Simple but pertinent : I have moved , lost some post , how do I know If my car ( this one is a rarely used hobby vehicle ) has outstanding fines against it ? am afraid of using it in town and returning to find it gone .. Read more

What happened to the zebra striped envelopes they pin to the windscreen? Or is levying
of parking fines all done by remote control in London?

See today's news item:

"... it has led to a massive fraud where the parking attendant claims that the ticket was put on the vehicle or handed to the driver when neither was the case. As a result, the first the motorist knows of the parking ticket is when they get a document called a Notice to Owner in the post, claiming they haven?t paid the parking ticket.
When I uncovered this scam nearly five years ago, I christened it the Ghost Ticket, .."

"..In the new legislation the government has sneakily inserted a provision that where a parking attendant has started to write a ticket and the motorist drives away, they can send the ticket by post. The opportunities for fraud are astonishing and in my view ?legalize? the issue of Ghost Tickets. .."

Hi, before throwing myself at the mercy of a garage, I thought I would see if anyone could help with my little problem.
I have a 2002 51 reg C5 110bhp HDI with close approaching 100k miles.
A strong smell of diesel and small tell trale drip from back of sump tray lead me to have a good look today under the bonnet and I found that the fuel pipe with two nuts going inyto the high pressure pump is leaking albeit lightly. Tried to nip up with open end spanner but no real movement, and in any case did not want to make anything worse on a Sat afternoon!
Before I go further is there any dangers in disconnecting this joint and perhaps using a fluid lock tight here to try and cure.
This is definitely the source of leak.
Additinally along the top of the rocker cover little pools of oil are collecting, above the cylinder head and above the injectors. Not really sure of the source of this? Could it be the rocker cover gasket needs renewing. Father has similar car with same oil collecting too and his has only 35K on clock.
Has anyone tried the 10K Boost clean on thsi engine, and if so I understand it is sprayed in after the MAF . Oh yes I had the headgasket replaced nearly two years ago)
Any ideas would be gratefully received.
Thanks

Well, replaced the pipe today and all went fine....apart from leak still there!
Appears to be from the nut that is threaded nto the fuel pump which the pipe I replaced secures to on the left hand side.

I am hoping a replacement nutwill cure, any advice please?

>>wouldnt it be cheaper to send the goods by boat for the 300 days that its not frozen?
>>
There are several routes to different mines.
The routes consist of icy road, frozen lake, icy road, frozen lake etc
So I guess not practical to use boats. i.e. getting a boat there plus jetties etc.
Some of the loads are pretty big and all in one lump.
I thought maybe a hovercraft for the smaller loads but I guess that has all been "explored".

Robots have been installed in several filling stations in the Nederlands. They will fill your car up while you just sit there. How good is that? Read more

Actually thinking about it I can see it being a good idea for a depot for instance with a fleet of vehicles which are usualy same make & models, needing to fill up after every run or shift etc.. could speed opearations up .. if it was to work successfully that is.

I have just fitted parking sensors to my 2005 Mercedes Vito. Now the service indicator is flashing advising its 720 days overdue a service! Have you any ideas what I have done & how do I rectify it? Read more

elekie&a/c doctor

I can't see there being any connection between fitting parking sensors and service indicator. The system can be reset by sequencing the "0" button with ignition key on/off.Look in the handbook under Asysst .Perhaps a service is due and the system is correct or it has not been reset previously.hth

Recently noticed when idling in neutral when the clutch is engaged (i.e. foot not on pedal), it makes a horrible metallic rattling noise which disappears as soon as the clutch is disengaged. Also a bit "whiney" sounding when accelerating. Clutch on its last legs (presume it's the original, car's done 80k), or something worse?

Yorkiebar you were right - it's currently having the gearbox rebuilt. The input shaft bearing had gone, and there was barely any friction material left on the clutch either, so i'm having a new bearing kit fitted, along with a new clutch. Not a hugely expensive job, but I'm lumbered with a Chevrolet Matiz in the meantime!

My housemate now wants a car. He's been working the last two years nearly to save up for one and passed his driving test in December, but he has limited experience of driving. Nonetheless he wants to buy a car for £5k with his parents saying they'll pay for his insurance provided it is group 5 or lower.

He wants: something with "street cred", is easy and nice to drive, can carry 4 ppl in comfort on long journeys. Reliability and cheap running costs do factor in...

I said Focus mk1. He said too common and no "cred". Any suggestions? Read more

How about the new model Clio - just over budget if bought privately

I think these look great, although perhaps the 1.2 would be a bit weak.

I have a Focus Mk 1 and it's great to drive, gives no trouble.

Dealers cannot lose whatever happens - sell it on at a profit if returned ..

So what about the 4x4's that are coming back now that are practically worthless?

I do agree that there's an element of conning people with PCPs - I know people who pay a deposit and think they're going to get it back at the end of the deal - but if you get the right deal, and your circumstances suit it, then some aren't bad. A lot of people do want that peace of mind of having the car covered by warranty and needing minimal servicing. So it costs them £150/£200/mth or whatever - there's no danger of a £1000 repair bill and a load of hassle that you could get with an older car.

The people who make money out of these deals are the manufacturer finance arms - they buy the cars at huge discounts. dealers love PCPs because at 3yrs the customer has to do something - either keep the car, hand it back or change it for a new one. The key point is that can't just drift on without doing anything - they have to take some sort of action and the dealer has the chance to get them into another PCP and carry on the cycle.

Or perhaps not, there must alweays be a reason for the price. However this is well within the manufacturers warranty. I am still wary though after seeing a 18 month Corsa with gudge in the oil filler cap

What sort of reasons would a trader sell at the private price, it is difficult to find a private sale selling at the private estimates by What Car?

What should I look out for?

Import invalidating warranty?
Stolen and Recovered?
Just Stolen!
VIN not same as on registration document
Major Crash?
Major faults not covered by the Warranty are there any?

or perhaps the car doesn't fit in with the sort of car they sell and they want to get rid of it quick? Then again if it seems to good to be true....

I'm looking to buy a car in the United Arab Emirates. Everyone seems to buy new here, so I thought I'd be canny and look in the second-hand market...

But all the second-hand 4WDs on the market are the full size Land Cruiser/Touareg/Cayenne/Jeep size and seem overly big for my needs.

Subaru is offering a brand new Forester 2.5X with full leather interior and free servicing for under UK£12 grand. I've never driven or own a Subaru before but I recognise that they have their fans on this forum.

Two questions - is the 160HP engine powerful enough to give the car some poke, in view of its 4WD drivetrain and brick-shape aerodynamics? And will it roll like a barge in corners? I want to like the car but am a bit worried that the car will be a dullard/sluggard, and because it is not a "proper"-size 4WD will not hold much value? Read more

We have had a 2.0Turbo Forester in the family for over three years. It is an auto with just 175bhp and light pressure turbo, so very similar to the latest 2.5X with auto. In fact you can't buy the 2.5 non turbo Forester here, its 2.0 with 163bhp or 2.5Turbo only.

Ours was certainly quick enough for long distance trips and was very comfortable. Assuning you have high profile tyres the ride will be superb, even our Turbo on low profile had a good ride. Strongly recommended.

My only criticism is that the interior is a bit plain and not very big compared to the exterior size. However the driving position is just perfect.
