Is there any difference in the procedure for rejecting a duff car if you've got it from a broker rather than from a dealer?

If bought other than 'face to face' what about the Distance Selling Regulations.
Just purchased a 53 plate 1.8 TDCi. Noticed wind noise and a draught coming through the front passenger door. I changed all the seals but the problem still persists. Is there any way of adjusting the door? I've noticed that the door must have been off in a previous life, so obvously hasn't been put on correctly. It's as if it needs to close by 1mm or so more.
I've seen some grub screws on the hinges, do they have anything to do with it?
Thanks for any help. Read more
if you look at the striker/catch on the inside door pillar opposite hinges.
you can adjust this undo the 2 tork screws no.40 i think .
undo the screws enough so you can lightly tap/adjust this catch futher back towards the interior of the vehicle this will pull the door to closing tighter on the rubbers .
perhaps go to a local body shop its only a 5 min job to adjust .
I have a 2005 x type estate that has just been in for a number of warrantee bits and bobs, one of them being there is an intermittent fault when trying to lock with key button.
Once a week (ish) the key will not lock the car. To rectify require the engine to be started and turned off again - this has always got whatever is wrong, back in sync.
The first trip from the garage after it was "fixed", it did it again.
I believe they reprogd the keys, which has not worked.
Has anyone else come across this ?

wife's car, 2005 model, did it a couple of times 2 years ago, had both keys re-programmed at main dealer under warranty and it cured it, never happened since
Have decided now we want to buy a Fiat Punto Grande, probably 2006,have £5000 max ,but would rather spend nearer £4000.
Looking at the 1.2 or 1.4 maybe, wouldn't mind the dynamic which has the aircon, but don't mind next model down if it's a good deal.
Thought we had found some at a car supermarket, but they turned out to be ex rental,so maybe give them a miss.
I am looking on behalf someone who has just passed their test, and although we do have someone who knows about engines to look over them and test drive them, what tips can you give us when trying to negociate the price.Would we be better private or trade? I am female.looking for a car with my son. Read more
Don`t go near it. They can be very problematic.
Just by chance, (I certainly have no interest in this) I found a link to a certain `detailing` site and in one thread two blokes are looking at paint through big magnifying glasses and using torches.
The comment below the photo went something along the lines of. " I can`t really reject it (new car) because you can`t see it with the naked eye"
The blemish being a slightly raised area, as seen through a microscope, or imagine a halved grain of rice shrunk 100 times.
No link because there were faces, reg numbers and even a street name in the background.
Regarding intense `detailing` I would be surprised if in similar situations, that the car was the only interest receiving that level of attention.
Personally, I`m a slob with upper (not under body) cleaning and paintwork (never polished) but everything of a mechanical/pipes/grease/rustproofing, nature is done with thoroughness.
So, How is your personality expressed through the car? and does that expression extend elsewhere?
Put another way. Is that use of fuel additives reflected in the patio door hinges receiving `care` and do you consider you have `free choice` in any of these matters?
;)

think probably the best comparison I can draw of it is it's the motoring equivilent of tending to your garden. Personally, as long as the grass is tidy, I couldn't give a stuff about the state of a garden. But clearly some people get great pleasure from tending to their garden.
Put like that it does make more sense although I don't think it's for me all that attention to detail. Now if you were talking about growing the perfect standard fuschia I could give you some tips . . . . .
Thinking I can drive, I took the IAM test about 18 years ago and been a member ever since.
Traditionally the only car insurance companies that seemed to acknowledge it, or give a discount were more expensive so there seemed little benefit.
More recently with the advent of price comparison websites which to ask for driving licence also have a facility to input 'IAM'.
Would saying you're an IAM refer to passing the test? Or being a member?
I am asking as I am really unimpressed with the increase in membership from £18 to £30 and I am thinking of not renewing.
So in future should I say yes to the IAM input box as I did pass their test? Or no as I won't be an IAM member when I renew?
Should I just tick yes as I've taken the RoSPA test and quite enjoy the 3 yearly retests?

Thanks Michael. It's nice to get some hard data. My age, driving record and value of car means my premiums are far less.
I'll maintain my RoSPA membership that comes with 3 yearly retests, but the IAM subscription looks decidly bad value to me. Discounts with the AA and RAC? Well just fill up at Tescos and use the loyalty card points to pay for discounted AA cover.
Hi,
Thanks for looking, First post so hope its not too heavy.
Quick summary :
I bought a car from a garage 3 weeks ago with a 30 days parts and labour warranty (I rejected their extended warranty, better on the web) and took it back after a week.(They have now had it for 2 weeks and it seems to be waiting on the "Sales Manager" approving the ABS work due to the cost, but he is never available or is in on monday etc)
Faults :
ESP Light (ABS control unit failure £1200 + Vat)
Brakes Grinding even when not braking(Replaced as "badly corroded")
Air Con Not Working(Now Recharged)
Oil Pooling at the filler cap (New Filler Cap Fitted)
It was MOT'D for 12 months prior to pick up by the selling garage with an advisory that the front discs were pitted although the sharp salesman never gave us the sheet. Prior to the sale he commented that they were just noisy as the car had been sittting but the car would go through the workshop and anything needing done would be.
Does anyone know if a car should a car pass an MOT with the ABS clearly not working and requiring new discs and pads that they did not hesitate to fit the same day as soon as i took it back in.
Would I have grounds for rejecting the car and would I be expected to pay for any of these repairs if i kept it.
Thanks

FYI, its very common these days, for dealers to allow a 2nd hand car to go out with known faults, hoping the customer doesn't pick up on them for a month or so, so as the faults can be paid for by the warranty company - little known fact, most 2nd hand car warranty's only start a month after the customer takes delivery, so your 12 month warranty is in fact 11 months!
also before you spend loads on extended warranty's, check the small print - there is a lot that wont be covered, that you would expect would be, as I myself found out the hard way, and Im in the blooming motor trade!
I have a re-occurring fault with the engine management light coming on/off whilst driving.
When engine hot and over 60mph and on motorway and at cruising speed the light comes on.
When I accelerate with lack of power at this point the light goes out after a while.
The codes revealed knock sensor faults on all cylinders.
My local garage reset and they returned, so had knock sensor replaced, fault still exists.
Engine has also become noisy, is regularly serviced and currently at 65,000 miles approx.
I had a full service 8,000 miles ago and do approx. 20,000 miles per year.
The garage is suggesting changing the oil?
Any ideas?

Thanks all I am having an oil change planned for thursday but will talk to the garage and suggest issues raised by you both. I shall check the oil level tomorrow.
Today after warming up due to knocking I have limited power an car is too slow to overtake even a bus or lorry so timing is fully retarded.
Will let you know outcome.
Recently my 2000 vauxhall vectra has been making a beeping noise (no it's not my mobile phone-i already checked) intermittantly. At first i thought perhaps my tyres were low as my husbands citroen sometimes making a warning noise like that when a corner is taken too tighly. I have now checked my tyres but every now again the car still makes a 'beep' or two. The haynes manual does not mention this problem. I have had this car for just over a year now and it is only in the past week this noise has been heard. Any idea's?

Does it do it when you remove the key from the ignition/turn off the engine? And has it got a factory fit alarm? Finally, it is something like 3 or 4 beeps?
If so, then the backup batteries within the power sounder are on their way out. Unless you replace the power sounder shortly, you will soon start to have the alarm going off at random intervals. It *is* possible to change the batteries that are inside the unit, but sourcing them is now becoming as rare as hens teeth.
It's a common MOT failure point so there should be lots of garages who can do it quite cheaply.
