Just p/xed passat 1.9TDI for Audi A6 1.9TDI. Passat on vw 505.01 oil and have 5l of halfords finest spare. If necessary can this be used to top up A6 which is on vw 506.01 longlife oil?
Any help appreciated!

506 01 is for vw / audi longlife service ,505 01 for fixed annual service. I dont think top ups in small amounts would cause any problems . though i believe vw recommend 505 01 is not used with models that have DPF s fitted. I have used 505 01 to top up my golf which is on longlife service 506 01/ 507 ( also had some left over from previous golf ) not had any problems

It states in the book that if you used oil other than longlife oil for topping up to resort to time/distance servicing. 507 spec oil if fully synthetic and designed for use to upto 20000 miles. 505.01 is semi synthetic and designed for 12 months or 10000 miles. I personally would not mix 505.01 spec oil in my golf with 507 spec and drive it for 24 months or 20000 miles

Do Halfords sell a 505.01, actually tested and certified by VW (not "suitable for" or other weasel words) under their brand? There is no listing of Halfords on the VW list of approved oils SFAIK.
|
Halfords does list VW505.01on the back of their fully synthetic diesel oil without the weasal words, - it appears genuine. It was ESSO Comma oil last time I checked.

There are no Comma oils approved to 505.01. From their web: "Meets requirements of: VW 505.01, FORD WSS M2C917-A, VW 505.00/VW 500.00, MB229.1" That is not the same as VW approval. There is a VW list, available from dealers, and possibly VW UK. The most recent list I have seen ,
www.usr32registry.org/downloads/oil_list_9-11-2007...f
is devoid of Comma and Halfords branding. Comma, BTW, is owned by Mobil. If 'twer me, I would be very chary of an oil which is not on the list. Small firms like Millers have specific approval for 507.00 oils - so why not Halfords for VW approvals?

Yes, I usually don't trust such weasel words. EXXON (ESSO) own Mobil and Comma, there is a lubricants division at Fawley, ESSO Ultron is on the list as are some US market Mobil oils (but the list does seem to be for the USA).
Maybe VW approve an oil under one name but insist that the oil companies have to resubmit and pay under every product name and brand?
I have some VW505.00 507.00 5w30 oil by AC Delco, it was only £25 for 5 litres. It doesn't say "approved" or "suitable for". VW should register them as trademarks, then nobody could abuse the rating system.

Shame about that DD: the list I found from a US source was dated late 2007, and was apparently a world-wide list of "Approved" oils.

Nortones, I have managed to fix it. As the link was previously clickable, it didn't like it as it was hotlinking. To get around it, I've posted the link in full (instead of via tinyurl) and removed the http part to make it non clickable.

DD, your link doesn't work for me!
Comma Diesel 5W-40 is 505.01
Comma Prolife 5W-30 is 504.00/507.00
Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 is 504.00/507.00 and BMW LL04
Castrol Edge 5W-30 is 504.00/507.00
Shell Ultra VX is 504.00/507.00
Surely one of the above oils is available in your area OP?
|
Is the Fuchs brand on the approved list?
|
Yes, sorry I forgot Fuchs.
Fuchs Titan GT1 Longlife 111 5W-30 is 504.00/507.00

Try copying the link into an email, save it as a draft, and then click on the link.

The original tinyurl had a comma on the end, that's why it was bust!
|
I thought Mobil had been taken over by BP;their service stations certainly have.

I moved the comma over, but then the issue of hotlinking occured, which you'll see if you click on the link I removed.

Watch exactly what you buy with the Castrol Edge. This comes in several versions, not just VW spec. There's a GM specific version too, for example. Needs a check of the small print - I think it's very poor the way these look the same on the shelf. Same goes for Shell Helix too - bizarely, the Helix VX is a VW oil, but there's also a GM specific version.

Re Quizmans "Comma Diesel 5W-40 is 505.01
Comma Prolife 5W-30 is 504.00/507.00"
I can't see any evidence that Comma are "approved" as they are not listed. You might have further information, but as the website language is as described earlier, I would liken their claims to Amsoil. Never been submitted to VAG for testing. Which is why, I presume, VAG produce a list of oils that are known to meet their requirements. To avoid doubt.

I agree with what you say nortones, I also avoid the oils that say things like "Recommended where an xxxxspec is required" but I have never been suspicious enough to avoid one that just lists things like API CH4. ACEA A4 B4 C4, VW507.00, I don't check if oils have been tested by API and ACEA either. You have me in a quandry or maybe a denial that I am wrong. I hope there is some other explanation, and may email VW.
|
Comma products may be repackaged Mobil etc, and thus fundamentally OK. If VW said so, that would be good enough. But Mobil might be put out at being undercut!!! Re Amsoil they don't even have many of their their oils API certified - buying on faith.
|
Mobil, Comma and Esso are all made by the same company it seems.
If it says 507.00 on the can it will be OK.
I didn't think there was anybody else so concerned with oil as me.
|
I would think that if it says 507.00 it must be OK for VW/Audi's. I have heard that Comma is a decent oil, but I always use Castrol Edge 5W-30. It was on offer in Costco, I can't remember the price, but it was cheaper than usual.
|
It was on offer in Costco
I've never seen Castrol oil in Costco but they do sell Mobil 1 and have recently added Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel at the same price. I read a while (but no idea if it's true) that both oils are the same, the TD bit is simply for marketing purposes. The content of both products data sheets is the same.
Last time I checked, Costco price was £23.50 (inc VAT) for 4L.
