I have an ageing VW Sharan, not a mechanically minded guy.
It is a diesel,
It is struggling to get up slopes and hills, of which there are many in Gloucestershire..
on the flat it is struggling to find acceleration....
engine sounds fine, recently had new drive belt, although problems was occuring BEFORE that change. Any ideas?
Is it bad news? or simple and cheap repair?

The obvious one is an air-flow meter fault - commonly referred to as a MAF. [Only use dealer parts - cheap rubbish ones everywhere.]
Having somone competent check the diagnostics for things like pump timing and airflow data would be the best first step.

When was it last serviced?
If the airfilter is blocked with dirt it will run poor, same for fuel filter etc.
Also check for a sticking brake not uncommon, and can go unoticed, you have plenty to go at!
