Hi People,
I?ve have a 1990 Peugeot J5 based camper van, it?s based on the 2.5 turbo diesel chassis.
It went in for a cambelt change last week (thought I would let someone with a 4 post ramp do that one!) and they reported that the brake servo was defective.
Now I?ve done the pump test on the brake pedal and it does move down a few inches on startup (so to me it?s not a servo issue). However when the engine is running and I put my finger over the pipe coming from the vacuum pump it has very little ?suck? ? even if I rev it.
I think it?s probably a poor vacuum pump, however can anybody tell me if the pump should actually produce a good vacuum, on mine it?s certainly less than I would expect from a petrol car off the manifold? I don?t want to spend £150 on a new pump if the old one is working as intended.
Many thanks,
Dom

These tires are airless and are scheduled to be out on the market very soon.
The bad news for law enforcement is that spike strips will not work on these tires.
This is what great R&D will do, and just think of the impact on existing technology:
a... no more air valves
a... no more air compressors at gas stations
a... no more repair kits

These are actual pictures taken in the South Carolina plant of Michelin. It will be awhile before they are available to the automotive industry.

What ever happened to the coloured rubber tyres that were in the motoring press a few years back ?
IIRC there were different colours of rubber and even a union jack pattern one available.
Before I go to France later this year I would like to get a spare indicator bulb for the rear indicator. It's not a normal 21w bulb, last time I looked it was akin to a miniature H1 headlamp bulb. I remember asking for a spare when I bought the car but was told it was a special long-life bulb and unlikely to need replacement. And it was about £7, so I declined. I doubt such a tale would impress the gendarmes if stopped. Anyone know what sort of bulb it is? Online car part suppliers are no help; they all have it listed as a PY21W, which it definitey isn't. If I don't get anywhere, I'll have to go to the dealer and spend more than I need to. Read more

I am imposing on those knowledgeable about long-in-the-tooth modern Fords because mine is still good. But lately I have noticed in both town and country an occasional tremor on light throttle, short of shunting but the same sort of thing.
That apart, for some time past, every now and then, the car has been reluctant to accelerate in third gear on a light partial throttle opening, requiring a good stab at the pedal to get any action. Then it reacts like a roughly-tuned car with a twin-choke Weber carburettor, suddenly turning on a lot more power, noise and no doubt thirst. Yesterday on mimser-infested A roads it did this a few times. At higher speeds or with a heavier foot it goes as usual, pretty well considering, but I'm afraid even that won't last without some attention.
When young I wouldn't have noticed because my foot tended to be too far down anyway. Now I recognise it as a fault which seems to be getting worse. It's a 93/94 German-built 90hp 16v Zetec or semi Zetec by the way.
Sorry to bother people, but does anything obvious suggest itself to experts? Read more
OK, will try.
Car behaved impeccably in town this evening by the way. But it usually does.
Hi all,
First post for me! I have an interesting problem with my Passat.
It's a 53 plate 1.9 TDI S 128 (uprated to 168).
Been working fine for the best part of a year, been serviced and the lot.
Recently its not being starting on occasions. Having called the AA out a couple of times when it broke down, on both times they thought it would be a fuel problem such as a fuel lifting pump or the like.
The car has been to a vw dealer, they found nothing as its intermittant.
It then went to a non dealer who replaced a fuel pump priming circuit, as this was one error code brought back from the AA.
This did not fix the problem.
It then went to another garage. After a week they found no problems with the fuel system. After the fault reared its ugly head they took the starter motor out, which was shocking they said, and replaced with a new one.
All weel for a week.
Today, it decided to do it again, but it did start after a few chaking motions, i.e. the engine tried to turn over but didn't.
I'm at a loss and so are other people with this, has anyone seen this before?
ALSO with this problem, I get an ABS + ESP light coming on for a few seconds now and again and going off, doesn't affect driving, but did for some reason turn the radio off and back on again, I dread to think what this could be - maybe electrical or wiring or just a faulty ABS sensor?
Thanks a lot if you have any ideas before it next goes into a garage for yet more cash going on it.

Hi no help i am afraid, just wondered if you have fixed your problem as I have the same one and am struggling. regards belle
Hey all,
About 5 or 6 weeks ago I posted regarding a misfire that had developed and was solved at the time by replacing the HT leads to cyclinders 1 & 2. They both had orange rust like residue around the base on the outside and the wells in which the plugs sit had similar, as if there had at some point been a half inch of water in there. It had been fine since then and I had been checking for signs of a leak when the car was cold but saw nothing and can only assume that water got in at some point when the bonnet was open during a service/MOT perhaps (I'm rarely under there myself...!)
However this week just gone I've got a new misfire and began by getting another set of leads as the replacements had been cheapo ones. Didn't cure it, so got to changing the spark plug in cylinder 1, where the residue had been most prominent, took it for a two mile run and it didn't miss a beat. However took the car out this evening and misfire is back with a vengeance. So have now replaced all spark plugs, as well as leads...
After all that my question is, what are the chances of this being the coil pack going, just by coincidence, over the possibility of some other problem having developed due to the rusty patches? I'm thinking a second hand coil pack off eBay as the first port of call but after that I'd be lost. One final point I want to make is that, being as it's Sunday, I got the plugs from Halfords, and the ones they've supplied me have a longer threaded bit than the Champion ones I've taken out (which, by the way, all looked quite healthy) which obviously means they're sitting deeper in their holes, I take it this is acceptable...? Any ideas much appreciated, I'm currently keeping my AA card very close to my chest...! Read more
I agree i did around 35k miles in each of the mk 1 and mk2 and both purchased at auction with 100k on clock and never had any real problems. Both never failed a MOT in the 5yrs of ownership of the 2.Had to replace lower arms and various bushes, but is that not the same on any car.Have owned the mk3 for 5yrs now 55k on clock at purchase now 126k faied 1 MOT last year on a rear brake pipe apart from a new inlet manifold and a failed thermostat, to my knowledge still on original sub frame bushes and front arms. Not showing any signs of rust on doors engine is strong sounds sweet .just getting concerned about price of road tax next year so a change might be on the way later this year.
Have £12K and want to try and bag a new shape Range Rover for around £10K at auction. Leaving £2K to run it for a year/repairs on purchase......always the pessimist.
I have 2 questions:
1) I have not got a brochure for an early car. Are there any essential options I should make sure the car has? I guess LPG may be desirable!
2) I am not in a hurry and am happy with my existing car -well it goes and stops me getting wet going from A to B.
For the sake of 6 months, would it be a good idea to buy one cNov-Dec this year as they are an unpopular vehicle what with VED and fuel price rises and therefore may fall significantly in price in that time?
HJ's most recent auction report suggests that there might be a price correction coming as lots of cars will have to be released at lower values soon and this is my worry.
Thanks

Wait until November; the world will seem a very different place by then and thirsty motors like that will not be in demand by dealers with moribund forecourts.
In the meantime; cultivate the sales side of a few L-R dealers and you may find a peach of a trade-out being offered.
any help on pulley marks i cant find many thankx

A manual or timing-belt book is an absolute necessity to do a critically-important job like a cambelt - especially on one of those. There's a lot more to it than just aligning the marks.
There is no margin for trial-and-error - it's either done 100% right or.....
Hi,
Just wondering if anyone can help, my pug won't start even though the engine turns over and everything electrical seems fine.
I opened the top of the injector unit, where while running you can see fuel going into the intake. While a friend fired the engine I could see no fuel going down :(
Although this might not be fuel pump I am not ruling it out!
Also I have checked the fuses and they all seem fine.
If anyone has any advice I will be very grateful.
-meanwhile I am going to replace the fuel filter and check the 'out' hose of the fuel pump to see if any fuel is passing while the engine is being started.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
just an update as I have now fitted the new Crank Sensor I got. The pug fired up first time and looks to be up and running again! :)
I am very happy and would like to thank all who contributed to getting this sorted!!
THANKS GUYS

Many thanks for the suggestion, I think my dad may have one so I'll try this first. I popped into a Peugeot dealer and asked about the cost of a new pump, they quoted just a shade over £300! ...so I want to be 100% sure.
