I have been getting the car/spanner warning light when starting from cold. It stays lit for up to half a mile and then goes out. The car has also been taking longer to start. I've managed to get hold of an Op-Com diagnostics kit and the following is recorded :
Total number of fault codes: 1
P0380 - Glow Plug Circuit
(0B) - Not present... Read more

Has anyone got any experience (good or bad) of buying a car from cargiant? I'm going there tomorrow. I've looked at their website and there are couple of cars which fit my budget and the sort of car I'm looking for.

Avant - Thanks.
Glad you asked about PX. It was quite funny actually. I had told salesman I would like to PX my Mazda323. He wrote down on a piece of paper that I would like around £1200 (I had told him I'll be happy with around £800-£900) for it. Then he told me to wait and few minutes later their valuations guy asked me to show him my car. Which I did and he didn't even take one minute looking at the car. Then he offered me £200 and I just started laughing and told him to forget it....

Because I have never heard a DMF have a loud whining noise. I suggest going to a BMW garage and asking there workshop forman to have a listen to the noise. Regards Peter
If so what is available and how the heck can one search for models available?

My views from here in Italy.
In Italy lpg stations are much more common....
According to my mechanic my flywheel is starting to give bother, it is intermittently rattling, and apparently will eventually "go", it needs replaced.
I generally tend to think that if you are in and around the gearbox / flywheel that it is wise to fit a clutch, as I have often heard of a clutch failing soon after new parts have been fitted around it.... Read more
It has a DMF. At 69K I would say is a bit early. DMF's are pretty tough but the PD engines give them a hard time when the driver takes advantage of the torque. Fitting a solid one will increase vibration, noise in the cabin at low steeds and eventually shake the exhaust flexi joint apart. The only advantage is that it is cheaper and yes fit a new clutch. If you have been giving the clutch/DMF a hard time then you may require a new flywheel. Regards Peter
I have a question about the DMF on my wife's Saab 93 convertible TiD150. It went in for its annual service and first MOT the other day. No problems really but the dealer said when I went to collect it there was some vibration in the DMF on start up and they'd like to replace it under warranty. Personally, I think this is quality service as I'd never even noticed anything wrong with the car.
Anyway, I was just curious to know what would have happened if the DMF had "gone" in the next year and, more to the point, how expensive it would have been to fix? Read more
If it needs a new compressor, it's probably not been working for quite a while. Moisture will have got in and contaminated the internals of the compressor.
If the system is turned on once a week for 10 minutes, it wil circulate the refridgerant which also contains a lubricant and keeps the seals moist. If you'd used it, you would have noticed it wasn't working and only received a bill for a new condensor, which should be a whole lot cheaper than a compressor. If you look at some Saab specialists, they may be able to send you a good used compressor for less money, then get a specialist to fit it....
5 weeks ago I bought a Volkswagen Golf IV 2.0 GTI, first registered in 2002, from a used car dealer. The car has 74k miles on the clock, 1 previous owner, and a full service history.
Two days after I bought it a yellow light came on on the dashboard. I understand this to be the emission filter light. I returned it to the garage who explained the filters need cleaning. They did this, the light went off, and off I went.... Read more

Hi, I'm looking at the below ad, and wondering if anyone would be able to advise whether to worry about the high mileage?
Has the turbo/supercharger been known to fail?
Any high cost repairs that could hit as the miles rack up?
Thanks

I would buy something with a well proven engine for now, and watch those 1.4TSI engines while they rack up big mileages, to see if any problems develop. The engine may have strong internals and remain reliable, but ancillaries such as turbo's, superchargers normally only have a finite life. Remember the VW G-lader supercharged engines in the Corrado? Good torque and power, but nasty rebuild costs when the supercharger went wrong.
The latest superchargers might be better, but I wouldn't want to have to replace this at high mileage, then be stuck with a bill for a new turbo as well. Best to see how this one develops. Or buy one with a cast iron warranty.
When I did this job on our old Scenic 1.9dCi, another glowplug installation known for snapping the plugs on removal, I was advised to do it with the engine warm. I did, and had no problems. It is proper heart in mouth stuff applying the initial torque to crack them loose, but take your time, and you shouldn't have any problems.
Good luck!...
