Any other drivers caught in speed trap on A5 out of Llangollen?
Last Sunday, 27 July 2008, I was in a stream of traffic leaving Llangollen on the A5 Berwyn Road. It was a 30mph limit and when I noticed the highly visible bright yellow camera van positioned a short distance before the national speed limit signs I checked my speedo which showed 33mph. Allowing for tolerance I was sure I was OK. Today I received intended prosecution notice for doing 39mph which I cannot believe to be true.
Has anybody else been caught by this trap and interested in finding out if the camera was correctly calilbrated? Read more
Hi,
My OH drove my Vauxhall Zafira diesel the other day and said my clutch was going because the revs were higher than the mph whilst changing from 3rd to 4th gear.
Although the car has felt a little sluggish (it's due for a service) there has been no problems changing gear . Is it likely that the clutch is going and should I get it replaced asap or wait until it gets worse (could this cause further damage).
I've been quoted between £700-£1000 for a new clutch, which is a fair bit of money to me, is this about what I should expect to pay?
Can anyone recommend a good clutch repair centre in the NG16 area (north nottinghamshire)
Thanks for your help folks.

I've seen some B7 A4 2.0 diesels that have twin exhausts, and others with a single exhaust.
Do the 4wd variants have twin pipes for packaging reasons, or is it a cost option on any car?
Just curious, as the VW Passat using essentially the same floorpan and engine only ever has a single exhaust I believe .... Read more

An odd request, but I don't know what size socket (if it is a hexagonal plug even) for my daughter's Citroen Xsara Picasso 1.6 petrol. I want to change the oil for her, but until I get the ramps here, and the car, I can't have a look. I'll probably need another socket as our set was stolen. It would save me an extra journey if I could find out what I need beforehand. Also, is the filter easy to get at ?
Thanks Read more
My Peugeot sump plugs have been 21mm with an 8mm hexagonal centre recess. This is probably the cheapest way of getting the appropriate tool as an Allen key as long as the plug is not too tight. Regards, Paul.
Hi,
I'm looking to buy either a second hand Honda Jazz or Nissan Note and have about £5000 to spend (or maybe a little more) - which one should I go for?
I previously had a honda civic and was very impressed with the low running costs, one of the reasons why I am wanting to sell my VW passat tdi (great car but I don't really need all that space and power and do mostly short runs).
I'm looking for economy, both in fuel consumption and maintenance, space for the occasional 5 passengers and a dog.
I prefer the look of the Nissan and think it looks a bit more grown up than the Honda which I think looks a bit tinny and boxy. I also assume that interior build quality will be a bit better on the Nissan as it's a newer release - am I right in thinking this?
The Honda seems to be the better buy looking at economy, but can I justify buying the Nissan for its looks? Also, will there be a dramatic price drop when the new Jazz comes out or will they hold their value okay?
Looking forward to hearing from you! Read more
How about a Renault Modus? I may be biased here but we've had ours from new since late 2004 and nothing has gone wrong/fallen off/broken etc in all that time - apart from a front headlight bulb blowing [which as a pain in the **** to replace, but not too bad once you know what needs to be removed to replace it].
The Note shares the same platform as the Modus. We specified a full length glass sun roof which is really great.
It's a good car and despite the usual horror stories that go with Renault's ours has been a pleasure to own and drive.
I would even go as far to say that the new Grande Modus has got my attention and may well replace our current car when the time comes.....
I believe you can now pick up the Modus second hand for around the £5k mark. Plenty to be had too.
The blower only works on speed 3 and 4 which are noisy. Have sumised by surfing that I need a new resistor pack. Any ideas where the offending part is and how to get to it? Any ideas on where to get it cheap?

A bit silly replying to my own message but I've cracked it. FREE manuals for the Micra available at
www.eserviceinfo.com/index.php?what=search2
In order to solve the resistor pack problem, download the instrument panel and the air conditioner files. These are unfortunately "rar" files which if you can't open, download 7-zip software for free and it will convert them to pdf. I'm that worn out think I'll take the car to the garage!1 Gray
Hi guys,
I own a 1996 MK 1 Fiat Punto 1.2 75 ELX MPI. About 3 months ago my head gasket went, I had it changed at a car garage and when I got it back it wasn't timed correctly. I re-timed it myself and it was then running okay and it was running okay and starting first time
Until a couple of weeks in it was needing more turning over to start. This problem grew and grew until it will not start at all.
I have changed the plugs, checked for any loose or damaged HT leads, dampness etc. My battery is good and I even cleaned the face of the crank sensor. A lot of people keep telling me it is the crank sensor, is this right ? Can anyone out there help me ?
Thank You

I used to have a punto (until it was nicked) but it always used to start if it'd had been left but if you went to a shop/for petrol then tried to start it again it wouldnt for sometimes over an hour, then it got to the point where it wouldnt start at all.
I had everything changed including starter motor but it kept happening.
Turns out that was the crank sensor (pretty cheap to sort out too) someone mentioned the temp sensor that went on mine about 6 months earlier too, again was cheap to sort out.
Since i had crank sensor done never had a starting problem again.
Hi, I have just bought a Honda Civic 1.6 Executive. This came with the Sat nav unit but the DVD is missing. I have contacted Honda and they say that will cost £200.
Questions:
1. Can I get the DVD cheaper anywhere?
2. How can I find out what make/model the Sat Nav unit is?
thanks

this was not a private sale but it was bought with the knowledge that the DVD was missing. I thought I could get the DVD from honda, but did not realise it would cost so much.
Also I can probable live without the sat nav but the problem is the screen has a constant message on it saying something like "Please insert MAP DVD...". With this on there I cannot use any of the Audio controls apart from play CD's and the radio. I cannot change the time, audio settings etc..
can anyone help? i have a 2002 v70d5 with a good service history by a main dealer volvo agent the problem is when driven normally it cuts out after about 6/10 miles. It runs very well with no smoke and starts well, however if driven hard it gives no problems.
many thanks portacabin1

Sorry it was so long to respond, but i have had a lot of confusing trouble with this car.
As i was driving home from the people i bought it of, nice and steady about 60mph the car cut out dead with all the symptoms of a cambelt failure, all the dash lights came on, oh =hit, i reluctantly tried to start the car waiting for the clanking of pistons meeting valves but not the case, it started and ran for another 20 mile or so.
At this point i must point out i have been in thr garage trade fo well over 20 years and i am normaly the one that people come running to for help, i did all the normal things like fuel up even though the gauge was half full, check all conections for tightness and hed for home again. The car was very scarey to drive and i figured if was going at a good speed i would have roling distance to find a safe resting place for my next breakdown, it never did! but you can only drive at 90 + for so long before a different form of trouble comes, home safe, and time for reserch.
Fuel filter was first, no good! quick look at codes using the latest volvo singing and dancing reader, came up airflow meter (i dont think so i thought) but independant volvo man in tamworth area asured me, broke down just down the road, MONEY BACK.
Help came on the internet as someone had the same problem, Answer get the ecu upgraded at a main dealer, i did in coventry cost just over £60 job done, ran like a different car for abour 1200 miles then the fault came back, then back to volvo they said the problem was the throtle body on the engine and quoted me £180 ish, they rang
me and explained there was no throtle body on my car as it was a d5 (i told them it was and its on there computer silly billys) but the great news is that they fixed my car and traced it to a faulty fuel relay and bad wiring in the fuse box under the bonnet, im happy and i dearly hope this helps someone els if it does please reply many thanks to all..
regards and happy christmas to all volvo drivers.

Are there any motorcycle alarm experts on this site?
I'm having some trouble programming a new transmitter for the Datatool Stealth alarm/immobiliser system on my Kawasaki ZZR600. The previous transmitter died (second time since I've owned the bike), so I ordered a new one. Identical model and part numbers to the previous one.
I've followed the instructions to the letter, but something odd happened, and now I'm struggling.
I took the lid off the alarm box, and removed the internal battery. I then removed the inline fuse from the live feed. So far so good.
I located the two green tagged "loop wires" (not used on this bike, and taped up separately). I then joined them using a block connector, and ran a wire from this block connector to the battery +ve terminal. The alarm started going off - or rather I could hear its relays clicking (the siren was disconnected).
I then switched on the ignition, and reconnected the inline fuse. As I went to reconnect the internal battery, I caught a whiff of smoke, and was shocked to see the alarm end of the inline fuse holder glowing, and burning away to nothing. I quickly shut the ignition off and pulled the fuse again. The fuse holder was totalled, but the inline fuse itself was completely intact (verified by multimeter). This kind of makes sense, as the battery side of the fuse holder was just fine.
I found a spare inline fuse holder in my toolbox, and wired this in place, refitting the original fuse. Now the alarm is doing all sorts of weird stuff. If I repeat the instructions as per the leaflet (and as done before with total success), sometimes the alarm will go off, when I turn on the ignition, and other times it does nothing. It will not accept the new transmitter whatever happens. There has been no repeat episode of the burning, and the new fuse holder is fine.
Any suggestions? How easy are these things to uninstall?
Cheers
DP

Don't know if anyones going to reply to this thread since its so old, but heregoes. I've got the same bike with the same alarm and its driving me nuts! I want to work on the bike, I need to check the valve clearances, but the alarm won't let me disconnect the battery. I disarmed the alarm with the fob, took out the inline fuse, and disconnected the battery negative terminal and the alarm went off. I disarmed it after putting the fuse back in and it reset itself. There's advice in the thread about taking the thing out completely, but its actually a very good alarm (too good!) so I dont want to wreck it, but it might come to that, its come very close to hammer blows. To cap it all its got, I think torx 15 security screws in the alarm case, which I need to undo if I'm going to take out the internal batteries, and I can't seem to get one anywhere.
Any advice would be appreciated....
