Vauxhall astra 1.6 sxi 2002 - Timing belt snapped 1000 miles over it's 40,000!!! - Hot Fuse

Can you believe my timing belt snapped just 1000 miles over it's 40,000 mile warranty!!!! I was at low revs 2000 when it went and I dipped clutch within a second of losing power.

The break is clean as if it's been done with a stanley blade!!! The rest of the belt is like new!!! Could a piece of sharpe metal/glass have got in between the belt and cogs??

I'm getting all sorts of quotes from "if you are lucky there will be no damage" upto "you'll have bent pistons" etc.

What is the best and worst case senario and is the guy telling me about bent pistons, as I imagine, full of s***.

Best and worst cases really are as you describe, somewhere in between getting away with it, and having both pistons and valves damaged.

Most likely case is a few bent valves, but until the engine comes apart, you won't know. If that's the case, a good secondhand cylinder head, fitted "as is" will be the cheapest and quickest repair.

Thanks for that. One garage just told me between £350 and £470 depending on how many valves have bent. 350 if two valves are bent up to 470 if all are bent.

How much would I be looking to pick up a second hand head up for? I'm assuming i'll be saving labour cost this way?

Sorry to bump but can anyone tell me roughly how much a secondhand head is? Where would I get one? How will I know if it's any good?

Please help I'm super skint, tax up end of this month insurance also due middle of next. I lost my job last year (thanks banks) and don't want to get ripped off. You can put your violins down now ; )

I think you mean recommended change interval, not warranty.

For yr 2002 Astras (excluding Z16SE engines) -

16 valve engines are every 40,000 miles OR 4 years (whichever comes sooner)

8 valve engines (Z1.6SE) are every 80,000 miles OR 8 years (whichever comes sooner)

Vauxhall also recommends cambelt replacement interval of 4 yrs / 40,000 miles as best practice on all 16v petrol engines manufactured between 1997 & 2002.

Is your engine an 8v or 16v?

If a 16v, has the belt ever been changed before?

If it's an 8v, then you may well be lucky in that these engines are generally classed as non interferance - ie, the pistons won't have kissed the valves unless the engine was at full chat at the time.

No actually, I mean warranty. The 40,000 mile waranty the garage gave me when I had it changed 41,000 miles ago.

It's 16v and I'm hoping not all 16 are bent :( It's going in this week. I got tax insurance and MOT within the next 5 weeks so I'm praying it ain't too much.

Come to think of it my emisions light is on and a get the blinking fault cade of 400...something to do with egr valve I believe.....will it fail emisions test at MOT?
