dauntless

My Renault Megane 2001 1.6 Fidgi Auto will often fail to start. On turning the key it behaves exactly as if I am trying to start it in gear, even though it is in PARK, namely, nothing happens. I then switch off and try again hoping that the system will reboot to allow the car to start. I am allowing the full startup sequence of coloured lights to go through its routine and settle down before turning the key again .This often works within three attempts, but yesterday I was stranded for about ten minutes with many reboot attempts before it thankfully started. Naturally I'm worried that it will refuse to start permanently.
I would be glad to know if this is a common fault and of any suggestons about how it may be overcome.

hi i am an mot tester who has tested the 1.25 zetec fiesta today.i have come across an unusual emmisions fault.whilst ideling the car runs at around .30 co and 240 hydro carbons which is just outside limits.however at 3000 rpm the cars co level rises to a crazy 12 .08 and hydro carbons 2500 way over limits. the car obviously smokes like mad at this point with the over fueling.i then road tested the vehicle as it belongs to an elderly lady to see if it made any differnce.after an initial burst of heavy smoke the cars smoke level subsided. on my return to the garage however the second emmision test was exactly the same as the first. there are no fault codes shown on my eobd scanner.i am hoping someone has come across this fault.many thanks steve Read more

Drove my wife's Micra this morning for the first time in a few weeks.

I think the brake pedal feels soft and has too much travel.

Any thoughts before I let the dealer loose on it?

Thanks. Read more

Leaking wheel cylinder?

Common enough on micras.

So there I am walking back to work at lunch time when I round the corner and there coming towards me was this old boy driving a Gold Rover 75!!
He stops diagonally across the pavement totally blocking everyone. He slowly gets out, walks round to the rear door to let some even older wobbly lady out and help her hobble to the bank (he'd stopped right outside it and probably would have driven into it had the dorrway been wide enough!). So I said quite loudly "that's right mate, keep death of the roads, drive on the pavement!".
He retorts with something along the lines that the old dear he's helping can hardly walk and that one day I'd be old too. My reply was "If I get to live that long with idiots like you around!"
Obviously her dash to the bank was of far more importance that him potentially mowing down a pedestrian or a small child running round the corner.

I was so angry and I don't care how old or infirm someone is, no-one has the right to drive onto the pavement causing the mayhem he did. It must have contravened loads of highway code rules and a few road traffic acts but was there a copper or a warden around to see it? Was there hell.

If the bank tellers are as inept as the muppets who work at the local McD's, then maybe this is a blessing in disguise?
"Terribly sorry, Mr Kevin, this is the bank manager - did you really write a cheque for forty seven thousand million pounds at the drive-thru bank?"

Have you ever made let 'ethics' influence a car-buying decision ? (and I'm not really thinking about an obvious one, like buying British-built ). I'm asking this because when I saw the Chinese 'bodyguards' to the olympic flame, it made me think I wouldn't buy a Honda Jazz/Fit made in China. This reminded me of a old Coronation Street episode where Ken Barlow bought a VW Beetle and Albert Tatlock wouldn't get in it because it was 'Jerry' built. Read more

I'm certainly having second thoughts about automatically replacing Mrs BP's Jazz with a new Jaz as it will be built in China.

OK, Chinese products can't be avoided in all cases, and there's so little money in most consumer goods now that even China is becoming an expensive place to make things.

However, all things being more or less equal, it would be great to buy a vehicle which had at least been assembled in the UK, and we'll be looking seriously at Nissan Note.

Hi everyone, I need a car and was considering a Jazz 1.4DSI SE.
I travel 30 miles to work (only about 2 miles non motorway driving) and back five days a week. Then just drive around town and also have to park on the street.
I would appreciate any advice etc on this car in these conditions,
Thanks.

The Jazz is a nice car but it's size is somewhat overrated the space in
the front seats is dire compared with the Colt Fiesta and new Corsa.

We have a Jazz and a Colt - can't say I've noticed any difference in front seat space. The sliding rear seat in Colt is quite but obvioulsy takes away some of the boot space. Jazz's "magic" seats are very neat.
at 6k the Colt still delivers great value

Those deals seem to have gone, at least for the moment. Entry level 3dr CZ1 is being advertised back at £7500, which is far too dear for what it is.

I have an SLK 280 purchased new Nov 2006 that has a defective COMAND system screen. In the event that MB will not repair under warranty (£3,000 quoted!) does anyone know of a specialist who can repair COMAND systems.

The only problem is the screen itself - everything else works perfectly

Bill,
Its a classic MB response - you damaged it so it will not be covered under MB warranty - currently suing the original garage that supplied the vehicle.

The company you suggested cannot repair my unit - any other ideas?

currently running a 54 plate siemens 2.0HDi and very happy with it having a cable clutch and a solid flywheel. Seems bulletproof and less likely to cause problems.

I'd be interested to know what the issues, if any, with the 1.6HDi? I realise it does more mpg, but is it as good a bet for hanging on to a car past 130k, perhaps.

Does it have particulate filter or dual mass flywheel on the Berlingo version of this engine?

Any particular reliability issues?

Hello all. Im in need of some help.

Basically, my sister had a small accident when reversing off our driveway in July 2007. She was reversing off our driveway and at the same time a woman was reversing up our street on the wrong side of the road. They both didn't see each other and the rear corner of both cars made contact. My sister stupidly didn't come inside to tell anyone and didn't take any pictures, just took insurance details and the woman drove off. My sisters wheels were still on the footpath and just the back end was 'hanging' over the road. So you can tell how far on the wrong side of the road this woman was reversing.
My sisters insurance company Privilege have been dealing with this appallingly. Its taken them nearly a year to get anywhere at all. Privilege said it offered a 50/50 claim as both cars were reversing, the womans insurance company rejected this offer and refused to take any blame. Now we have had a letter from Privilege saying:

" Please note that the other side have rejected our offer of settlement on a 50/50 basis.

Unfortunately, given that their insured was on the main road and you were coming off your driveway, we would not have a strong enough case to justify pursuing this matter further through the courts.

I regret to advise you that will not be able to effect a recovery for you in this instance and propose to close your file.

I will however leave it open for 14 days for any further comments you may wish to add."

So basically the other side refuse and Privilege chicken out and give in.
The other woman had to provide drawings of the event. She put my sisters car in the middle of the road and her reversing out of the street on the correct side of the road. How convenient, shame its a blatant lie.
I have done a quick sketch to explain the incident a little better.

Where the 3 cars are parked she claimed it was a 'turning circle' that was full. Its a parking space to fit 3 cars, stupid woman. She claimed she could not do a turn in the road and had to reverse out. I'm sorry but she was in a small fiesta. A Frontera can turn round in the road even if those spaces are full. You'd have to be driving a long car to not be able to turn around in our street.

So we're stuck. Privilege want to close our file. She is lieing through her teeth but we don't have any pictures to prove our side. The damage is going to cost about £700 to fix. My sister's car is an R reg Rover 416 that we bought cheap off a family member for £600. This car has been dealer serviced since new upto 75k miles and now its on 91k and its in great condition.
To top it all off, the womans son comes down our street all the time in his fancy BMW that must have bought for him (he looks about 17). He flies down the street, picks up his girlfriend, then reverses out of the street as fast as he can on the wrong side of the road just like she did. ARGHHH Can you see why this is annoying me so much.

Is there anything at all we can do? Would the Financial Ombudsman be able to help? Has anyone used or known of people using a company like INSCO and are they worth trying?
Any helpful tips or guidance would be much appreciated.

I often reverse out of my drive (into a cul-de-sac) as your sister did. I always aware that I'll be the fall-guy if any collision occurs with another vehicle - hence I'm ultra-ultra careful. Sorry to say it but it looks like your sister's fault. The other party does sound rather dozy, I can understand your frustration about it - especially with the 'incorrect' accident report she filed.

I've seen the new shape in the Auot Express mag, it just looks like the C2 & the Aygo, another cloned partnership to me, where as the original Ka was totally unique!
