I have an A3 2.0 tdi. The cooling fanstays unless I disconnect the battery, I have disconnected what I believe to be the cooling sensor (between battery box and engine),
but the fan just keeps going. I believe there must be a relay some where that operates the fan and would be grateful to know where to look plus any other suggestions.
There was a faint small of electrical burning that possibly is a relay but no fuses have blown.

Hi guys. There is an intermittent fault with my 54 reg Accord which affects the power upon accelerating. There's no problem in 1st gear, but occasionally in 2nd, and around 50% of the time in the higher gears, the car pinks at around 2,800-4,000 rpm. It feels as though the injector or fuel line is starving the engine of diesel for a split-second, similar to the effect of a faulty lumbar sensor. It makes the car jerk about 4-8 times, then it rectifies itself at around 4k rpm. (It's a similar sensation to hitting the brakes for a split-second when speeding up.)

I took it to the garage, but they said that they couldn't find anything wrong with it. (Despite having it for 3 days.) Have any of you got the faintest idea what may be the problem?

Thank you in advance. Read more

The 2.2 Honda diesel is not fitted with a timing belt - it's got a chain which, under normal circumstances, does not need to be routinely replaced.

Anyone know much oil a shock absorber contains, and how much could it lose before its effectiveness is compromised?

One of my front shocks has a slight leak but its not of immediate concern according to the tyre fitting workshop staff this morning.
Do I change it now or get it done at MOT time later this year?

Does the MOT tester bounce the corners to tell if its ok or do they perform a more 'scientific test'. Read more

Settle it with a custard pie fight, video it and post it here.

I would be most grateful if anyone assist with or has anyone experienced the unacceptable problem I have with this Sept 06 V70 D5(185)SE LUX geartronic. - The cacophony of noises reverberates round the cabin c/w a vibration worst between 1500-1800 revs. It has been like this since new. I was invited to a "Freedom test drive " by volvo and drove the same model,- that one was really quiet. Has anyone else had this experience? Volvo say it is ok!!
Does anyone know what the standards are for cars in terms of noise and vibration? or can anyone assist in where I might find out such detail.

Hi gizbourne.

Rest assured the car was not traded in to a Dealer in Hampshire. It is currently for sale at a non Volvo franshised Dealer in North London. My engine vibrated at the same rev range. Like you worst when under torque going uphill, & under excessive accleration. It was also bad in 5th & 6th gear on the motorway when picking up speed, going through that rev range.

STEER WELL CLEAR if the car is vibrating, as it took me a long time to try & sort it out. (which was never solved). Lots of differant things were tried to solve the problem. I'm sure it was caused by a faulty Injector? Or as my local Volvo Dealership stated the Conrod was bent due to flood damage?

If you do purchase one, My advice is to deal with a Franshised Volvo Dealer. Who give you a full one year Volvo guarantee, & 30 day exchange if you are not happy.

The V70 is either a V70 D5 (185 BHP) or V70D (165BHP). Both are exactly the same engines but with a differant chip installed. The D5 185 is a lot more responsive!

I have driven lots of V70's, all have been very smooth except the last one.

Where abouts are you based.

Good Luck

My Jazz had an 'advisory' on its last MOT, the parking brake efficiency was low at 16%. Now it's never been (since new) the best parking brake I've ever had, but it does the job.

MOT time has come around again and as there was some corrosion on the discs and the pads were getting ready I decided to change the discs and pads.

Whilst it felt better for the change it's still not going to set the world on fire. Anyway, it's been for the MOT today and once again 'parking brake efficiency poor 17%'!

Anyone else having trouble with this. I see in the car-by-car section that it gets a mention.

The cable and all the actuators are free and any tightening of the cable results in drag on the wheels. Read more

RE alloy wheels. There was one key property of aluminium that was why they were used to start with - weight. The best suspension compliance with the road is gained with the lowest unsprung weight and lowest need for heavy damping. Best grip for least weight. The other points about mechanical precision of castings vs pressings are also true of course. Alloys best all round.

My handbrake goes right to the top when I pull it up and still its not stopping the car when stationary, I have to leave it in gear to make sure it doesn't move.

Any advice on adjusting the handbrake would be much appreciated...

I would like to change the gearbox oil on my Passat. I have bought some Redline MT-90 oil from Opie Oils. It is 75W-90 GL4, so I think it is suitable.

Please can anyone tell me where the drain plug is, or if there is a drain plug. Or should the old oil be sucked out? It does not say anything about drain plugs in my Haynes manual. Read more

The car is 7 years old, but fairly low milage. The gearbox works perfectly OK and I know that you do not have to change the oil.

But, I thought it would be a good idea to change the oil. I am not so sure now!

I wonder who makes VW gearbox oil?

The saga with the in-laws car choice continues - they've cooled off on the Volvo V50 for a while, and having rejigged some finances, are now considering a new mkV Golf 2.0TDI estate.

I have been rather alarmed by some of the admittedly anecdotal evidence that I've been privy to recently with regard to this engine. One of the guys at work had HGF on his 55 plate Audi A3 2.0TDI a few months ago, and another had oil pump drive failure on a 2.0 TDI Passat. I also know of two Golfs - both on 57 plates that are in the main dealers now with HGF, and the recent post on here of a Passat needing two engine replacements inside of 25k

I know this engine is used all over the place, and only so much can be read into a few failures, but the HGF issue does seem to be quite common, as well as other stories that they're just not as tough or unfailingly reliable as the old 1.9 unit.

The driveability and grunt of this engine is beyond question, but what is the reliability really like?

Cheers

Aren't there two different 2.0 engines -- the 8v and the 16v?

I've heard some bad things about the bored-out 8v motor, especially in DPF-equipped Superbs.

Please help me with this one, I am an expat trying to understand what is now the case in the UK having just fallen out big-time with the owner of a car that I thought I had bought to export to France.
When the car was put through the MoT test, or DoE test or whatever it's called now, it passed but with a series of 'advisories' including a crack in the windscreen and wear to front suspension bushes.
I fell out with the owner and consequently won't have a car we really liked because I insisted the car must be absolutely right before I exported it and it immediately faced the French 'controle technique' test.
The owner said the advisories don't really mean anything and should be expected to happen with any car more than a few years old.
Now, in France, advisories at a controle technique test are in two categories: Faults that have to be rectified without a re-test and those that have to be done and the vehicle re-tested within two months.
My question is, so I don't go through this unfortunate exercise again and be accused of timewasting, is 'what are you supposed to do if your car is tested and 'advisories' are listed? Read more

I would suggest the advisory is a note for those drivers who would normally not look at or have the car looked at until the next MOT is due, probably having an illegal and unroadworthy car in between.

Most decent garages used to give out advisories before it came on the official printout. Most of the unscrupulous garages used to tell you it needed replaced to pass the MOT, or just did it anyway.
