My Peugeot 406 has lost some power, there is air leaking from a pipe on bottom of the engine that leads to the turbo. any suggestions if this could cause loss of power and how easy it is to replace? cheers

My Passatt TDI(100bhp) Drives extremely well. For the past two years I have had a loud and regular 'wump' comming from the engine it is only apparent when the engine is at idle. If I remove a vacum pipe (situated drivers side at the front) the noise stops. The noise is not present until the car has been running for some time and not at all before the engine has warmed up fully. When I first noticed it I spoke to a mechanic who said it was a valve of some sort and not to worry, he also stated that he had replaced a 'valve' on another VW only for the noise to return six months later. AS a result Ihave been using the car happily. It has been regularly serviced etc. I now want to replace the car but assume a loud 'wumping' would not help a sale. The noise seems louder on the passenger side. It is quite loud although only barely noticable from inside. Any ideas what can be causing it and how to remedy the fault will be appreciated. R/Rose. This noise turned out to be a small electrical switch situated at the rear of the engine. Apparently this controls the vacum that inturn works/ helps the turbo?? sorry not verty technical but at least its something and all is now well. R/Rose
I was hit from behind last year and my car was written off. It's been established it wasn't my fault and I'v pretty much replaced my car like for like.
I've had an offer from the soliciter for personal injury, but never having been in this situation I'm looking for a little advice.
I've been checked out mediacally and after 6 weeks off work I've been judged to have whiplash and soft tissue damage to wrist and back which has been suggested will clear up within a year.
Never had any trouble with either before and both are still sore. Physio has been suggested.
Personal injury offer is for £3500 and £400 for physio, but if accepted the third party accepts no more liability for further health problems.
Not sure if the monetary offer is good or bad (it's less than the hire car charges - the bandits), but my main concern are any long term back or wrist problems.
I've heard nightmare stories of ongoing health issues long after the money has been spent. I've also heard of people getting a lot more payout too.
Any ideas?

But not in a money grabbing way! I just don't want to end up getting stitched up and thought there was some kind of average payout.
It's more a case of they have been dodgy from day 1 and my naivety has landed me in this situation.
If it wasn't against the rules I would name and shame, and warn others of the much bigger payouts that have been made on my claim, but not to me!
A couple of weeks ago my house was broken into. Along with a laptop and other stuff they also took the car.
Called the police at 6am on friday morning, was told that the police would be round that day.
Waited in until 5pm then received a call to say that the police would come round on saturday morning, between 9 and 12. Get a call on saturday afternoon to say that they hadn't been able to make the appointment. That much I knew...
They finally arrive at 11 am on sunday morning and take all the details and arrange to send round a scene of crime officer who comes round on monday evening, saying that it was pointless taking prints so long after the event!
I then get a call on tuesday asking me to confirm the car's registration so that the details can go on the national stolen car database, fully 5 days after it was nicked.

some city forces (London certainly) have support services that take up the admin slack for crimes, so the original police officer will deal to start with, then pass to another officer on a support unit to carry on, (so that the original one can carry on with response policing). Eventually a civilian admin unit will take over..and those support staff can acces the computerised crime reporting system and may well have a degree of ownership of that crime (so could comment on what's happening). The support services are more likely to work some form of office hours and therefore be more available.
I'm aware that many county and therefore smaller Forces do not have such back up systems for patrolling officers, so the individual officer has to fit the enqs in as and when they can. As they're on shift work, will take leave, go on courses, be required to work in various other places etc, they might not be available to be contacted for quite some time...and no one else will know where they are in the investigation.
For example, with no abstractions at all, a common shift pattern has 4 days off, 7 days nights and then 3 days off, so in a 5 week period that officer will be uncontactable for 2 weeks in one go...unless you want to discuss it in the middle of the night of course, which most people don't...:-)
I have replaced the rear shoes on vehicle and the handbrake travel is excessive. Have looked everywhere and there appears to be no adjustment. How do you adjust the slack in the cable? Read more
Don't worry about this one, I have MIG welded the auto adjuster cam in the right place and it works perfectly.
Thanks anyway
Hey,
me and 3 friends are planning on driving around Europe next Summer for about 2 months and need a car to do so. At the moment we're just browsing, looking at whatever hits our budget (about a grand each, so four grand in total) but any 'professional' input would be absolutely fantastic as none of us are honestly 100% into cars.
I've been recommended to look at either a Citroen (as they're very easy to fix no matter where you end up) or something like a Mitsubishi (as the parts come cheap), but I honestly don't have a clue as to the best deal. Before we set off I should've been able to coerce my dad into helping me understand how to fix basic problems with engines, but nothing major.
Our trip will likely span around 8,000 miles over a 2 month period, travelling through most of Europe. There has to be enough room for 4 people (3 guys, 1 girl) to travel relatively comfortably with enough room for at least 2 tents, 4 rucksacks of kit, and a jerry can.
Basically, we're looking for the most spacious, fuel efficient, reliable car that we can find for under £4,000, that'll be relatively easy (and cheap!) to fix /if/ it breaks.
If any of you have any ideas then please, please let us know! It will be very much appreciated!
Cheers in advance,

My wife has just reminded me of the time the Ren 18 broke down one evening in Eastern France (somewhere near Saarlouis) it just stalled on a hairpin bend and I couldn't restart it. A fire engine and van stopped to help - hitched the caravan on the back of the fire engine, the car on the back of another "fire van" and towed us to a local garage - kids got a ride in the fire engine. Since it was about 6 or 7 pm and the local garage said he would fix it (with a lot of advice from the firemen - sappeurs pompiers) - I walked down the road and bought a box of beer which we all consumed while the mechanic cleaned the carb (something to do with oil from a breather pipe blocking the carb). I said I wouldn't drink 'cos I had to drive to a campsite but the sappeurs set up the caravan in the garage yard and said we should stay there - so down went the beer and we stayed the night there. When I asked for the bill, the mechanic said that he didn't want any money because we had paid in beer and he (and us and the kids and the sappeurs had had a good evening)
Sorry, long irrelevant post, but brings back happy memories - mods- delete if appropriate Phil
I read in a daily paper today that Shell fuel station deliverys may be disrupted due to a problem over tanker drivers pay. Talks were continuing but the artical was pretty downcast (shortages etc.) Does anyone know the current state of negotiations? Read more
With other outlets available (I use Sainsburys) it should hit the fraudsters (see other posts relating to franchised outlets) harder than the motorists!
Panda 4x4 is nearly out of warranty and needs new rear discs and pads.
On the internet, inc. VAT and p+p, original Fiat parts £64, pattern parts from EBC, who I believe to be reputable, £44.
Which would you go for ? Read more
I had a poor experience with EBC pads on a Punto in terms of both fit and braking performance. Took them off and put on ATE pads and discs (about £45 all in from Eurocarparts). They perform well. The Punto calipers have ATE stamped on them so
ATE pads may well be OE.
A collegue has a 1.6 Focus ghia. Recently the front suspension has become quite noisy. To me it sounds like rubber bushes. It comes from both sides. Is there a common problem, if so how do you fix it? Thanks in anticipation of any help. Read more
Thanks Steve.

Split HDi boost hoses are not uncommon and do cause a loss of power.
None are easy; some are a right pig to access - and they're all too expensive. Don't leave it or it'll set fault-codes.
