Digital mileage display clock has gone out, everything else that worked before still works. Can I get it back on easily? Will it fail / be refuse an MOT? Thanks in advance.

are you sure the display has its own backlight bulb everything else works?
Also it's not lcd it's the seventies digital watch-type display

Definately has a backlight bulb. If you look carefully, you should still just about to see the display - try shining a torch on it and you will see that it is still there but currently not illuminated from behind.

hi there got a nice disco runs on lpg too
i seem to have 2 problems
coil overheats when ignition left on has 12v feed and seems to have earth on neg side from distributor i am unsure of what originally is correct wiring, seems to be shorting coil.

prob 2 car cuts out dead no apparent reason it still has 12v feed to coil but loses its trigger from distributor then for no apparent reason it starts again, this makes it very hard to rely on it.

could someone please tell me how coil should be wired and should distributor have a neg feed when live is going through it i think poss distributor has a problem but no expert.

car runs well when it is running on gas or lpg

has a mallory distributor fitted with hyfire 4 coil no balast resistor and new leads

had a misfire as mallory coil looked pretty ropey changed it for a intermotor coil(11410)
cured misfire but now using car more seems to highlight other faults(overheating coil and cutting out dead occasionally

any help will be appreciated

thanks nick the parts were already on car when i bought it i just want it to run properly i have no issue with mallory i think it may have been fitted wrongly from the start or else has developed this problem,i am not a performance nut just want reliability.
it had mallory coil as well helfire 4 but no balast so may have fried things but no expert.
have been told original system is un balasted so just a coil and distributor
thanks for your help

polo auto

The instrument panel on my 1999 1.4 Polo petrol automatic has stopped working completely - no speedo, tacho, clock, petrol gauge, etc. I've checked the relevant fuses and they're fine, so I've been told I have to take this to a VW dealer to be looked at. Is this a common problem, and what's likely to be causing it? I'm steeling myself for a fairly hefty repair bil... Read more

Before condemning the instrument panel ,I would suggest disconnecting the battery for 10 mins and re-try.hth

Nev zx

Hi hope you can help,
I have a Citroen ZX Volcane 1.9i petrol. J reg. With electronic ignition and no cat.
The engine cut out whilst driving the car, and refuses to restart. The car has been in the garage, looked at by the RAC several times, and I have had a mobile mechanic look at it. No one can find the fault. The mobile mechanic put an indicator box on one of the plug leads, and earth, the car started and ran until the engine was turned off, there were sparks jumping across the coil leads to ground, replaced the coil and amplifier, engine will not start, had the ECU checked by a garage, 14 faults registered, sent ECU away to be checked, OK no problem with the ECU. There is no spark at the plugs or fuel into the injectors when the engine is turned over with the ignition on. The rev counter seems to register 2000 revs, when the engine is turned over. It is a good car, and I am getting desperate to find the fault, anybody got any ideas PLEASE.

how can i fix this problem?? Read more

If it's a C16NZ, then it's a Multec single point injection system, not a Motronic.

Check the wiring between the ECU and the DIS unit, and also check the earth wire from the DIS unit. Check also the resistances of the DIS unit, the high tension leads, and the plugs.

I have gone back to regular Shell unleaded from using V-Power and although the car is very slightly less responsive, it is clearly achieving a higher mpg. Your thoughts welcome. Read more

I use Tesco 99 octane in my Legacy spec B. It's my nearest superunleaded supplier and cheaper for 99 octane than the small rural petrol stations are for regular unleaded.
It will run ok on 95 octane but seems livelier on 99. The dealer recommended superunleaded when I bought the car.

Ade607

Does anybody know if it is possible to recode a second hand ECU for a Peugeot 607 2.2HDi, I know when they are new they have to be coded to the car, does anyone know is this can this be redone on a second hand unit or is it one of those things that once done can't be changed?

Can't get one of those uncoded units for the car apparently as they do not work and the car isn't worth enough to spend out £800 plus £100 for the coding on a brand new one.

I have been offered a recon service, are these worth doing or is it a bit of a con . . .

I bet this has been asked before, but I haven't found a definitive answer.
How visible should official No or restricted parkin notices be?
I as as my daughter received a PCN in Salford yesterday.
There were no yellow lines etc., but after searching she found the sign, not facing out onto the road, but looking firmly at a blank wall!
It was not visible from the road - or at least the front wasn't and with the back being grey it was hard to see. Read more

In areas where there is a Controlled Parking Zone, I don't think there have to be any notices at all [except for at the entry and exit from the zone, which could be miles away].

Hi there, I am a newbie here and hope someone can help me or point me in the right direction.
I have an astra 1.6 club 2004 which has 17,000 miles and thought I was buying hassle free motoring for a while... well up untill last week that was the car has been fine but now after doing more than about 45 minutes of driving the car now starts to do a real fine impression of a kangaroo. This was after a combination of round town and motorway driving at about the 45 minute mark there seemed to be what I thought was a lack of fuel as I couldnt keep the car running and the revs just dropped, I just about managed to pull over and the car just died.
It wouldn't start and there were no lights displaying on the dash board.
After about an hour of scratching my head and kicking the tyres I tried to start it and it started just fine as though there was nothing wrong. I decided to carry on with my journey and again after about 40 minutes my car had a personality change and was again a kangaroo. I eventually limped the car home stopping every 30 minutes for a break.
My wife drives the car daily and never had this problem I think mainly because she only ever goes on short trips of about 10 mins.
I have read the thread on 28 march by torribaz and although my case is similar my car does the kangaroo hop after about 45 minutes whether its around town driving or motorway - its not fussy.
I have been advised to book it into a vauxhall dealer but they have told me if the car is not being a kangaroo when I take it into them they probably won't be able to find the fault but will still have to charge me.
Can anyone give me any ideas on what it could be or how to cure it.
Any help will be appreciated.
Andy. Read more

I sometimes despair of Vauxhall ECU's inability to log codes, so it's unlikely that there will be anything useful if it's running when tested.

You should be able to hear the fuel running through the fuel-rail for a couple of seconds at key-on. Note it when it's working and see if it's there when it isn't.

I have a peugeot 306 turbo diesel 1.9 1996 and i get a knocking sound from the front end whenever i brake with force or go over speed bumps i have just spent alot of money getting it through its mot and am at a loss what to do.

does it get to a stage with old cars that noises are compulsory?

used to get similar knocking sound on full lock then the steering colum needed tightening. Read more

Not familiar with this car, but is it suspension mounts?, these are often acentuated by humps, the braking from speed would also put pressure on any suspension mounts.
Then again, you have had an MOT that obviously cost some, and surely they would have looked for any other earners possible, as they do.
If it was jsut braking, then stones traped in diss/covers, loose calipers, badly fitting pads. There are a lot of parts to a front end of a car. Are teh driveshafts in good order, no knocking on turns?
