I have an ageing VW Sharan, not a mechanically minded guy.

It is a diesel,

It is struggling to get up slopes and hills, of which there are many in Gloucestershire..

on the flat it is struggling to find acceleration....

engine sounds fine, recently had new drive belt, although problems was occuring BEFORE that change. Any ideas?

Is it bad news? or simple and cheap repair? Read more

piston power

When was it last serviced?

If the airfilter is blocked with dirt it will run poor, same for fuel filter etc.

Also check for a sticking brake not uncommon, and can go unoticed, you have plenty to go at!

But well worth doing. good luck.

Three weeks ago I part exchanged my car at a car dealers 135 miles North of my house.
Out of curiosity I have looked for it on Auto Trader and found it for sale at a car dealer back down south but it says 119,000 miles not the 154,000 I sold it at.
Should I do something as I am peeved about it . What can I do without incriminating myself ? Read more

What! He can have a pony for a monkey?

Have you got a petrol filler cap for my Skoda?............Seems a fair swap.

I seriously think this (tinyurl.com/3nv7ps) might be the best Fiesta that I'm going to come across. Do you think that offering 1200 is too low?

Better that the clutch has just been done than just about to go and the ad sounds genuine.

Hi all,

Some of you may have seen my thread on BMW F650CS v Honda Firestorm.

Well, I've ruled out the Firestorm as not commuter friendly, being a real stretch to the bars and a bit big to move about comfortably for me (only 5'5")

I saw a 650CS, but it was a shed. Nice enough, but there aren't any other near me (a rare beast).

Anyway.

I did have a sit on a 2000 MY Fazer- seemed to be just the ticket. Short enough for me to paddle around, nice and upright, faired, fuel gauge (this is still unusual on a motorcycle), and nearly 100bhp to play with. The one I saw was way overpriced, but I'm off to see a more reasonable sounding one on saturday (2000W, 18k, 12m MOT & tax, good condition, £1700). But, at a dealer, I also had a sit on an unfaired 2007 reg SV650 (3300 miles), which was up for £2995. Seems like a bargain (compared to others I have seen advertised), and I do love a nice V-twin (Micron pipe legal but 'fruity'). No MOT to worry about for a while, looks fantastic in red.

I will test ride both on the weekend, which should help my decision, but might well not be definitive.

So, what I have to do is find enough reasons convince myself (and the Mrs) to spend the extra £1300 or so on the SV, or just get the Fazer (assuming it's decent) and have enough left for a tooth implant (instead of a bridge)..

Thoughts appreciated!

Many TIA,

Alex.

My username should suggest what I think of the SV ...
I did like the Fazer 600 on carbs - I didn't like it so much when injected; the engine had the wrong tuning for the style of bike (IMO).

Take a look at the UK based forums for both bikes - the SV certainly had an active forum when I had mine. I think Yamaha dealers are better than Suzuki dealers generally - but I don't use bike dealers much.
I still miss my SV - it was just so much fun.

I don't think you could go wrong with either bike, in good condition.
Good luck with the viewings.

New job about to start - car use will be minimal. Therefore car will be in garage untill weekend use. Anything to keep an eye out for? Its a 53 plate Diesel Vectra with 90k on the clock, someone told me about brakes corroding and electrical issues? Is it worth firing it up everyday to tick the engine over?

I was contemplating getting rid of it and having a small cheap motor, but I guess I'd have the same issues - or would I?

Any thoughts appreciated! Read more

They are stood out in fields for months/years even before you buy them brand-new!

Not if it's a factory order with optional extras. It's worth specifying an option just to make sure it comes straight from the factory.
Sticky Toffee

Hi, hoping that somebody can help me here. I have an 03 plate Fiesta with 75k on the clock. Recently when I try to shift into 3rd the clutch becomes stiff and wont budge. I have to drop it back into 2nd then take it into neutral and shake the stick, after this is loosens again and will go into 3rd.
This doesn't happen all the time though but there doesn't seem to be any connection between when it does do it?
Any help would be great. Thanks. Read more

Hello,

I haven't had this problem myself but a friend had this problem on a Rover, it turned out to be a problem with the gear linkage between the lever and the box. There was a rubber bearing that had come loose, the rubber had split and because third gear was a backward move on the box it stuck whereas all other gears were to the side or back. This made the linkage stick on third only. It was a cheap enough repair. Get the car jacked up and have an assistant move through the gears while you watch the linkage move. The problem should be obvious. Failing this it could be an internal gearbox fault which would probably mean a new or reconditioned box.

Bilboman

I have to admit to mimsing in certain conditions. Let me first point out that I drive in the north of Spain, which is, of course, nothing like driving in the UK. (There are tolls everywhere, M'way cameras are mounted behind gantry-mounted LED panels the size of a tennis court and traffic police, apart from in the Basque Country, are all over the place.)
Returning from a business trip last Thursday afternoon, I found myself on a quiet stretch of motorway. What the heck, on with the cruise (100/60) and it stayed on nearly all the way to the outskirts of Bilbao. Whenever I saw a huddle of cars darting onto the motorway from a sliproad I would gently accelerate up to the max. 120/75 and when all was clear again I let the car slow down to 100/60. This happened four times in an hour and a half. I was, naturally, in the nearside lane. I can honestly say that I got in nobody's way, never caused anyone to slow down, took barely an extra 20 minutes for the journey and the trip computer was showing over 60 mpg when I reached home.
(It's the FULL TIME mimsers who deserve to be taken off the roads permanently, preferably by bazooka.)

I don't go along with this stereotyping of mimsers by make of car, sartorial style, age or gender. In the real world the only way to spot one is by the body language of their vehicle rather than its make or presumed condition.

Mimsers come in all shapes and sizes, and so do their cars. Obviously though there are regional variations.

I was interested in the history of the old Aust Services by the Severn Bridge, used to have a great view of the bridge, now a much smaller service station without a direct view of the bridge and is strangely called "Severn View" !! The original building still exists though is privately owned. Read more

Have you seen the urinals that rise out of the ground, at night, in central London? There's three on a central pillar. No privacy there!

Hi,
I have a petrol primera with 150k miles. It continues to run very well except for a power dip of some sort around 3750 rpm.

When accelerating in say 3rd gear, the car will accelerate smoothly up to this point, then the power seems to dip for a split second and then push on again past this point.

Any thoughts on what might be causing this?

Many thanks,

I had a quick look at that site and it sounds promising. Many thanks for your help.
