The blower in my 2002 clio now only works when put on level 4 - ie it doesn't work on 1,2 or 3 settings. Think it might be something to do with a connector plug. Anyone come across this before and have any advice as to how to fix? Thanks Read more

Usual cause on any car when it only works on the fastest blower speed is the resistor pack has failed.

anything with an engine

Hi,

I've recently bought an Escort 55 van as a cheap runabout. It's a 2000 model on a W plate, it is a 1.8 diesel (the non-turbo version). I want to give it a quick service but am struggling to find out the oil capacity. I could add a bit at a time I guess and keep checking the dipstick but if anyone knows how much it should take when oil and filter are changed it'd be much appreciated.

Cheers Read more

5.0 ltrs of 5W-40 should do nicely.

As the title says, the fans in my 2002 Ka are only blowing cold air. A bit of reading says it's 90% likely to be the heater control valve that's at fault. The question is, is it an easy part for a novice to replace? We have a ford dealer nearby where we can get the part and my partner has some experience messing with engines...but we have very little in the way of tools - just a couple of screwdriver sets, and a couple of wrenches and sockets.

Would I be better off taking the Ka and the part to my friendly local backstreet garage? Cheers :) Read more

did this work?? i also have a KA blowing out cold air, not good in this weather! my garage says it could be a bigger problem - radiator / head gasket (!). is this likely. they havn't looked at it yet but from what ive read it sounds like the heater control valve

Why do so many people get caught by speed cameras? After all, they're qute visible in their yellow colour and there are usually advance warnings.

When I got caught exceeding 60 it was by a police officer in a car hidden in a side road and he timed me (with a clock on the dash) between two roadside trees. I'm not making excuses for exceeding the limit, because I knew I was, but at least I didn't just miss seeing a big yellow box on a post because I wasn't paying attention. Read more

>>Saw a 58 plate silver VW Transporter "Safety Camera Van" the other morning with completely tinted front windows. Setting a good example, no?

The latest craze in Germany seems to be tinted glass that you can turn on or off with the flick of a switch. Every new building seems to have it.

Every so often someone describes a car as "boring", and I wonder what they mean.

I can understand a car being badly-designed, badly-engineered, unsafe, fast, underpowered, ugly, ...

and I understand "boring" when applied to music, books, films etc ...

and I'm prepared for this to be one of those "If you have to ask the price you can't afford it" sort of questions (I do, after all, have an Avensis, which people seem to think boring) ...

but how can a car be boring?

"but how can a car be boring?"

Only through personality attributes.

Do you see a simple object such as a Jubilee clip as boring? Or could you research it and write a 2,500 word assignment about it?

A car, any car.. ..............

Hi

I accidently drove over a bump recently with my 97 306 XSi . No initial damage to the under carriage was immediatly evident. Even after driving 70 miles home, the car seemed fine. The next morning however, after starting the car fine and driving for a mile the engine cut-out. I had it towed to a garage where the mechanic said that my sump was cracked and that the Peugeot 306 was designed to force the engine to cut out if oil loss occured so as to avoid further damage.

The mechanic replaced the sump; and here it gets interesting. The car failed to start. The mechanic first demanded payment for replacing the sump before investigating further. Has anyone ever had oil loss that resulted in an engine cut out without having had valve damage? If so, is there an engine mechanism or electric fault that just needs to be reset?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

So the oil light was on when you were driving?

The engine code is in the VIN number; look for RF - and then post the next letter.

The inertia switch is a square [red?] rubber button on the N/S strut behind the battery.

I am in a bit of a pickle, I was driving down the road , when I suddenly heard a bang and realised that the rear passenger in a minicab which had parked illegally had unwittingly flung the door open, and damaged my vehicle. I will have to replace my door and other trim, however when I contacted the drivers insurer I was told that driver is not liable for the damage and I should claim from the fare paying passenger who had opened the door without looking and who conveniently managed to disappear before the police arrived. The whole incident was caught on camera and there are a number of witnesses. My question is, is the insurer right in saying that the cab driver is without fault?, or am I being duped. I have contacted the legal assistance people on my insurance policy but am of the opinion that they won?t be very helpful. Read more

Claim off the cab owner / company - ignore their insurer.

The cab insurer might want to go after the passenger but that is their problem - not yours.

This has been over on Volvo OC for about a week or 2 and I think that it would be beneficial to post over here. If people want to look for the original thread it's in the General thread.

"I've had 15! Notice of Intended Prosection for speeding!
Yep....I really have had 15 Notice of Intended Prosection for speeding!

and yep i was driving.

However, they were all at work and in the response car going to emergencies, and they all arrived on station for me today along with everyone elses

For some reason, a certain police force that covers my area (naming no names) has decided to start issuing us all with NIPs if we go more then 20mph over the speed limit. No other force i know of is doing that.

Even though we verify we are on the way to a 999 call, they have decided to issue us all with NIPs and have to submit a report to them why we were going over 20mph above the speed limit, and then they will decided if to go a head with the NIP or not.

So people. If you start seeing Ambulances with the blues on etc driving not very fast to emergencies you now know why....You know it's only someones life we're dealing with and not some bilking or testing out our new police car!!!

So maybe Plod should appoint a senior Plod (with vast motoring experience) as the chap who looks at various incidents involving speed and circumstance BEFORE they start sending NIPs to poor paramedics and rozzers and applying the 'benefit of the doubt' rule.

that's what used to happen...before everything was civilianised
