01 2.0 HDI Is my DMF on the way out? - smokescreen
Hi all,

I've noticed in the last week that when holding onto the gear stick slightly or lightly putting my foot onto the clutch, there is a pulsating feeling that correlates to the car's RPM and load.

For example, heavy accelerating, and you can feel the pulsating feeling through the pedal and slightly through the gear stick, whilst at a steady 70mph not on an incline, I can barely sense this pulsating feeling, but again definately related to the engine's RPM.

Before I get this checked out very soon, is it safe to say the DMF is on its way ?

Thanks in advanced.

If this is a 110hp unit; then it's a definite possibility. Does it squeak when you turn it off?
01 2.0 HDI Is my DMF on the way out? - smokescreen
Yup its the 110hp. The engine doesnt squeak when turned off, but you can feel the engine a bit more when idling, though fine on the move. At times, the idle NVH is fine, it varies.

The other possibility is a slight power imbalance between the cylinders.

The injection quantity variation [smooth running] figures in live-data will graphically display any extra fuel the ECU is adding to even-up the duration of each flywheel revolution.

Either way; it needs looking at fairly urgently as a failed DMF leaves a very big hole.

Screwloose,

From what I've read, its looking (unfortunately) much more like the DMF on the 110hp version wasnt designed to last the car's lifespan by any means, and thats not exclusive to PSA either.

I know of a diesel expert up in the North East so i'll book it in and let you know of the outcome. Suspect a potential huge bill. Any idea how much a new DMF is ? Cant seem to see a price.

They only really need to last as long as the clutch; [if only...] as you can't fit a new clutch to a used DMF.

Down South, a dealer's DMF and clutch would be heading for £1000 fitted. Should be a lot less where you are. You could fit a solid flywheel kit; but on your own head be it. I wouldn't.
01 2.0 HDI Is my DMF on the way out? - smokescreen
Nah, skipping the non-DMF flywheel kit, read that the DMF is there to smoothen out the engine's output - with it missing, it could cause long term damage.

Dont even think its worth spending close to £1000 on a Xsara's DMF + clutch...! Can get a primera for only a little more.

Looks like I might have to roll this into an auction...

According to service.citroen.com the 110 HDi Xsara is not fitted with a DMF......

I'd be getting the tyres balanced first, and checking for any signs of driveshaft run out before ripping the gear box out!

Yes, the HDi 110 RHZ version of the Xsara has a conventional solid flywheel, not a DMF.

...the symptoms you have sound very like I had when the clutch itself was starting to fail on my Xsara. It eventually reached the point that the clutch was slipping and I had it replaced a couple of months ago. It cost around £320 for a clutch kit, fitting and resurfacing the flywheel, from a Citroen specialist.

Although Peugeot always fitted DMFs from the introduction of the HDi 110, Citroen for some reason didn't. The first Citroen HDi 110 to have a DMF was the C5. The Xantia & Xsara 110 fortunately escaped it !

Oh fantastic news - you have no idea how pleased I am to read both those posts of yours! I could live with £320 for the clutch kit.

I did suspect a while ago I escaped the DMF trap, as mentioned GSF parts didnt have a DMF, but assumed because of all the other models with DMF that GSF parts didnt get it right. As for a single vane turbo, even better :-)

Looks like I'll be getting it done after all :-)

I also just got registered to the service.Citroen.com site - single flywheel!!!

Thanks to everyone involved, really appreciated!

Are you 100% sure on that ? You could be right, GSF parts didnt have a DMF for this car, but given other models such as the 307 HDi 110 use a DMF, made a bit of an asumption.

Any chance you can see if it uses a single vane or variable vane turbo if you have a min?

The tyres have been done very lately - all balanced. Shaking steering until I sorted. The rears were the Michellins, had lasted 60k (life of car so far) and had started to degrade!

Yes 100% !

It has a conventional non-variable vane turbo too.

Just got a quote for the clutch to be done - £225 all in. Ahh , much better than the £1k at first :-) Also confirmed it has no DMF deathtrap! So a common rail engine without the problems of a DMF / Variable vane turbo... a few less things to worry about, just gotta hope the Bosch fuel system behaves now.

Hi all,

Just thought I'd update this. Had the clutch done a few weeks ago, and the sensation on the clutch pedal as described earlier in the thread has totally disappeared.

I can double confirm as others have said, that this car definately has a single mass flywheel which is rare for a common rail.

However, I can also confirm this problem will probably show up in 50k miles again - according to the guy who fitted the clutch, its a common design fault of PSA for this engine and the clutch release bearings.

He did comment on a friend with the similar HDi 90 engine managing 89k before his bearings started to play up as well. Good thing its only £225...!

I do also get the squeal from starting and stopping the car, but it turns out its the alternator belt, which is peanuts to change.

Once again, thanks to everyone who contributed!

I have been reading this ongoing discussion with interest as I have just had my Picasso through the MOT and it's an 03 2.0HDI and the only comment made was that the clutch may be on it's way out (110k on the clock) but may need to change the DMF as well.
Do you or anybody know for sure if the 03 model has a DMF or single flywheel as this could have a big bearing on my future well-being! Any guidance appreciated.

How do I register on Citroen.com? I would like to check out some details on my Picasso.

I'm wondering if you should be looking at citroen.co.uk instead?
