When in Athens a short while ago we got a taxi to the Acropolis fo the usual touristy bit and it wasquite reasonable. The taxi back however was 10 time more expensive and we had no time to argue as we had to rush to get back on the boat. Apparently this is a common scam over there and if this happens we were told afterwards you should refuse to pay and demand the immediate presence of the loal constabulary.

Dont get me started on Athens taxis, honeymooned there and stayed just outside of town in Glyfada, all in all did about ten taxi trips, only one was bang on what it said on the meter, a pleasant young chap who was obviously new, he got a big tip.
One driver tried to charge us five times what was on the meter, sent the wife out of the cab into hotel, I ranted for what seemed like a very long time, he was having none of it, so I threw what it said on the meter at him and exited the cab.
Must have worked as he just drove off.
Athens has been the worst place I have experienced for rip off taxis and I have travelled on business all over Turkey, Italy, Spain and numerous places in the Far East where I was expecting to be ripped off terribly, never had anything even near the hassle I had in Athens.
Hang on now I think about it, Heathrow black cabs can be complete horrors.
Rant over.

Mrs gsb has decided she would like a mini 1. On HJ's review it says new gearbox fitted after July 04. What is easiest way to check build date.

You can always try looking at the labels sewn on to the seat belts. There is usually a date there or sometimes there is a manufacture date embossed underneath the ashtray.
Perhaps calling BMW customer service quoting the VIN (chassis) number might help.
Further to my post yesterday, what if any, potential damage apart from belt can be caused by holding my 192m 2.1td foot to the floor for 2-3 seconds. The, what sounded like valve bounce was not music to my ears.

I too believe that no damage will be caused, unless the engine is neglected and or worn out, with rattling bearings or maybe a cambelt that should have been changed and hasn't been.
IIRC for many years, and maybe still there, in MOT testing stations there was a warning notice to owners of diesel cars notifying them of the severity of the diesel engine smoke test, and to be sure that the cam belt wasn't on its last legs.
If you think about it diesels have always, until recent years had to be thrashed right up to the limiter to get any sort of performance out of them, this low speed turbocharged power is a relatively new thing in car diesels, though has been the case for more years in commercials of course.
My first diesel cars without turbo's had to be caned mercilessly once warm to get any sort of progress.
99% of white vans for example (think builders transits) are thrashed to the absolute limilts, but seldom blow up. Couldn't you just cringe sometimes at the roaring sound as a tranny van goes blasting away from the lights.
Thats why the rev limiter is fitted to the fuel pump, if it can't stand a couple of minutes on the limiter at the MOT station, then its had it IMO.
Hi All
I have a 'T' reg ('99) Tddi Focus estate with 125K on the clock that broke down yesterday. After being towed to the garage it's been diagnosed with a bust fuel pump which will cost £700 for the pump, £300 labour plus VAT on top to replace. (I browsed the owners club website and it seems that this price is pretty much par for the course)
A quick search on autotrader showed a couple of similar cars advertised for around £1700. so what I'm trying to decide at the moment is whether to fork out the dough and hope nothing else goes wrong or scrap it.
Does anyone have any thoughts/guidence or past experince?

Thats a very expensive fuel pump, is that the right price?
Fuel pump went on the 530d a year or so ago, warranty covered it but the cost was only abotu £400 all in...
one of the high pressure pipes is leaking on our car (the pipe comes out of the top of the rack nearest to the left hand side and goes into the pinion) ,although these pipes seperate from the rack i have been told by the dealer they are part of the rack at a cost of over 300 pounds .is it possible to get new pipes made up to fit as you would buy brake pipes, or is there some reason for them being part of the rack assembly. Like it says. I saved 20% on my insurance by finding a filly to put on the insurance. Try it for yourself.
This ends the public service broadcast.

Similar things happen in other areas of insurance. I was renewing our annual travel policy a few years ago and was quoted a premium that I was about to agree to. Then happened to mention (not sure why this hadn't come up previously) that the policy would now be covering not two people but three - the third then a few months old. Suddenly the premium fell by about a quarter.
My question is about my espaces electrical fault at first it would just stall randomly so the garage i used changed two of the sensors. Now the car has started to chug along sometimes at low speed and at times high speed and occasionally still stalls. Its terrible to drive, has anyone else had this problem and how was it cured. ps i have encountred the loss of power problem and a nice man from an emergency break down group suggested what the fault was the recirculating valve so i went home and cleaned it myself its been fine ever since . Unless you have deep pockets, don't buy it.
I have low mileage 03 espace, father in law has 05 scenic both have had many problems with EGR etc.
Mine ran at full throttle on it's own engine oil - cracked inlet manifold is a common fault.
Find a good independent garage and use them for repairs and servicing it will save you a lot of money with better results. Don't think Renault will go straight to a fault, they do it the same way as an independent - by informed guesswork.
I have a 2004 Grand Scenic. I was recently getting new tyres put on and Kwikfit advised that new rear discs and pads were needed but they couldn't do them. They said DONT TOUCH THEM YOURSELF but take it to a dealer. I ahve a Haynes manual and it doesn't lok so bad - does anyone have any advice, please Read more
It depends whether its got 'normal' discs on it or they're the ones with the abs bits and wheel bearing built into them. If they are then you renew the bearing and the abs with the disc as they're all in one.
Just make sure you get the correct ones as there are quite a few different ones fitted. Typical french.
Does anyone know if extreme hot dry weather running has any detrimental effect(s) on an engine?
I picked up a new XC90 on Thursday, and whilst out on a weekend drive the external temperature gauge showed 48 degrees C! (I'm in the Middle East). Yesterday after parking in the sun for a couple of hours the dash read-out was 54 degrees!
I'm aware of long-term damage caused to paintwork etc, and of course the impact of dust, sand etc. in filters, but does the engine itself "suffer" under hot conditions? Or is the engine usually hot when running anyway, so the outside air temperature is irrelevant? First service is 10,000km, then 20K km thereafter.... Read more
Most cars run a bit on the cool side, some very. Perhaps modern cooling systems are more efficient than they used to be, and cars now run as warm as they should, but I slightly doubt it. It could well be that these hot conditions, meaning faster warm-up and warmer running at speed on a light throttle, is actually better for engines than temperate weather. Anyway America and Japan, as well as Italy, France and Spain, regularly suffer high temperatures.

Thanx so much !
