Just a general poll.

What are the feelings of the backroom regards servicing in these financially challenging times ?
Would you be tempted to skip a service, switch to an indie or get the overalls out and make a trip to the dealership for the bits and fit them yourself. Or, would you go the whole hog and nip down the local autospares and see what they had to offer in parts for your pride and joy ?

What about the knock effect when you come to sell ? Obviously a 911 turbo serviced at home with joe bloggs oil and filter is going to be a bit different to a 1.0 Corsa serviced with the same oil and filter Read more

Thanks everyone for replying.

The conclusion I can draw is that in the Daily Telegraph land of motoring nothing has changed regarding motoring costs.

Hello Guys,

Interesting forum.

My peugeot 406 1.8 16V Petrol's head gasket has blown up. And my mechanic says its going to cost me £350 with parts. I am not sure if he is charging me reasonable.

Can somebody tell me what all needs to be changed and fixed when the head gasket goes. I know the gasket has gone as my car overheated and just in few miles the temp gauge went upto the last point and STOP light came on. I immediately stopped the car but it was too late. After filling water in the radiator it didnt start and the sound of the car changed. Got it towed to this garage and he says it will take around 4 to 5 days. Is that true? BTW My car is a 1999 Model.

It will be great if someone can help me out here. Cheers. Read more

Thanks bbroomlea{P} and all others. Your information really helped me a lot. I have another problem now. My garage replaced the head gasket, timing belt and water pump because the water pump was the culprit and its all changed now. But now the car wont start. When you start the ignition and try to start the car the car still sounds the same and wont start at all. Is this something to do with Electricals or am i looking for some new investments. My garage says may be its the piston rings as it started once and was emitting smoke. So he says he will get the engine pressure checked and will let me know. But else the whole engine needs to be changed. Is this correct?

Nowadays its very hard to trust the mechanics. It will be great if you guys can please help me out here. ... Cheers.

Hi,

I've seen a car for sale that I like at Volkspeed car sales in Ashtead, Surrey.

Has anyone had any experiences of these good or bad? They are quite a long way away from me so before I make a 270 mile round trip I want to be sure they are a reputable company. I've googled them but nothing came up either way.

Thanks,

Pete.

I bought a 5 year old Saab here in 2002. It proved to be utterly reliable over the next 7 years to about 150,000 miles until I bought a new car for my wife (somewhere else) as a treat for my wife (which has cost more to maintain than the Saab ever did, every year)

I bought a 3 year old BMW 5 series from them in 2005. Again it has been utterly faultless over the 230,000 miles that I've added since. I know it cannot last forever and I always keep an eye on the Volkspeed site ready for the moment I need to buy a replacement.

They may not be the cheapest but I cannot fault the quality of their cars and at the end of the day it's better to spend a little more up front and a lot less.
I have a friend who has a similar experience after buying on my recommendation.

Hi all, I'm a long time reader but first time poster here!

I was just thinking today whether it's a good time to be buying a used car with the credit crunch going on and the likes?

I've been thinking about changing my car for a while now and am looking for a diesel estate that I can fit a couple of bikes in the boot of, I'm currently thinking of a Peugeot 307SW. I've noticed that there's some pretty good deals to be had on 2-3 year old models, even through main dealers.

So, is it a good time to buy or would I be better off waiting a few months to let everything settle down first?

After my Rover 414 blew head gasket (three days after passing MOT and having new catylytic convertor fitted ) I have decided to move on ......

Have been offered a Mondeo Ghia year 2000 2 litre - seems tidy, only MOT till Feb but Tax till next Sept - runs Ok, 78,000 on clock. He's asking £985.

Can anyone offer any advice, it's a private sale - it puts tax and insurance higher, is it going to be a gas guzzler?

Decided not to buy after viewing again....it may not be a lot of money but it's all I've got to spend so I had a few doubts and decided to walk away as a result. My male co viewer immediately noticed a poor overspray job on two passenger doors and that the underside of the car had also been sprayed, which the guy selling it claimed not to have noticed in the 2 years he owned it.... Just goes to show how you can't trust a brief first impression! Thanks for all the info though. The search continues!

Does anyone who knows the history of these things know if they ever came with grey bumpers rather than body coloured ones?

I'm looking at one (P reg) but it doesn't look how I expect, also there is a badge on the back which looks like "16v" (I'm going to see it later in the week).

Thanks,
Luke.

I've just rung up a number on autotrader for a 1.25 Ghia 5dr. The number was listed as private, asked about "the car" he said "which car?" I asked if he was a dealer, he said he was. He had a really thick accent and from what I could gather he deals from a total garage, hmmm. Car sounded really nice, fsh, good condition and only 1 owner, shame really.

Why is it so hard to find a decent car?

Having misplaced the Accord in floods last month - I'm looking at a buying a Honda CRV Executive privately to replace it .

I'm looking at one on Saturday, 2004 model , manual.

I obviously have the CBCB with me but just wondered if any CRV owners on here have any comments about any odd problems to look out for , particularly if not on the CBCB.

Generally - as its a Honda I would expect it to be pretty solid and reliable but also any comments on realistic mpg?

Unfortunately the Forester does not have the toys that I want. Looks nice though. Another problem is that I have no local Subaru dealer and I know and trust ( for servicing) my local Honda agent

The CRV I am looking at on Saturday is the pre 2005 facelift model so does not have the added bonus of cruise control which I had in the Accord.

Just looking at the market and after discussions with my mate who used to be a Sarf London dealer and does still do a bit of dabbling in the trade, I think I may hold fire on buying for another couple of months yet ...... or I may yet resurrect the Lazarus Accord - my local independent who bought it has shifted it inside and is fitting a secondhand engine at the moment.
