Mazda-Man

Hi guys - just been test driving the Focus. Have been offered a spotless 56 plate (Jan 07 reg) with 14k on the clock from a Ford Direct outlet at £8k (screen price £8.5k) with a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty. I'm not keen to buy private and not into auctions so is this a reasonable deal? Aside from top speed there seems to be little to choose between the 1.4 and 1.6 Focus and the 1.4 seemed fine with 3 adults in it. Any thoughts?

You made the right choice going for the 1.6 rather than the 1.4 which is a bit under powered especially with a load on board. The 1.6 is a good compromise and allrounder and fairly economical to own.

The HonestJohn review of the Zafira B says:

"Restyled Zafira with same Flex 7 seats, but centre seats modified so outer two can move closer if middle seat not being used"

Try as I might, I just can't work this out myself, and the manual says nowt on the subject. Anyone got ideas or was John being less than Honest ;-) Read more

I think the Meriva can do that trick as can the Signum but not my 2006 Zafira B. There is a Zafira mid-life facelift model out now or very soon, so is Honest John reviewing one of these?

looks like I can now take the Punto van (119 emissions) straight through central London without incurring a charge.

Heading South off the bottom of the M1 on Route to Dover, what is the best route through central London and will it be a better bet than the M25, which I have used for years?

It would also save me paying the extra 50p over the car charges on the bridge. I always found this unfair for a small car based van that is dwarfed by cars around it, such as the new mega size Mondeo.

It now seems like justice has been done for my thrift in running this small vehicle and engine and it feels like Ken has given me the `Keys to the City` for cutting straight across on route to Dover and the continent.

But its been 28 years and I assume there have been some changes...

No, indeed not. Still no point in driving to Croydon. Anyway, haven't you anything better to do on Christmas day than go to, of all places, Croydon?

I had to post this little story.
Last Friday morning a friend of mine was driving to work in her BMW. As she left a 60mph zone to enter a 30mph zone she failed to notice a police car behind her, and that she was doing 70mph!!!

They stopped her and had a long chat with her in the patrol car, saying that she was potentially looking at a ban. In the end they let her off with a verbal caution. Is this a record? Her "luck" may have something to do with the fact that she is young, blonde, and very pretty!! Read more

Dreadfully sorry woodbines! Just trying to give a professional opinion. Before anyone can make an informed decision they are entitled to be aware of all the potential scenarios. But I forgot bar room lawyers are far better qualified than I. Never let the truth stand in the way of a good story.
And what if??????? Lets leave it there.

Well, after months of argument with Ford and their local main dealer, and the involvement of my solicitor, my 2006 Mondeo TDCI estate was finally repaired under warranty in early January. A new fuel pump and several other components finally had it running properly. The dealer apologised for the "misunderstandings" (in other words, they failed miserably to screw me for ££££'s of work).

Having lost all confidence in the car, and in Ford, and following some excellent advice from this forum, I am now the proud owner of a '55 registered Subaru Legacy Tourer 2.0R. I collected the car three weeks ago from a Subaru main dealer and left them the Mondeo as a trade-in.
This is my first time driving a Subaru and I am very pleased with the car and the 4wd really does enable the car to bite down onto the road. It has a feeling of strength and solidity that was missing from the Mondeo and appears to be altogether better assembled. I don't miss the Mondeo wind noise from around the driver's door post and the various creaks and rattles that the Mondeo had developed.
The Subaru is going to cost me more in fuel and insurance but I now do a lot fewer miles than I used to due to a change of working location, so that is not a big issue.
Many thanks to all those who recommended a Legacy, its a good choice and one I would never have considered before reading this forum. Read more

Hi, Dr_Duffy

Welcome to the club.

I am on my third Subaru now. I moved from Volvo because I found it nearly impossible to get out of the avenue on days when there was packed snow. We live in the Peak District. There aren?t any peaks, but neither is there anything flat.

My first was a Legacy 2.0 Y reg. manual. That car proved itself very nicely in the first snowfall. The only ones who could get around were 4x4s and Subarus, which is a 4x4 really. My neighbour, who is a mechanic and a Discovery fan, remarked that it would do everything that the Discovery would do but without the fuss. It would be a total difference off-road or in deeper snow though. The ground clearance is not enough. I part-ex?d the car because it was a bundle of faults.

My next was a Legacy 2.0 ?04 reg. automatic. That was trouble free and ran like velvet, but it had no life in it.

To get a better ground clearance, bigger tyres and more life I exchanged it for a 2.5 Outback ?56 reg. automatic. I think that I?ll stay with this one for a while.

I have a T180 Tourer (2.2 D4D) 18 months old and 35K on the clock. Until recently a cold start resulted in fast tickover until warmed up. Last couple of weeks, cold starting has led to either immediate stalling of the engine or engine hunting (speeding up then falling back close to stalling several times) Only prevention is a bit of throttle as the engine kicks into life, which I guess isn't a good for it. Any clues?

{Obviously you think that the 3 separate requests asking for the year and engine details to be included in the subject header don't apply to you!} Read more

Is the motor not still under warranty?

I'd have though the toyo dealer would soon have this sorted.

Hi, I want to access the particulate fluid ECU on my car to read and clear down DTC's contained within it so I can do this as I go along looking at things for problem diagnosis. I have a fairly (or very) technical question.

Does any one know if the Particulate filter ECU be accessed like in the same way as other modules of the ECU by setting the headers in a terminal session? If so (and this is the biggy) does anyone know the physical address or how to find out what this is? Also is there anywhere that I may be able to find commands to reset the fluid counters?

Is there an absolute drink-drive limit for cyclists, or is their limit, as I think, "any amount as long as they can still control their bicycles properly", and that the "breathalyser" does not apply to them.

Perhaps this should be in IHAQ - if so, apologies. Read more

What's the way of getting the most benefit from these (when driving in fog)? Fogs plus dipped beams or fogs alone? Read more

Lud

Oh and DON'T forget to put your front wipers on intermittent in fog; sometimes the
droplets will make it look worse from inside the car than it really is!

Good point Ed V. Even that hardly seems to work though in some kinds of greasy heavy fog.
