That's quite common; it's rarely the bulb and many manufacturers will only supply the whole headlight. [Up to £1000 a go.] The ballast fires up at 10,000 volts; so they may feel that it's a safer option.

Is it even possible to access it inside the light unit without breaking it open?

My 102000 mile 2.0 130bhp Mondeo is playing up! Its a 54 plate generally motorway miles and has been dealer serviced. basically it starts from cold well though with a puff of black smoke. It is when warm that the problem occurs - when restarting it can often take 3/4 turns of the key and then it seems to idle on 3 cylinders with absolutely no power but then eventually clears and behaves normally. Its been slightly rough running for a while now and although I asked the main dealer to have a listen they reported back its normal noise and some are more noisy then others -' Ive got a noisy one!'
Its spent the day at a diesel injection specialists who have reported no significant faults aprt from one injector that need remapping but it was very minor. They say it is still very lumpy and have suggested that it could be the flywheel out of kilter and the engine is trying to compensate for the imbalance. It had a new clutch at 61000 miles but not the flywheel.
Any thoughts from all you very knowledgeable people?
Thanks

Has anyone done a compression test? Does it knock at start-up or shutdown? Has the starter nose been checked for metal frag?

A couple of years back we bought a new Punto from a Fiat / Alfa dealer.

So he could tax it quickly and let us collect the car (without waiting for insurance docs to come by post etc), he gave us the phone number of an insurer that gave a temporary free policy number IF you let them give a quote to you.

I think it might have been NU, does anyone know or have the details?

thanks, Craig

VAG did it for us with MrsP's Golf, I'll try and dig out the documentation.

Is that the cost?

Son's car in for a service and he needed the back disks skimmed £50 and a new water pump fitted due to leak ( a known problem apparently)

£450 seems steep - anyone with the same experience? Read more

This does seem very steep, however it is a bargain compared the the £400 for the first service on my diesel A4, which is just an oil and filter and pollen filter change.

Afternoon folks.

I am representing the estate of a deceased in a fatal accident. It involves a Road Traffic Accident and at the moment I am investigating liability prior to instructing reconstruction evidence and issuing court proceedings.
In the course of my investigations I need to find out the following.

1 - The Track width of a VW Golf Mk III 1997 - r reg GL version. CC unknown
2 - The Track width of a Peugeot 106 - year 2000 - x reg. 1.1 ltr
3 - The standard width of the faast lane of a motorway - specifically the fast lane of the M1 Junction 12-13 southbound.

Liability arguments need to be progressed and this is needed to see whether investing in the cost of a full reconstruction report can be justified.

Have searched Statutory instruments and have contacted VW and Peugeot UK with no joy. They seem to want £100 for the pleasure of providing such response.

Hope all you knowledgeable folks can help.

If anyone has read my other posts regarding a leaking sun roof, it has been fixed by a small amount of sealant. No further problems.

Many thanks in advance.

Reply to rtj70 - many thanks for your concerns, no mention of dates, client name, registrations etc. No problems with Date Protections Act then!

Track width is relevant. Car dimentions are only secondary to the specific track width.

If I was asking for car dimentions then yes Parkers guide would be useful but in this instance, complex evidence is needed.

Many thanks for all your comments. All the data is now found and I can gete on with my job.

According to an unmentionable source, the air tanks are filled by plugging an onboard compressor into the mains.

Since getting my new Focus company wheels a few months ago it has attracted more than its fair share of damage , all caused by other folks who didn't hang around to apologize and offer to pay for the repairs. Obviously they were in a hurry.
Within days of getting it , 2 minor dents appeared on the bonnet (looks like a cricket ball landed on it) , next , a 4 inch scratch on the rear quarter panel, then another scratch on the other side. Followed by a small dent on the nearside rear door and just yesterday a dent on the rear panel.
It's beginning to look a bit shabby and as I have to drive it for the next 3 yrs is it reasonable to expect my company to pay for repairs. Can it be claimed for on the insurance? I haven't spoken to anyone about it yet but would be interested in your opinions. Read more

I would think waiting until just before a car goes back to fix all scrapes is more cost effective. A panel might have a dent or two now and cost £x. In 2 years it might have a few more dents and still only cost £x.

When it comes to cars and dents and scratches though I found:

- After 4 years my VW Passat went back with no parking "dings" or scratches at all. Only mark on paint was there from when I got it (glue like) and it was (a) small and (b) didn't want to cause damage removing it. Dealer where it got dropped off removed it with his finger nail ;-)

- Within months of having the Mondeo (previous model) it had stone chip damage, light scratches and a few "dings". Worse again after 4 years. Also someone did key it. Around door handles there were swirls/scratches due to finger nails!

From this I deduced the VW had far better quality paint and did not dent as easily in car parks. So far the Mazda6 after 3ish months fairing okay.

Hello backroomers. I have been using the forum for over a year now, and find it excellent, only now have i decided to register.

I also have a question. I am 19 years old and have a Fiat Grande Punto, and 2 years no claims with Tesco insurance.

I would like to insure a classic Land Rover, but so far it has been so expensive, and all the "cheaper" classic car insurance policies all seem to have a minimum age of 21.
Does anyone know of any companies who don't have this minimum age, or any other way around the problem?

Thanks in advance, Rob. Read more

Definitely try NFU. I insure a classic tractor through them, and the only age restrictions are the legal ones, ie 14 off road, 16 on road. That includes business use, if I wanted it, and towing up to the legal maximum number of trailers. All for £26 pa.

I have been looking for a while at New Vauxhalls and I am staggered at how much the prices from dealer to dealer vary and what appears to be a small dealer smiths of ilkeston seem to be a lot cheaper than the big groups.

I dont have a part exchange and am a cash buyer so it does make the deals quite transparant.

The deal I have been offered I have put to various other agents and they say they cannt buy them for that price. Dont they all buy for the price with the same margin? If I could understand this it would make doing a deal much easier.

These vauxhall partners deals do look good and the dealer in Ilkeston said that they supply you the car not straight from the manufacturer. They look a better deal if you want to take 0% or a finance deposit allowance. I still think I might be better off going straight to there special offers page on the dealers website
