Ford Focus 1.6TDCi 5 door hatchback.
There is a strange noise that comes from somewhere in the engine area after the car is stopped and the centrally locking activated. The noise occurs immediately after the second click of the remote hand fob (i.e. double locking activated). The noise sounds like a deepish hummmm and lasts for about 2 seconds. It only occurs if I have had the air con on and have switched it off the air con about 30 seconds before stopping the engine and then exiting and engaging the double locking.

Does anyone know what is causing the noise and is there a problem developing ?
Thanks. Read more

The problem has only just began to occur on the last 2 occasions I've had the air con on and then activated the c.locking. I've not tried not locking the car to see if the problem occurs.

My 2001 Nissan QX 3.0 is not blowing cold air through the air con system, maybe time for a service, is anybody able to recommend an aircon specialist around the Surbiton or Esher, Surrey area?

Thanks in anticipation. Read more

Many thanks for your help. Armitage Shanks- went to Raeburn Autos, they regassed it for £50 plus VAT, beautifully cold again.

Reading about ESP yesterday and wondered what people's experiences are of when the light comes on and how the car responds.

Is it an advantage to have ESP?

I haven't spotted it, but felt the ESP working twice in 3300 miles.

Hi

I've got a newish job and have opted out, after finally doing the math it looks like I can spend about 12k (maybe slightly more if pushed) on a car, I've looked at a lot of different models but the Accord Exec diesel 2006 looks like the best bet in terms of value for money and the kit you can get (very important!), also the reliability is good!, I was just wondering is there anything else that I may not be considering that may be better for that sort of money?, I've had a look at cars like the Laguna but its the reliability that makes me stay away, other then that I cant think of any more cars, ideas will be appreciated as I'll probably buy one this week, want to make sure I make the best decision! :)

The company has a 4 - 5 year old car rule so I really cannot get anything pre 2006.

Thanks for reading, these forums are really useful! Read more

yep I did do the calculations, the emissions for the accord petrol are fairly high, and I'm expecting to do about 25k miles, maybe even a bit higher, + resale values at higher mileages for diesel engines should be better as well I imagine.

PS been driving a smart car for 6 months, the Accord feels massive, going to have to relearn driving :(

I tried to find the original thread regarding: www.gendan.co.uk/ and their products.

Just wanted tp pass on a big 'THANK YOU' to the person that kindly took the time to put this companies details on line for the rest of us to see.

You (and Gendan) saved me a lot of time, fiddling about but more importantly - money.

My car is a Vauxhall 2003 Astra estate 1.6 (Z16XE engine) bi fuel (LPG/Petrol).

I went with the Vauxcheck, Enginecheck and ELM327 USB interface and it pulled up 4 codes all relating to the EGR valve having (once more) failed.

It also gave me a 'pending' fault of the coil pack being on its way out.

As Vauxhall themselves had recently replaced the EGR valve I took it back to them.

Because I had the diag codes in my grubby paws, I was able to tell them exactly what was wrong with my vehicle. Their own (much more expensive) diag equipment verified exactly what the Gandan product (plus a confirmation the coil pack was on its way out) had already given me.

Repaired free of charge and by main dealership with no arguments!

Morning Oilrag,

Pleased that you got on well with it too.

Yes you are right in the PC based one being more advanced. It has a lot more ability to see 'inside' of your engine. It can see sensors, running temp's and a whole host of other items. Enough to keep and give to an inexperienced and novice mechanic (such as myself!) items to be wondering, pondering, working out and worrying over! LOL!

I used the PC based one because of what else you are able to see with the Engine and Vauxcheck software.

COILLPACK: I removed, cleaned all connections, cleaned earths and reassembled the coil pack over the weekend - no faults are now being reported :))) So it looks like (please!) that it was a dry or bad connection somewhere.

My odometer and trip counter have both stopped counting miles. The speedometer, however, is still working perfectly.

Is this fixable? Or do I need to replace all of the dash? Read more

is the dash readout digital or mechanical?

Being new to this forum and not being a regular contributor I really do find it fascinating, the vast range of motoring subjects that are discussed. If you need to know anything motoring related, this is the place to be ! I feel the odd one out, my motoring life has thus far been very uneventful compared to a lot of contributors to this forum. I have always been more than happy with my make of vehicle, to the extent that I have for the last 44yrs always purchased the same brand ! This may not suite everyone but the plus side is that I have always been very well treated by my local main agent and in those 44yrs have never experienced any mechanical problems. I exchange every 15 months and my main agent even reminds me a few weeks before hand that "its that time of year again". This may not be to everyones taste but I have found it to be most satisfactory, no mechanical worries, peace of mind motoring. Having been retired for four years now and my milage reduced from approx 30 thousand to now about 8 thousand I feel happy to extend change over period to two years now. At least I still do not have the trauma of M.O.T. to worry about.Although I may not be able to contribute much to the forum I would like to express my sincere thanks to all forum members for giving so much enjoyment to one who sits on the side lines.! Thank you all so much. Read more

quiet man,

Don't be so tough on your daughter! I see nothing wrong with living in Washington. Lovely State, open quiet roads and a beautiful two day drive down through Oregon (the Cascades are a stunning mountain range) to northern California. The downside, as you know, is a certain dampness, but when summer arrives it normally stays for a few months! Enjoy your visit.

Can anyone tell me what the price of fuel was in september 2006 ?

thanks

In the last fuel shortage times the profiteering stations were driven out of business because people remembered they were being greedy swine. BP does it on principle. When the nearest esso was out of fuel a few months ago it whacked up prices by 10p per litre. Luckily they made a mistake with what fuel I bought when they did it so I got my revenge. Had they not behaved like that I would have pointed out the mistake straight away.

Esso was out again tonight. Stupid people that worked there didn't have the brain to put out signs saying all the pumps were empty so people were driving in and out again for no reason.

We're going to buy one tomorrow...pre-owned 4000 miles on the clock and for about £18k - worried about the fuel pump issues, should i be? Any info greatly appreciated.

just became a father for the 1st time, we have a 1 year old 2.0tdi sport jetta....awesome....my wife wants something similar but with a bit more space...seemed like the natural choice.

We test drove the touran, boring...honda crv...too small a boot....c4 grand....not well built...the audi would be nice ....too much to insure and not as roomy....thanks for the advice but the passat seems like a good choice...and i'm glad i don't have to worry about the fuel pump.

Is there much involved in replacement and do I need any special tools?

It's just a suggestion but, before you rush out and spend lots of money on a new power steering pump, you might consider thoroughly cleaning up the whole area to make completely certain that it's actually the pump that's leaking.

The reason I mention this is that on my Mondeo MkII, which probably uses a similar pump, it has leaked out of the pipes on the bottom of the fluid reservoir for years, due to the poor quality of the hose clips used in production. The cure for this is to either cut the original clips off and replace them with better quality ones, or to, simply, keep an eye on the fluid level and top-up when required. I've done the latter. It certainly does look like the power steering pump is leaking on my car, but it isn't!

Worth a check in your own case, I would think. Could be much cheaper to sort-out than the cost of a new pump.
