I find that with the AA and RAC route planners it is not possible to input a motorway junction, either as a start, finish or via point. Is there a way of getting round this.

I want to go from a small town in Surrey to a village in Northants, I am not particularly looking for BRers recommended routes, but for the record I am travelling from Esher to Hollowell. I am trying to explore the options of different motorway exits i.e. whether it would be best to come off the M1 at - say - J15,or J15A.

Do any route planners allow you to input a motorway junction number?

If there is a petrol station or Travelodge at the junction, you could use their postcode.

maps.google.co.uk allows you to move the route using the mouse - just click on the displayed route near your junction and pull it onto the road you want.
you can also put an end point on a junction by (right) clicking on the junction.

www.transportdirect.info allows you to specify the roads you want to use - and those you dont, so you can force it to come off at a particular junction

It doesn't precisely solve your problem, but Google Maps is very flexible. You'll need a start and finish place name or post code, but you can then drag the start and finish points, plus any via points you want to introduce, anywhere you like on the map. So you can enter your whole route initially, then just drag and drop to your heart's content to reposition the start point or a via point at the various motorway junctions you're interested in.

I e-mailed the AA about this last year. Their reply was that it is postcode based only, so entering a Motorway number will always result in you being sent via Manchester because it will read, for example, M40 Jct 8 as postcode Manchester 40!

I have not found a planner that allows junction entry, but I do look on a map for the place name nearest the junction and put that in the "via" option; this usually works.

One thing I did suggest to the AA in a follow up e-mail was that they provide a list of all the Motorway junctions with their postcode [ easy enough to add in with a link to a dedicated page ] but so far they haven't done this - they didn't even reply to me!

*drops hint to anyone on this forum who works for the AA route planning website department*

Use maps.google as suggested above. Fantastic site.

Why would a motoway junction have a postcode - nobody wants to write to them.

From either 15 or 15A you end up struggling out of Northampton through Kingsthorpe etc.

Dependent on time of day may be best to keep clear of the town altogether. Stay on M1 to J18, A428 to West Haddon then local roads through Guilsborough to Hollowell.

Only potential downside is that Guilsborough hosts a large rural comprehensive, probably a mini rush hour at 15:30 as 1000+ kids are bussed out.

I decided to go exactly as you descibed, this was Saturday earlyish. It took just 2 hours driving quite sedately.

Thanks for the info Bromptonaut.
