Hi there,

My car was recently assessed as a total loss by the insurer after I smashed it up. I agreed an offer from them over the phone and asked if I could take some things from the car, namely tax disc, tax disc holder, mats and private plates. I also said I would be looking to transfer the cherished licence to another car. They said all this would be ok but when I went to the garage to collect the items, the car had already been taken to the salvage company (this was the day after I agreed the offer!)

The insurance company contacted the salvage company who agreed to send the items but all they have sent is the tax disc.

I haven't returned the form they asked me to complete, nor have a sent off the section from the log book to sign the car over to them. I certainly haven't received a pay-out! If I had known I wouldn't get the items back, I don't think I would've accepted their offer.

I've e-mailed them demanding I get the items I was promised but have had no response.

What can I do? I assume I'm still the legal owner or do the insurance company now own the car even though the agreement was verbal?

Any help appreciated?

Thanks,

Kev

Hi

Need to sell our 1998(R) Audi A4 Avant 1.9Tdi(110) Quattro SE with 145K. The online glasses guide (via the vauxhall site) wont admit to a 1.9Tdi quattro before 2002. :-(

I'm trying to decide between putting it on ebay or breaking it. I suspect breaking is better, but I'd like a feel for the rated value. Its slightly tatty (rust starting on the wheel arches) so a below standard value is probably what I want.

thanks

Thanks very much.

tbh I'd be happy to take £1K for it, so I'll try ebay and a couple of audi forums.

If they are same screws as the lidded compartment in SEDAN then i use a small electrical screwdriver (the one with silver button on top) and it works fine. If you have a Screwfix or Wilkinsons they sell the torx screwdivers at very cheap prices.

I heard an item on radio 4 this morning proposing a trial of this.

The guy in favour seemed to be all for it regardless of any arguments against.

Tiff Needell put up some very good points against it.

I'm a cyclist, and to think of cycling the wrong way against traffic on the roads around here terrifies me, but I understand it's quite common on the continent.

I vaguely recall seeing such an arrangement once in Streatham, and we do have a cycle track on the pavement, the wrong way on a one way street, around here, but I'm against sharing pavements with pedestrians - I find it just doesn't work!

Give it time and there will be reports of circus clowns riding (maybe even driving) BACKWARDS past a Gatso to avoid recognition and prosecution.
Mind you, they would hardly be noticed with so many other clowns on the roads... :-)

Hi all,

Just been asked to post on behalf of another colleague who has a Audi A6 Avant.

Does any body have any real world experinces ot the above tyre? I think he mainly means wear reate vs price and grip? Reason he askes is that he has been quoted nearly £200 a tyre and is wondering if a cheaper brand (KUHMO) is more worthwhile?

Any info appreciared Read more

Pilot Sport 2's are hugely expensive and never seem to really do much better than middle of the top end tyres in tyre tests, especially in wet performance.

I'd certainly go for a cheaper tyre but NOT Kumho's et al, becuase PS2's are SO expensive you can buy other high performance, quality tyres for noticeably less.

In this case I'd be after Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric or Bridgestone Potenza RE050A, both of which placed above PS2 in the last Evo tyre test.

I am travelling to France (and possibly into Spain for a day) for the family holiday this year.

Anyone any recommendations on good breakdown cover policies? My Altea is covered by Seat Assistance but this seems to be a case of if you breakdown we will tow you to Seat garage. No replacement cars, onward travel etc.

Have previously used AA 5 star but not sure what the best deals are. Insured with Privilege if that makes any difference.

Having recently suffered a house fire, I now look more at the benefits of a policy rather than just the cost!

I would be looking for a policy that, if needed, would give me a replacement car of similar size to continue the holiday.

Any advice appreciated. Read more

Just back last night from 8 days in ireland. Had AA cover, just under £50. Included roadside assistance, recovery of car to engalnd, onwoard transport and legal cover. I would imagine less for most other cars as an 8 year old Exige would be considered more of a risk than most. Thirteen houndred enjoyable and trouble free miles though.

A little advice please.

Several Saturdays ago there was a question in the Motoring Section about somebody who had been fined for dropping somebody at the kerb near Ealing Broadway station despite having not switched off her engine.

HJ raised the point that there was the strong possibility that the fine was illegal- the person had been 'caught' I believe through the use of CCTV trained on a certain point of the road where there are yellow lines. There used to be a station car park where you could pull in to, but this has now been closed as far as I am aware.

HJ, you mentioned a website that was worth a look to see whether the fine could be challenged, and unfortunately I have been unable to find the paper to find that website.

At the same time (Feb 08) my brother was caught 5 times by the same camera at £50 a time. For quite a period before he dropped his partner outside the station (stopping for no more than about 10 seconds on each occasion) for her to catch the train, and then this new scam was introduced and he was caught every day for one week. Unfortunately the first fine didn't come through until the following week, so he had no idea that there was a problem until he received the first. The following 4 appeared over the next 4 days. He duly paid without thinking that it was worth challenging it, but he may try if it turns out that the council, or whoever they contracted to, was acting illegally.

It sounds as though the fines were only collected over this 1 week period, during which time approx £250k was raised, and it sounds as though there was a huge uproar at the time.

If someone knows the website, please could they pass it on, and also please could we have any further advice on whether it is worth pursuing to get reimbursed.

Many thanks

I think of you every time I drive to KC station to drop somebody off, and raise a virtual toast to another saved £60. Indeed every time I see a red line.
