Unless something like a coin, stone, or other foreign body has gone and got trapped in the slide mechanism?

My father has admitted that his Mondy (2002, 1.8) is too big and expensive to run for his infrequent use (he has a company van and only uses the Mondy to drive my mother to the supermarket, and to take my grandmother shopping). With the road tax exceeding 200quid, he wants something 'more reasonable to tax, run and insure'.

He has to take my grandmother's wheelchair out occasionally, and has recently got a dog... and is now trying to tell me that he's thinking of a 1.4 "Fiesta or Focus" (as you can tell, he seems to stick with what he knows).

My immediate thought was 'Jazz'. He's not sold on the idea, though... (nor is my Mother, who despite not driving seems to think that Japanese cars are 'expensive to maintain')

Mind you, this is the gent who once decided he was buying a Fusion, until he sat in the thing. He's 6ft3 and not small, so he needs a car with enough space to fit him and everything else in.

Plus it must, apparently, "not cost more than 100quid, or thereabouts" to tax, must be cheap to insure and service.

I offered him my 2004 Almera, which he half-considered, but apart from that, what else would you suggest; style really does not matter (!) Read more

Well done! But beware that you may be now be entering a new phase of family drama, in which the tables turn. Instead of your parents reproaching you for your folly in not following their sage advice, they can now reproach you for the unforeseen consequences of the advice which you have given them.

I hope that your family is one of those where you can all laugh about it together :)

As suggested in the subject line in view of the the fact that this topic ain't going to go away, decided to turn this thread into a volumized one stop shop for all matters about VED Bands.

Usual rules apply - will be locked after 100 replies and volume 4 started.

Inevitably this will include a political slant, any rants will be moderated or chopped.

Any standalone posts will be moved in here.

hard working hard-up young family men with mortgages to pay <<

read: someone living outside their means?

Even if the changes hadn't been reversed, we're still only talking about an increase equivalent to 20 packs of cigs per year, which is not a lot compared to all the other motoring expenses.

But it has been reversed for the time being, so maybe we can avoid this cliched Daily Star tripe and get back to seeing that in the grand scheme of things, the mahoooosive debt the govt is wrapping future generations up in is somewhat more important than a few extra tenners per year

I need a new cam belt + bits for my 56000 mile Audi A4 1.9TDi which will be nearer 60000 miles when I get the job done.

During the warranty period I had services done at a main dealer I found OK (nowhere near London, but convenient when combined with family visits) and failing finding a decent independent - it might be the same main dealer again.

Can any one save me a few bob by recommending someone within say 50 miles of South London. Presumably VW, Seat or Skoda will do as well, as they're all the same?

PS If they're any good I might (just this once) venture north of the river as my visa application is pending and my passport is up to date. Do they still drive on the left north of the River Thames? Read more

The Final Result:

There was no contact from any other independents I had emailed. Are they too busy ? Or are they not too willing to compete on price ?

The non London Audi main dealer wanted £897 inc Vat.

The one independent quoted "about £570 inc. Vat" on the phone and he talked me through a lot of the job issues. His premises and knowledge looked good so I gave it a go.

I just collected the car from him this evening and paid £551 in total.

Happy ? You bet !

My BMW E46 2002 cuts out after a mile after starting, its a total loss of ignition only the battery light comes on,no others, if travelling fast enough when the pedal is pressed it will continue on and the light goes out, some time it will stall completely, if the car is turned off then will restart, sometimes it has to be locked and wait for 5 mins or so the will restart. this is intermittent, and does not leave any fault codes, the car runs sweet as a nut, other than when it dies.
I have changed both the cam sensors, and im going to get the crank sensor tomorrow, if this does not cure it then i need a few suggestions

Coming up to summer holidays and ourselves and countless others will be loading the car full of camping equipment and heading for the sun ;-P.
As a family of four on a two week camping trip, our Zafira will be pretty close to capacity - although I don't think we'd be overloading as I have two dainty(ish) children, don't carry a roofbox, and don't pack the car so full that we can't see out of the rear window. Q - how do you determine when the car's overloaded - it's not easy to weigh a car. Also in the event of an accident or breakdown, would an insurance company refuse to pay out if they suspected a car was loaded over the limit?

Hi,

I had an interesting discussion with a couple of friends recently. Both
are owners of fairly high-performance cars, and they tend to be driven
'enthusiastically.

In and around the conversation, the subject of using speed as a safety measure
came up. The general gist seemed to be: if we see someone driving 'like an idiot'
on the road, there are instances when it is safer to accelerate past the other car,
thereby leaving a safety gap between us and them.

At face value, this seems to have some merit, and I was given some examples of
where this principle had been used. But in every case, I was able to demonstrate
how driving more slowly was the safer option. Simple, really: slower speed=increased
time for reaction, smaller braking distances, less risk.

The guys were unconvinced by this; I'm sticking to my guns and trusting in Mr Newton.

Anyone have any opinions, examples...?

cheers

Perhaps I wasn't very clear - if someone is already tired and losing concentration then I suspect that speeding up will only give a temporary fix for the majority - stopping and having a nap is a better and safer solution... ?

Does anyone know when the Fiat Bravo 1.6 Multijets are likely to appear on the web contract hire lists? No one is listing these yet and it is only Fiat themselves who are doing anything similar at the moment with their I-deal. Read more

LOL wrigley... I wonder if these fast-fit guys rip themselves off outrageously merely from habit when they are doing their own brakes, and then complain about it bitterly at work the next day...
