Track width of Peugeot 106 & Golf Mk III - Christopher
Afternoon folks.

I am representing the estate of a deceased in a fatal accident. It involves a Road Traffic Accident and at the moment I am investigating liability prior to instructing reconstruction evidence and issuing court proceedings.
In the course of my investigations I need to find out the following.

1 - The Track width of a VW Golf Mk III 1997 - r reg GL version. CC unknown
2 - The Track width of a Peugeot 106 - year 2000 - x reg. 1.1 ltr
3 - The standard width of the faast lane of a motorway - specifically the fast lane of the M1 Junction 12-13 southbound.

Liability arguments need to be progressed and this is needed to see whether investing in the cost of a full reconstruction report can be justified.

Have searched Statutory instruments and have contacted VW and Peugeot UK with no joy. They seem to want £100 for the pleasure of providing such response.

Hope all you knowledgeable folks can help.

If anyone has read my other posts regarding a leaking sun roof, it has been fixed by a small amount of sealant. No further problems.

Many thanks in advance.

Christopher

If this is related to a client then is asking on a public forum the best option? Can we all be relied upon to give such evidence etc.

Are you sure you need track width though? Are you talking about the dimensions of the car itself. If so wouldn't something like Parker's or What Car suffice?

Track widths can be found at:
www.carfolio.com/specifications/
(Assuming that their source info is accurate). The other way is to buy some old brochures on Ebay..

Re: carriageway width, I was going to guess at 12m, giving 4m per lane. Are there any civil engineers in the house?. This site says 3.65m but says nominal width, so may vary:

Better to email DfT and see if they can answer that one?

You could try using Google earth and the measuring tool.

I'd say the M1 near J12 is more like 3.55-3.6m from Google Earth.

Still do not see why track width is needed and not vehicle width. But then we do not know or need/want to know details of the actual case.

At one time car brochures would qoute such details (back in the 70's) but over the years they became less comprehensive and I would be suprised if you'll find such data by the late 90's.

Perhaps a Haynes manual would be more use? You can also buy the manufacturers own work shop manuals in CD form ebay, which would certainly be considered an reliable source, however they will be bootleg copies you'll have to make your own mind about the legality of using them.

I have an old Audi A4 one on my desk where comprehensive technical data is in a seperate black and white booklet. They dont want the facts taking up valuable space in the brochure which is best used for big glossy photos and marketing b.s.!

Lane widths will vary depending on a number of factors. Also the standards of today may not have been true for when the motorway was built.

For todays standards see www.standardsforhighways.co.uk/dmrb/index.htm then Section 1, Part 2 (TD27/05) for details of cross sections.

Reply to rtj70 - many thanks for your concerns, no mention of dates, client name, registrations etc. No problems with Date Protections Act then!

Track width is relevant. Car dimentions are only secondary to the specific track width.

If I was asking for car dimentions then yes Parkers guide would be useful but in this instance, complex evidence is needed.

Many thanks for all your comments. All the data is now found and I can gete on with my job.
