98 2.1td Over reving old diesel, what damage? - gsb
Further to my post yesterday, what if any, potential damage apart from belt can be caused by holding my 192m 2.1td foot to the floor for 2-3 seconds. The, what sounded like valve bounce was not music to my ears.

Thanks

I have no worries about holding our Punto 1.9D on the limiter. Every year pre MOT, it spends about 10 minutes held actually at the limiter ( just under 5,000 revs) by me in an attempt to get the smoke down.

When it gets the MOT rev up, no concerns, that`s *much* milder.

To be honest, I think I was much too sensitive about `being held at the limiter` in earlier years. Cambelt and associated kit being in good condition, I think it does them no harm and likely to be beneficial in cleaning the internals.

I have no concerns driving the Punto on the limiter for a few miles in third on the M1.

Just an opinion, don`t let me influence you ;)

Regards

I too believe that no damage will be caused, unless the engine is neglected and or worn out, with rattling bearings or maybe a cambelt that should have been changed and hasn't been.

IIRC for many years, and maybe still there, in MOT testing stations there was a warning notice to owners of diesel cars notifying them of the severity of the diesel engine smoke test, and to be sure that the cam belt wasn't on its last legs.

If you think about it diesels have always, until recent years had to be thrashed right up to the limiter to get any sort of performance out of them, this low speed turbocharged power is a relatively new thing in car diesels, though has been the case for more years in commercials of course.

My first diesel cars without turbo's had to be caned mercilessly once warm to get any sort of progress.

99% of white vans for example (think builders transits) are thrashed to the absolute limilts, but seldom blow up. Couldn't you just cringe sometimes at the roaring sound as a tranny van goes blasting away from the lights.

Thats why the rev limiter is fitted to the fuel pump, if it can't stand a couple of minutes on the limiter at the MOT station, then its had it IMO.
