Another question please guys. My 98 406 est. on 195m and still going strong. Recently and most notable in slow moving traffic, when lifting off accelerator at say 1500-1800 revs I hear a light clunk. I'm sure it's from the front offside. Not the anti-roll bar drop links as I changed them both yesterday. Nothing else looked obviously wrong, any thoughts on the most likely cause. Thanks. Read more

Check the top engine mounting, drivers side and the bottom stabiliser, quite easy to see. The bottom one particularly gets soaked with oil causing the rubber to go soft and allowing the engine to move excessively.

When I had the bonnet up on my Ford Focus 1.8 petrol, I noticed that on the Side of the timing belt cover a couple of small areas that looked darker than the rest of the surface of the cover (which is dark grey).

Now I am concerned that this could be engine oil and if so where does this sort of leak start and would it show up as a drop in level on the dipstick or could it possibly just be from rain water that has fell on it whilst the bonnet has been opened on a wet day ?

I was looking into an engine bay. There was a small modern petrol engine, with modern covers and so on, but space all round the engine with every DIY item being accessible.

Does this exist?

It always makes me cringe when I see a 30+ year old classic left covered
in salt. I wonder if these cars have been lovingly cared for by decades only
to be bought as a `trendy` car and then given modern abuse.

I have, sadly, a confession to make.

My Merc W124 was clearly pampered by its one previous owner in the 14 years and 68,000km he owned it. Literally no noteworthy scratches or evidence of touch up paint anywhere. Well, last week I managed to reverse it into a metal gatepost. Only a very small area on the rear bumper where I've removed the top layer of paint. So frustrating though, being responsible for the first "proper" scratch on a car that's now nearly 15 years old. Trying to decide whether to get the bumper resprayed or not.

I own a 2004 Vauxhall Meriva,Easytronic Enjoy.
Despite reading some negative comments about the model,so far not too bad.However..whilst looking underneath at something else, I discovered that the front engine mounting bush had totally disappeared. Not a shred of rubber left, nothing, and this after just 23000 miles.
Could anyone recommend a reasonably priced parts manufacturer where I can obtain a replacement?I dont think this is a main dealer only part.
Although I dont have a Haynes manual, the job itself looks pretty straightforward, although I would appreciate any advice on that also.
Cheers. Read more

Not much discretion allowed now; computerization has tied the tester's hands by an enormous amout.

Engine mounts were never testable unless they impinged on another area.

Hi I have a large scrape and dent on the rear OS quarter panel. I have looked for a new one online and found what I think is a good deal. I know a spray painter and someone who could weld the body part on. My friend has said to me that because my clio is a 3 door the rear quarter panel is part of the chassis and will need to be cut out. Does anyone know anything about this?

Thanks

Don't think this is a quarter panel that I need, as the panel goes behind the window.

Hi, need some help here. My 52 reg mazda 6 has been in for corrosion on the rear wheel arches back in feb. I havce now discovered rust coming through from the inside on both the bonnet and front wheel arches. I reported this to the mazda body shop about a month ago and they have just got back to me to say that as the arch is not perforated this is not covered by the warranty.

The rust is actually bubbling the paintwork and the underneath of the bonnet flakes away with the rust. I can upload pictures if necessary.
I would appreciate any advice as to how to proceed from here.
Thanks Read more

I mean are their any other options with dealing with the dealer or does this really mean that the warranty is not worth much.
I am thinking maybe I need to change the car which is a pity as apart from the rust only other issue with the car since bought has been an exhaust bracket apart from discs , pads and tyres. Other than that everything still original.
I have been offered £3000 part ex at a supermarket and have looked at a astra estate or have seen an 2006 Avensis Tourer t180 for £10795 with 38k on the clock but cant decide. Astra estate seems cheap for 6 month old 1.8 sri 8k full bodykit 18" alloys etc for £10k but am tempted by the avensis.
Thanks

Hi all,
Bit of advice needed here I have to choose a new company car and just wish to see what you all think.
Currently have a Skoda Octavia Ambiente 1.9 TDi very happy with the car but would like to change from the Skoda Octavia.
I have got three choices in mind,
Mazda 6 S Diesel, Seat Altea XL XL MPV Diesel or new Skoda Superd S or another Octavia but the elegance model.
Really fancy the Mazda as its a bit left field but would appreciate comments on all three cars.
I do about 30,000 miles a year predominantly on A and B roads with not much motorway miles
I can have all the usual Astra Golf Focus stuff as well but I have had these in the past so hence my rather odd-ball choices.
Thanks Read more

iv only had this car for a few weeks and for some reason it cuts out after 15 mins with no warning then a light on the dash comes up with ncvt. i can start the car up normally again but am very worried about what this means. also sometimes the car jerks slightly and feels as though it may just cut out until i rev the engine.

Also has anyone heard of 'not enough air in the fuel tank' as apparently i also have this problem which also makes the car cut out. as you can imagine it would be quicker to get a bus the amount of times it stalls. Read more
