16 days after owning our new 2nd hand Touareg the engine fault light appeared. 21 days later the car is still in the VW garage. It needed a new turbo and gearbox. We have had a courtesy car from VW during this time. We have lost confidence in this car and feel that the repairs have taken an unreasonable length of time. We are considering asking for a full refund. Has anyone else experienced a problem like this? Read more

maybe inquire about an extended warantee and hint you may reject the car if it is not forthcoming gratis or for an advantageous rate ?

Am curious , have always rated this engine , but what kind of dough did you part with ?

My uncle has a camper van based on a 2000 Peugeot Boxer 1.9TD. When he starts the engine, sparks are visible from the earth strap between the chassis rail and the gearbox housing.
I suspect it would make better sense, rather than just clean up all the contacts, to replace the strap.
Does anyone know a good source for earth straps, and how to test them. I suspect a reasonable test would be the electrical resistance of the strap but don't know what sort of figure would be normal.

Anything is better than white rust; so overall, it's definitely going to be a benefit.

Copper grease comes in many different forms. The most common one years ago was Copaslip; which is a mix of zinc and copper particles in a bentone clay base for high temp performance. Some of the later products can be based on anything, including hydrocarbon oils.

One of the best ways to ensure a good electrical contact is the use of toothed [shake-proof] washers. The better ones are vicious things that, when tightened, bite into the surfaces and provide multiple metal-to-metal pathways - not something easy to achieve with two flat surfaces, particularly if previously corroded.

Contact grease [often sold as battery terminal grease] is probably the optimum for joints that are not too exposed to salt-spray.

I think I will shortly need a new battery for my 1.6 petrol Focus. The question is do i have to replace the current battery with another Calcium battery or can I just use a regular lead acid battery, will this harm the alternator etc ? Read more

My 98 Mondeo ( same engine?) needs a calcium battery.
Charging circuitry was changed from 1997 to SCS ( Smart Charging System).
The Bosch site used to spell it out. ( no longer live)
I would be amazed if the Focus was different.

Hi, I need to change the sidelight bulbs on the above car. The offside I can at least open up but looks like it will be impossible and fiddly to reach unless I become double-jointed and can do it blindly; access to the nearside is completely blocked by the battery, but would then suffer the same issue. There would be the same problem with the main beam bulbs! Can anyone offer any advice - is this a headlight assembly out job?! Thanks. Read more

halsteadk

The easiest solution to this does indeed seem to be to remove the headlight units, according to various posts at www.hyundaicoupe.info. You can then much more easily access the sidelight and/or main beam bulbs and cables.

In practice, the simplest solution was to wait for it to fail its MOT today (the sidelights not exactly being a major safety feature so I was happy to use the car without them for a week) and let the garage replace them for £5 each - about the same as the bulbs would have cost.

I have a honda accord cdti executive with a sat nav unit, unfortunately the sat nav disc is missing. I have seen one to buy on internet but the seller said it is only compatible with Honda accord 2006 onwards. I wonder why this would be so since it is only an upgrade to the ealier dvd that came with 2005 sat nav unit.
Does anybody have an experience of using this 3.22 DVD version on 2005 honda accord sat nav unit?

{locked, seeing a you have also posted the same in the Sat Nav questions thread. Any replies there please}

Diesel Trajet Automatic, 35,000 miles, FHSH and been very reliable so far. Filled up with biodiesel about two weeks ago and the car has been running very well. This morning, the car started OK and idled OK, but had no power. It stopped and was reluctant to start. After several attempts and getting about half a mile from home I rang the AA.

First thing to check was the fuel filter, but this was nice and clean. We then spotted the engine managment and immobiliser lights on and the engine would fire when they went out, but died within a second or so. Car towed to Hyundai dealer with suspected electronics fault.

Any ideas?

PS handbook does not say not to use biodiesel and previous usage has not caused a problem, although it is not used often. Read more

High or Low Can faults on Trajets Auto's are mainly ECU based between the Engine and Transmission ECU.
Diesel Injector faults on these cars can cause problems with starting. If the pressure is not correct they will have trouble starting.

I have a neighbour with a 13 year old banger E class - donated by his f-i-l (& landlord).

Last week he started to spray the bonnet & front wings with a spray can of Gold paint.

I went out and asked him to move his car as my car (57 Reg, £20K of my money) was only 20 feet away - the drives are close although houses are not.

Lastnight he again appeared with the can and I asked him to cease as with the sunny weather and gusty winds the spray can go anywhere. He just continued the patchwork spray on the rusty front half of the car.

I threatened that any damage would be repaired at his cost - he jsut continued waving the can about.

7/8 years ago I spent hours cleaning silver paint the from of my then pristine car.
He had sprayed the tow bar of a delapidated caravan.

I cannot put the new car in the garage as 1) The other car is in it 2) the new car is too tall and too wide - 21st Century cars do not fit mid 20th century garages. Read more

A claybar will sort any overspray, it did on my old Fiesta which came back from the bodyshop covered in fine gold flecks!

The engine has started stalling when the revs drop; when going into neutral at traffic lights for example. Problem worse when the engine is hot. Started as an intermittant problem but now very frequent. Also when engine is hot the throttle sticks in the closed position. No other engine problems noted.

It will be your idle air control valve. Only comes in to play when the motor has warmed up.
It's on the front of the throttle body, has a two wire power connector for the solenoid plunger, and is held on by 4 no2 posidrive screws. Take off the air filter to get access. There is a cardboard gasket between it and the throttle body, you may need to replace this when you fit the iac valve after cleaning its insides with carb. cleaner spray. Or you could just try squirting carb cleaner at it in situ (probably wont work). Clean it and its good for another 50K miles. If the throttles sticking shut it could need a spray with carburetor spray anyway, take the air cleaner of and see how gunked the engine side of the butterfly valve is.

the door looms breaking is a common problem, but it isn't the op's problem as the central locking works fine with the key in the lock which shows the circuit for the motors is complete which leaves it as a problem with the remote part.
