheel and dashboard) shakes at over 60mph. I had wheel balancing and trackings done 4 times already (yes 4 times) since then and I think I've wasted enough money on them. Apparently there is a flat spot on one of the alloy and to be honest I find the ride a bit harsh on these wheels. I am not sure what else can I do to solve this problem?... Read more
I'm sure that if you post on one of the focus forums you'll find someone willing to do a straight swap.
Or you could pick up a set of 15" or 16" wheels on ebay or from a breaker and keep your 17" ones for when you're ready to sell.
Bought my xtrail at christmas. 2007 dci, 28,000 mls.
Very load nocking noise from engine when cold. Ok after 10-15 mins. Have been told by Nissan garage, no problem with car, this is normal! Has anyone else had or have this with their xtail.... Read more
purchased from them for £3
Can you believe my timing belt snapped just 1000 miles over it's 40,000 mile warranty!!!! I was at low revs 2000 when it went and I dipped clutch within a second of losing power.
The break is clean as if it's been done with a stanley blade!!! The rest of the belt is like new!!! Could a piece of sharpe metal/glass have got in between the belt and cogs??... Read more
No actually, I mean warranty. The 40,000 mile waranty the garage gave me when I had it changed 41,000 miles ago.
It's 16v and I'm hoping not all 16 are bent :( It's going in this week. I got tax insurance and MOT within the next 5 weeks so I'm praying it ain't too much....
I have a Nissan Note on Motorbility. We find the handling on a duel carriageway awfull. It wonders all over the place. I have contacted Nissan who cannot find a fault (typical)
Has anyone else had this kind of trouble with this car or is it just mine? Read more
Find our pool car Note drives and handles brilliantly.
Averages a little over 50mpg which is not bad for a 1.4 petrol that normally has at least 3 occupants on board....
Once again I'm thinking about changing my car.
I've spotted a manual C-Max 2.0 petrol with just under 50k on the clock which I rather like, but from what I've read on HJ's car-by-car breakdown, these engines are fitted with a DMF.... Read more
So I guess that the clutch should be pushed out both when starting and stopping an engine with a DMF.
Hi,
I have been thinking of buying an old BMW 3 series diesel but I have been getting put off the idea because I have been reading about Dual Mass Flywheel failures in diesels. Does anyone know do 3 series diesel suffer from this? Does any manufacturer of diesels not suffer from this? I understand that automatics do not have them but I would prefer a manual gearbox.... DP, that sounds as if your B-I-L has had more problems than all of your own high-milege cars put together.
My personal view is that BMW, like most other manufacturers, are suffering from the need to install components and technology onto cars that is at best delicate, and at worst, completely unfit for purpose. A major mechanical failure on a BMW at this mileage would have been taken extremely seriously by the dealer, and by BMW GB and AG a few years ago.
I recall about 10 years ago, an acquaintance had an engine (conrod) failure on an E36 M3 at 27,000 miles. The engine was replaced FOC without question, BMW AG became involved, and sent a technician over the next day to examine the old engine. A new engine was delivered at the same time, and fitted to the car to get him back on the road. BMW GB paid for the next service as an apology. The German engineer compiled a report, and had the old unit sent back to Germany where it went into a lab and had a full stripdown, metallurgical analysis and so on. The problem was found to be a couple of conrods which were below standard (another was about to go as well). He had a letter from some senior engineering bod at BMW AG apologising for the problem, and assuring him it wouldn't happen again....
I understand that the Mazda 6 and Ford Mondeo are built on the same platform? If this is correct I'm assuming the Mazda 2.0 MZR-CD RF diesel engine is the same PSA designed unit as the Ford 2.0 Duratorq TDCi diesel engine (As Ford seem to be a majority owner of Mazda) - is my assumption correct, are they totally different or are there subtle differences between the two?
The answer(s) may spawn several more questions.... Read more
Just a quick message,
if anyone has ever had problems with Mazda customer service, arguments regarding faults/defects etc. Then please email me on contact@mazda-campaign.co.uk (the site is currently under construction but will be up with full comment, forum capabilities in due course)...
Hello
I've just joined the ESP light on club. Found this site via another volkswagen forum. There sem to be a hell of a lot of people with this problem. My car is a 56 plate golf 1.6 FSI with only 6000 miles on the clock. Took it to VW who did diagnostic check (gratis) and confirmed the ABS pump switch fault. Cost around £1100 including labour to fix. Just for info I had a look at mine and the code is 1KO 614 517 which according to this site is one of the dodgy ones. the dealer is going to contact VW to see if there is any 'goodwill' on their part as clearly there should be. I cannot believe that there hasn't been a recall on this as I would have thought it was safety issue even though you can switch it off. Anyway my first service was outside of VW which doesn't help but second service was and also set up a service contract at same time so that might help. I will keep you posted! Read more
If I recall earlier discussions, VOSA rejected VW ESP failure as a recall item as it was not safety related.
I was wondering if it might be time to have another go at them in the light of the fact that the EU have mandated the fitting of ESP on safety grounds?...

The verso is one of those cars where the diesel is worth having even if you don't do a jihj mileage - simnply because Toyota don't offer a petrol engine powerful enough to make it decent to drive. The Verso is a lot less wallowy than its French rivals.
For £13,000, the OP can find a good newish one, although the 5-year warranty is a recent offer for new cars....
