Perhaps the plastic box is easily dislodged and lost. The OP sounded like that.

Hello, I'm about to buy a non runner Vectra SRI 150 2001. The owner says it stoped working 6 weeks ago, while running. Has been sitting there since than.
In the car's descripition hi says "Think some of the teeth on the cam chain have gone, although believe the chain is still intact". I may be going over there to check the car, I would like some hints in what to look for in a try to diagnose the real problem and a ideia on how much would that cost to be fixed. Thank you all Read more

Hi All

I would like some opinions/comments if possible...
The details.........

My car (a clio) was damaged 1 month ago. The repairs to be done by the garage (my insurance companys choice)
replace the nearside rear quater panel
replace stub axel and bearings

I get a message today telling me its ready for pick up. Then another message telling me to ring them.

They then tell me that my car has been damaged by a car delivery wagon...
The new damage and proposed repairs
new rear bumper
Fill to small dent in rear tailgate
new n/s rear light unit
new front bumper
repair to small scratch to front n/s wing

I am obviously not at all happy about this (particulary the dent to be filled in the tailgate)
But the damage has been done.... (spilt milk etc etc)

Should I contact my insurance again and tell them what has happened and ask for the final repairs top be inspected by an independant assessor??
Any other comments or advice would be gratefully recieved....

Quoth Billpayer:

Incidents are personal not vehicle related.

Intriguing. I insure my car, not me.

(Actually, that's not true, as I insure my car in order that I have DOC on other cars and TPO on my own, so effectively I insure only me. Actually, that's not true either, as adding a girl to the policy reduces the cost by £50 per annum, so I insure a girl on my car too. Goodness knows where she's taken the car at the moment, but that's another issue.)

The 'Car Talk' website, hosted by Tom and Ray Magliozzi* seems to have disappeared. Have anyone else noticed this, and managed to access it somehow?
* I've been following it for some years, ever since someone on HJ's site recommended it.

Stuartli,
Many thanks for your input- I've just tried FireFox, and as you said, it comes up immediately. I normally use IE6, which has been very slow recently.

Any ideas why the off side rear foot well close to the middle of the vehicle should end up with a puddle! I ve extracted over 1 L of clean water and relocated the relevant grommet, but doubt this is a fix Read more

You might be lucky....

If you're getting those effects then it is almost certain that your 'comfort module' is under water. Its on the floor of the passenger footwell. To the side.

I would be taking up the carpet and soundproofing in the passenger footwell and getting it dried out. You may get away with the comfort ecu drying and then behaving itself - you may not.

Follow the links already given to check the pollen filter and the drain holes in the engine compartment.

new comfort ecu is about £250 I think. Make sure you get the right one. There are lots of variants (I presume that they cover all the different options)

Are there any set standards for the amber signal on traffic lights between green and red?

Having had recently to conduct what amounted to an emergency stop on a 50mph limit road to avoid going over the junction on a red (with camera !), it struck me that there should be an exact correlation between the length of the amber and the speed limit, but I am not convinced that this relationship is applied. Fast roads which have traffic lights incorporating sensors under the road before the lights. You should get 3 seconds + about 130 yards.

Its time to think about new tyres for my Focus.

When new I could only get the car with the optional 17" wheels instead of the standard 16". ( As an aside the 17" wheels have a machined rim. This means the lacquer thins where the edges meet the cast finish. This leads to premature corrosion. IMHO don't have machined rims on your alloys. )

Looking about for 205/50 x 17 tyres, gives prices of around £80 each if you avoid the doggey eastern stuff.
However if I look for the 16" equivalant, the price drops by maybe £10 -20.

To my mind, theres actually more rubber etc in the 16" than the 17" so why do they cost more?

Is it numbers produced, type of components, accuracy of moulding etc. or is it that they are priced for "what the market will bear". In other words I can be ripped off more effectively. Read more

I've also discovered that there's a "massive" difference in price depending on where you buy them from.

I needed four 225/45VR17 tyres, and after reading around, settled on the Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric.

First place (mobile fitter) - £387

High street - first price - £152 each. Expletive..."I've had a much lower quote than that". Short period of silence. "We can do them for £390". Slight discount there...

Now I could have managed with 3 tyres (the fourth was still reasonable) - but three Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s were only £20 more than four Goodyears.

I've only managed a few hundred miles on the F1s, but so far they're superb - great roadholding in the dry and not a hint of aquaplaning in the wet. Even hitting a deep puddle on the M53 at some mph didn't even trouble the VSC.

New to the forum and looking for some advise on replacing rear wheel hubs on a zafira (non ABS) doing it for a friend as it has just failed it's MOT & she hasn't the funds to put it to the garage, I am very mechanically minded (I have a Land Rover Discovery which I work on) but I'm unsure about work involved to replace parts.

Many thanks

I have a 1998 Diesel Astra which has started playing up recently.

On start it will take forever to turn and sometimes never turn and the battery will go flat and requires a jump start

OR

The majority of the time, the car will promptly start but within 10 seconds of the car having started the car, it will stopstall and then it's back to trying to turn the car over again. What I noticed is that when the car has started on the first attempt I put my foot on the gas pedal and the engine will not rev it's likely its not even registering in the car that I've put my foot down.

On both scenarios later on in the day, sometimes the problem will occur.

Could anyone point me in the right direction please as to what the problem may be. I have already replaced the spark plugs and the engine mgmnt light does not come on either.

Thank you greatly,

Are there any standards for the surfaces of the various road classifications? Some parts of the A1031 running south from Grimsby are really poor. It must be the worst A road in Britain. I can hardly believe it's classed as an A road. Read more
