I have been to a Mini Garage looking for a One D.

I found out from the sales person that the Mini One D that I liked very much previously belonged to a driving instructor. It is 06 reg and has done 65k miles (averaging more than 30k a year). The sales person assured me that the car is in pristine condition with any worn parts all replaced and they will be giving the 12 months warranty and MOT cover under the MINI cherished scheme.

My question is that should I stay away from this car seeing that it must be treated harshly by the learner drivers (Or is this a misconception)?

If I were to buy this car, is there anything that I must ensure that the garage has to replace, for example the clutch, or any other mechanical parts that you recommend me to pay attention to?

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanking you in advance.

Use your eyes and ears to see if it's the car for you, judge each car on it's own merits . A good test drive and inspection can tell you what you need to know. Don't rely on the garage or salesman's word. With the engine idling can you hear the bearings in the gearbox chatter and then go quiet when you dip the clutch ?. The synchrmesh on the box will be the first to go, is the change obstructive when downshifting at speed?.Can you hear a faint whining noise from worn diff bearings when on the move?. Any judder/grabbing from the clutch ?. Rock the steering does it feel taught with no play or knocking noises ? (compare with a newer mini) . Does the gearstick feel positive or is it loose and unprecise ? Any knocking noises from suspension when driving around town over speed bumps?. Is the paintwork on the front bumper/bonnet leading edge chipped badly?. Have you checked every inch of the bumpers for splits cracks and the bodywork for repairs?. Has it got an impeccable service record with anything needing doing done straight away or was the previous owner a penny pincher ?. Cheapo banana skin tyres and back street garage servicing aren't a good sign on a car like this.
Check drivers seat for sagging and wear on the bolster region. I'm sure there is more checks to do but if it all checks out ok it could be a good buy but only at the right price, ie less than book retail for mileage

If I don't have my first two-yearly brake fluid change done will that invalidate the rest of my warranty? Read more

Every time you brake 4 pistons pop out of their resting place inside the calliper body and apply the brake pads to the disks retarding speed, as we know the pads touching the disks causes dust. Sometimes in our fine country it rains, the tyres pick up the rain complete with dirt and other contaminents from the road and sprays it under the wheel arches, all over the disks, callipers, etc

Everytime the brakes are released the pistons return home inside the calliper body, to prevent rain, dirt and brake dust entering the callipers there is an outer dust seal which stops 99.999% of what you don't want going into the hydraulic brake system (dirt ,dust, water etc) but life being life 0.001% does actually bypass the outer dust seal and reside between the outer dust seal and the hydraulic seal between the calliper and the piston. Life being life means the piston seal is only 99.999% efficient and allows a small amount of fluid out and the dust, dirt and water in. After many 1000s of applications of the brakes the fluid is dirty and water contaminated and need changing.

The master cylinder reservoir cap has a small hole in the top to prevent the reservoir "vacuuming", this hole allows tiny amounts of moisture into the reservoir contaminating the fluid and it needs changing.

Brakes, its only when you really need them do you find out exactly how good they are.

(The above discription is for a typical modern braking system, some systems may differ)

Unfortunately the only way to reset the service due message is to have it reset at a Fiat main dealers.
They are the only people with the correct reset tool/computer. I have a Stilo with the same engine, and have had the car serviced at an independant garage, but they could not reset the service due message.

Just have to ignore it, or be ripped off at a main Fiat dealer and have your car serviced there........sometimes ignorance is bliss!!

To reset the brake pad warning, turn on the ignition for 5 mins (engine NOT running)and the system should reset. Both front and rear sensors must be ok.hth

I have had this 2001 S60 since August 06 and love the car........until about 4 weeks ago, developed a noise ( sort of rattle/banging ) from front near side when going over bumps/uneven roads.
My local engineer has had the car on the ramps and could find nothing wrong with suspension . Then the local MOT garage also had a look at it and could find nothing wrong and said it would pass its MOT no problem.
Took it back to my local man who then found some play in front n/side lower ball joint which he replaced yesterday.
Result ; no difference, in fact if anything noise is worse !!!!
If anyone has any bright ideas as to cause of this I would be very grateful!
Thanks, Johnno

Don't know whether you've solved this problem or whether what I suggest is useful. I've got a 2000 S80 and have a similar problem with a knocking at low speeds. I'm not sure if the make up of the S60 is similar to the S80 but have a look at the attached link.

Hi everybody,

Could somebody suggest the best cars for under £2000 that I can buy for my wife's Birthday. She definitely doesn't want anything flash, or big or even fast (no women driver remarks please...I am within hitting distance!!)

I thought about a Ford Ka but a mechanic I know kind of put me off the idea. As long as it is reliable, not too thirsty and looks ok I am sure she will be happy.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
Thanks,

Bought the wife an Astra G recently, (1.4 ls 16v on a W plate.) and she loves it to bits.

Came with cd player, electric windows, power steering, air con,and although top price at £1700,she'll get a lot of years out of it.

Parts are as cheap as chips for it,from the likes of Autovaux, and along with herself,we can get me,and the 2 teenage daughters in it quite comfortably.(Although my 406 HDi is a lot better and bigger.)

Yes,as it's a 1.4 it doesn't set the world alight, but as she is usually the only driver in it,performance doesn't really come into it.

If you look for one, avoid the 8v,as it's not as reliable, according to the many owners sites I've read.

I have a 306 d turbo and unfortunately the engine went recently. I have found a new engine, a 1998 1905cc turbo diesel indirect injection - the same as before - but need to bypass the immobiliser before i go and put it in. It has a mechanical lucas pump with a solenoid immobiliser unit. If anyone could help that would be great.

Cheers

Nah! Ta! Found my Aussie model has no immobiliser and to get volts to the Stop Solenoid all I had to do was change over the wiring and the blue socket from the XUD114 injector pump and connect it up on the XUD110.

Do you know what the cam operated switch does on top of the fuel pump on the throttle arm?
What does it switch on? or off? Thanks.
