Can anyone tell me if this is any good? I know I have to drive one myself but this car seems to split opinion with some mags raving about it and others saying that the engine is ridiculously peaky( and quesion the power output) and is hard work on the motorway. I don't really mind this as don't do too many long hauls. I currently run a koda Fabia VRS though which really kicks you in the back. I do miss working an engine though.

Also has Renault managed to sort out its patchy reliability record. I spoken around and it seems you either get a good one or a really terrible one. Also consiering a Mini Cooper S which will probably make more financial success. Think is the bespoke naure of the Renault Sports is Very mouthwatering. They are made in their own small factory apparently like much more expensive cars. Read more

Driven the Clio Cup in the former model: probably lighter than the current car, making up for greater claimed power. Best handling I've ever experienced, and good feedback, surprisingly supple ride, indicating better sorted suspension for real roads than the Type R. Engine much pokier than Honda 2 litre: doesn't require 6000 rpm to get a move on. Low gearing, noisy, but its not sold as a boulevardiers transport.....

Trick one to explain, but I'll do my best...

My 2004 Focus makes an odd noise, from the gearbox I think. I sounds like a rattling, Grrrrr...... sound and seems to happen at relatively low revs (around 1800) when not under any load. It is particularly noticable when slowing down and coasting. If I accelerate it goes away.

What could be causing this, and is it the sign of impending problems? Or is it something that's fairly common that I don't need to worry about?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks. Read more

jwood, there are two sticky posts at the top of the page called "NO YEAR OR ENGINE IN SUBJECT LINE = DELETION."

and a further reminder written under the subject header that is written in red when you start your question that says "(INCLUDE year of manufacture, car engine size and nature of problem;
EXCLUDE make/model as this is automatically added at start of subject)"

ps, have now edited in the engine size to your question.

This car is for sale at local Ford dealer and priced at £7999. The car has had 2 owners from new and covered 56k miles. I am awaiting a phone call from the dealer to get a few more details ie service historyect. Your initial thoughts would be very welcome on value for money. Oh yes, what is the difference between the SE AND ES model?

I'm always highly suspicious of premium cars for sale at more normal dealerships. A particular eyebrow raiser is a Honda S2000 specialist that always has a number of Boxsters for sale too that were taken in PX. It makes you wonder if the previous owner had had enough of expensive running costs / unreliability & had sacrificed the once coveted status symbol for a more economical vehicle. Obviously there are other explanations too but having been driven to the brink of chopping my Porsche in for a Toyota / Honda etc before, I'd approach with caution.

Does buying a PX from a main dealer (not of the brand they deal in) give you the same 1 year guarantee etc?

Also, have you test driven one of the 6 cylinder models too, that engine is pretty well respected

Can anyone help with a problem we have with our Peugeot 406 Hdi 90hp 2003 Siemens injection system :-

The problem is that at low revs ( 1500 ? 1900 rpm ) in 4th & 5th the car chugs or hunts, if the throttle is eased off and reapplied or you change down & increase the revs the drivability improves - pulls normally. It also seems to be underpowered but we put this down to emissions & Peugeot cutting back on the power to get it into the lower diesel taxation band.

The car has been with AP Diesel specialist for a few days & they have checked everything on the injection side, they have put 2 new valves in the injector pump & tried another set of injectors in it but could not find anything wrong in their tests & gave the fuel side an all clear, they suggested that it might be clutch or transmission.

It seems to me that occasional the car will respond better & that the problem is almost unnoticeable other times it is obvious. The car has done 100,000 but is ex-lease and we have all the service history, no mention of this problem in the records.

We have been putting injector cleaner in for a while because we thought that dirty injectors were the problem, we mainly use this cleaner every fill anyway ( Millers Sport )

{wish I had a penny for every time someone failed to put the year and engine details in the subject header as per the requests to do so. I could afford to retire} Read more

I'd agree with that - my mate's 306 HDi 90 was giving running troubles, cleaning the MAF has cured it.

I find that with the AA and RAC route planners it is not possible to input a motorway junction, either as a start, finish or via point. Is there a way of getting round this.

I want to go from a small town in Surrey to a village in Northants, I am not particularly looking for BRers recommended routes, but for the record I am travelling from Esher to Hollowell. I am trying to explore the options of different motorway exits i.e. whether it would be best to come off the M1 at - say - J15,or J15A.

Do any route planners allow you to input a motorway junction number? Read more

I decided to go exactly as you descibed, this was Saturday earlyish. It took just 2 hours driving quite sedately.

Thanks for the info Bromptonaut.

I think if I was to convert a car for an underwater project, I wouldn't start with a drophead. You wouldn't want to snog your date wearing SCUBA masks, would you? My vision is more like a stretch limo where you could watch the fish and seaweed in comfort, pour a glass of ale or bubbly and dip into the picnic hamper.

Nearly bought one after an extensive road test- but I pull a small caravan and felt it didn't have quite enough weight and towing allowance. A great pity, because I would have bought it for every other reason. Quietest diesel I have driven, excellent performance and spec. I have been used to many diesels over the years, and this was very good.

Motoring link somewhat tenuous but pretty obvious. I wasn't aware of this before today.

my wifes 1.4 polo engine type BBY last had it,s oil changed a year ago by a vw main agent. (she,s owned the car for 6 months) they used fully synthetic oil, the car has since done 3000 miles. would i be wasting money changig the oil now or should i wait for the longlife service interval(3 years) i'd be changing it myself. thanks in anticipation.

{Sigh!. You obviously think the 3 requests to include year and engine details in the subject header don't apply to you? As no mention of year in the main post either, I've taken the dates from the drop down choice you made} Read more

Short, and therefore low temperature operation of the engine is as harmful (probably more so than high temp/high mileage useage) as other usage and the oil would be due for change after 12 months.
