V-Power or Regular - Yachtmaster
I have gone back to regular Shell unleaded from using V-Power and although the car is very slightly less responsive, it is clearly achieving a higher mpg. Your thoughts welcome.

Perhaps you are subconsciously using the performance more with Vpower as it is more reponsive?

I can't see how the mpg would go up. If the engine management system can utilise the higher octane rating thus giving more power, dropping to a lower octane rating would worsen fuel consumption, everything else being equal. If it can't use the higher octane-rated fuel, there would be no difference. I reckon Shaz has hit the nail on the head.
How much difference are you seeing?

My impression of different fuel in our non-turbo 2003 Forester

Tesco 99 octane - best fuel, much more low down torque
Shell V power - better than normal but not as good as Tesco 99
Shell regular - not much difference to V Power
"the rest"

I now try to use regualr Shell wherever possible - I reckon this is the best value/performance option

I use Tesco 99 octane in my Legacy spec B. It's my nearest superunleaded supplier and cheaper for 99 octane than the small rural petrol stations are for regular unleaded.
It will run ok on 95 octane but seems livelier on 99. The dealer recommended superunleaded when I bought the car.
