VW Touran 1.9 TDI - Replacement Turbo & Cat - SHM

The Turbo on my 2005 1.9 Diesel Touran blew on Saturday in a cloud of smoke. My car has done just over 70k miles. Dealer wants £2200 to replace both the Turbo and the Cat. An independent (Bosch Service Network) garage has quoted less than £1300 for the same work using a new (not refurb)Turbo Technics Turbo.

Is this worth the £900 saving or should play safe and get the dealer to do it?

In this case I can see no advantage paying the extra and using a VW dealer, as long as the garage is reputable.

If you shop around you will probably get it done for even less.

My sons Passat with 1.9PD did the same, although at 149k miles.

A new VNT turbo was £550 & refurb £325.

He went for a refurb turbo which went on for the next 20k miles he owned it with no problem.

We didn't bother to change the cat which does little on a diesel.

Passed the MOT smoke test with no problem.
