I have a 2003 2.2di sport, when i drive it underload when towing or solo between 2k to 2.5k rpm the car makes a noticeable rattling very much like a 'pinking' noise. It only does it between these revs when accelarating once it reaches 3000rpm it goes away, it doesn't seem to lose power or smoke anymore than normal.

I am a bit worried it may be the timing chain,could this cause the above problem.

We have a trip to France planned and i am getting a bit concerned.

Don't really want to take it into my local Nissan dealer due to compleatly losing faith in them when i bought the car.

Sounds like an injection problem, possibly a faulty injector, I would take it along to a diesel specialist, they usually know what they are doing and are cheaper than the dealer.

Could a faulty injector cause pinking, is it worth trying a fuel additive like redex?

Timing chain tensioner was a problem on the early xtrail

Hi,

I've had the same pinking type rattle on my last 3 diesels, Freelander 02, CRV 06 and current CRV 58. Just like a petrol engine if you ease off the accelerator the rattle stops or you can accelerate through it. When my 06 CRV was recalled for EGR replacement, garage just said rattle was a characteristic ! It does not seem to have caused any problems, just live with it.

Mine makes the same noise - I would describe it as the engine note getting harsher at about 2200.

I've had the vehicle since new (2003) so I know the timing chain tensioner was replaced.

I think it's an injector. It's been doing it for the last 15000 km, with no apparent effects on consumption or power.

Since I'm changing it in September at the latest, I had decided to leave it.

Thanks for the replies will just put up with it for the time being a see how it goes, and will try some injector cleaner
