I have a neighbour with a 13 year old banger E class - donated by his f-i-l (& landlord).

Last week he started to spray the bonnet & front wings with a spray can of Gold paint.

I went out and asked him to move his car as my car (57 Reg, £20K of my money) was only 20 feet away - the drives are close although houses are not.

Lastnight he again appeared with the can and I asked him to cease as with the sunny weather and gusty winds the spray can go anywhere. He just continued the patchwork spray on the rusty front half of the car.

I threatened that any damage would be repaired at his cost - he jsut continued waving the can about.

7/8 years ago I spent hours cleaning silver paint the from of my then pristine car.
He had sprayed the tow bar of a delapidated caravan.

I cannot put the new car in the garage as 1) The other car is in it 2) the new car is too tall and too wide - 21st Century cars do not fit mid 20th century garages. Read more

A claybar will sort any overspray, it did on my old Fiesta which came back from the bodyshop covered in fine gold flecks!

The engine has started stalling when the revs drop; when going into neutral at traffic lights for example. Problem worse when the engine is hot. Started as an intermittant problem but now very frequent. Also when engine is hot the throttle sticks in the closed position. No other engine problems noted.

It will be your idle air control valve. Only comes in to play when the motor has warmed up.
It's on the front of the throttle body, has a two wire power connector for the solenoid plunger, and is held on by 4 no2 posidrive screws. Take off the air filter to get access. There is a cardboard gasket between it and the throttle body, you may need to replace this when you fit the iac valve after cleaning its insides with carb. cleaner spray. Or you could just try squirting carb cleaner at it in situ (probably wont work). Clean it and its good for another 50K miles. If the throttles sticking shut it could need a spray with carburetor spray anyway, take the air cleaner of and see how gunked the engine side of the butterfly valve is.

the door looms breaking is a common problem, but it isn't the op's problem as the central locking works fine with the key in the lock which shows the circuit for the motors is complete which leaves it as a problem with the remote part.

Hi,

I've got a Renault Megane coupe sport 1.6 1998, the is a problem with the speedo where it seems to work when the car is started from cold then stops shortly afterwards.

I've posted picture of what I think is the speed sensor, can you please review and let me know if I'm looking in the right place:

It was on offer in Costco

I've never seen Castrol oil in Costco but they do sell Mobil 1 and have recently added Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel at the same price. I read a while (but no idea if it's true) that both oils are the same, the TD bit is simply for marketing purposes. The content of both products data sheets is the same.

Last time I checked, Costco price was £23.50 (inc VAT) for 4L.

Started the car this morning from cold (outside temp 18C) and noticed the oil pressure light took about 1 second after the engine started to go out. Drove about ten miles parked up for about 30 minutes came back to warm engine and started again, again about 1 second for the oil pressure light to go out.
The car has covered less than 44k miles from new, been serviced by Volvo from new and since we bought it at 25k miles had oil changes every 6k miles - always using the recommended 5/30 fully synthetic oil.

Is this the start of a sludging issue or should I start by looking at the oil pressure switch ? Read more

Thanks to all above for replies and peace of mind if nothing else.

To cure the smoke on startup I found if I take out the air filter and give it a good clean or replace the element the smoking goes away. I usually have to do this at 6k intervals between services.

Well don't sell your cars just yet - or it might be a chance to buy a decent motor for peanuts !

Edit:-

As suggested in the subject line in view of the the fact that this topic ain't going to go away, decided to turn this thread into a volumized one stop shop for all matters about VED Bands.

Usual rules apply - will be locked after 100 replies and volume 2 started.

Ineveitably this will include a political slant, any rants will be moderated or chopped.

Any standalone posts will be moved in here.

I think that b308 is being a bit over-critical. Anyone can be poor. Talking to a villager here today, they live in a Council House, both adults work (manual workers) to bring up three children all of school age. They need a car as they live in a rural village, 6 miles to nearest town, infrequent and expensive buses. It is also 3 miles to school, so its on foot or by car as there is no subsidised bus service for them. They own a Volvo S40 2.0 petrol, bought 3 years ago and it falls into the tax trap. They took a three year loan to buy it. They will sell it and downsize now.

They bought the car because of perceived safety, quality and slow depreciation. They feel penalized now - badly treated. Their fuel prices have rocketed as have other costs. They feel poor and they're decent hard working people who don't claim benefits.

Everybody's Fool

Hello Everyone,

I'm selling my car & sorting a few of the areas that need addressed b4 I put on the market.

One of the front headlights has condensation in it, which doesn't really affect its performance; however it does stick out like a sore thumb.

The light is sealed, so no way of simply clipping itf of & giving it a rub to clear this. I've got rid of some of this by putting the light on full beam for a few minutes, which has cleared some but still doesn?t look that great.

I think I?ll have to get the whole light replaced at somewhere like Euro parts.

Does anyone have any advice of clearing the condensation without replacing the light itself?

Thanks

most common way ive seen is to put a sheet of foil over the light then turn the light on for awhile, the foil keeps the heat in and it dries itself out, this used to cure the problem permanently in most cars

Servelan

I need to change the off side head light on elder daughters Micra. We have a spare headlight so I can see where the fixings are. However, I can get to the top fixings on the car easily, but how do I get to the bottom fixings under the grille? Does the grill need to be removed, if it does, how is it removed?
Any advice gratefully received!

Doc

On pre 1998 models the grille needs to removed.
Release the 2 mounting clips each side by twisting them through 45 deg. and pressing them out from behind.
Release the central clip by pressing it down with a screwdriver, then withdraw the grille.
