I didn't see it happen, but another rider of one of these rapid modern semi-scooter things came off on the same corner outside the house where the rider of a stolen scooter hit a turning car, fell off and scarpered just a few weeks ago prompting a post from me. The rider was lying in the carriageway attended by concerned passers-by, some on their mobiles. He moved an arm so was alive.
The ambulance took a good five minutes to arrive, perhaps ten. The traffic built up a bit because one carriageway was blocked. Plod, who are only five minutes away down the road, only two with full blues and twos, arrived five minutes after the ambulance, donned hi-vis and started to direct the traffic.
The medics took their time as they always do. Eventually they had the guy half naked and with wires on him. When they took his boots off he yelled very loudly, so I guess has a broken leg. I hope nothing worse.
The scooter was still parked on the single yellow at the end of my block last time I looked, not apparently badly damaged (as the stolen one was).

Seat Ibiza 57plate 1.4 petrol sport 85 PS
Hi all,
Dad has picked new car up today. As part of his works policy he can have a new car every 6 months for a reasonably monthly fee. He originally wanted an ibiza 1.4 tdi 75PS for the better mpg having had the jetta 1.9 tdi 105ps before. However the lease co made a admin error and delivered the petrol 1.4 in same spec. SO having found out the diesel couldnt be delivered for 3 weeks (had to be 08 plate) he decided to take the petrol.
Just a query about the mpg really. On the 80 mile trip home the avearge read 42mpg. I know cars have to be run in and what would he expect after that? Any owners or not experince handy here.
He drives normal and work and back in week and possibly a day trip at the weekend Read more
I have some aftermarket alloys, but the central hole is larger than the hub, whereas the original ones are a snug fit. The wheel nuts are tapered.
Is it ok to run them as-is, or do I need to fit spacers so that the wheel is snug on the hub? Read more
Its been my experience with aftermarket alloys that are universal hubbed (is that the right term), that they are usually supplied with a collar to make them a snug fit on the hub.
I doubt very much if you would get them central without being hub centric, and i think you'll have to make enquiries with the manufacturer or supplier to send some centres.
Bought some very expensive French alloys (very nice though), and the supplier sent the wrong collars, only oversize by about 1 mm, didnt really notice when fitting, soon did driving down the road on ovals though.
I think virtually all alloys are hub centred nowadays.
Hope that monster trucks ok, we thought about one of them.
My reverse lights are not coming on and I seen advice that the reverse light connections were underneath the gearbox so I had a look under there and found the two spade connection wires, which I cleaned some oil off.
I have found that the reverse light will stay on if I keep the gear stick pushed forward hard enough when I put it in reverse. Does this mean that the problem is not with the wires underneath the gearbox (which look OK) but with a contact somewhere on the gearstick??
I don't see how pushing the gearstick forward would make any difference to the wires underneath the gearbox. If I take the gear stick cover off, what kind of connection am I looking for and is it in an obvious place? I can't see it in the Haynes manual. Read more
The reversing light switch is on the underside of the 084 gearbox. To check the circuit and switch, remove the wires from the switch and join them together, with the ignition switched on the bulb should work.
GF is selling her Cinq due to buying a new car...
I'm wondering what the best place to advertise it would be...
Its already on Gumtree - 1 response and autoweb.co.uk - 0 responses.....
I guess it will have to be the local paper or autotrader, but autotrader want about £30ish and the local paper wants even more than that..... is it money well spent?

Problem started with engine dying just when about to change up a gear, say 1st. to 2nd. and 2 -3rd. Now it dies when driving along, and can be revived by dipping the clutch and /or changing down a gear. Also when stationery reving up to about 2500 revs, and holding the accel pedal constant, engine revs & dies cyclically. Engine ign warning light does not go out at any stage. Been to three garages inc. Ford Main dealers ( no catcalls please) and changed all components of the (Weber) fuel injection unit for previously used ones, with new gasket set. Any suggestions before I scrap the item ? Read more
Gee, thanks Rattle, maybe I'll just go and forget I ever had a Fiesta........only joking, I think. Perhaps things will look better when I get back and start trying to find the fault. There again , maybe they won't ! Still, thanks again for the input. Could you try very hard to find a nice easy answer next time maybe ??

Dear all,
It's a sad little tale. Got our new Mazda 323F 1.8SE (2001 Y) just after christmas. Nice car, 70k miles, all working, really liked it. From a dealer in Maidstone, gave us a cracking trade in for Mrs APM's MX5, although we did pay a little over the odds (£3400). Mrs is pregnant, due August, so change in lifestyle beckons, change of car one of the first steps.
Anyway, early Jan, the Mrs, bit hormonal possibly, bumps a guy in a micra at a roundabout. Damage looks minor- bent bonnet. On inspection, however, seems the damage is more extensive- bonnet, bumper, rad (although it's not leaking), ac rad (although this is working too), sundry other things bent. Official cost to repair is about £2800, too close to the value of the car for ins co to pay. They've offered write off value (IRO £3200ish) or £2k as payment in lieu, car isn't written off- very reasonable I thought (impressed by Admiral generally- really helpful & understanding, actually).
Anyway, we're having our trusted local garage have a look at what the 'real' cost to fix would be, ie not an ins job, should know tomorrow or weds what this will be.
Here's the thing. I like the car very much, it ticks all of our boxes, would like to repair & hang onto it. The Mrs, however, is wary after all that's happened, and doesn't like driving it, even though it's perfectly safe to do so (Garage have reassured on this). I'm not sure if she will want to drive it even if it's fixed up properly- she's saying she's happy with our £600 150k volvo 940! If we take the cash, one problem is, the 323 of that era is rare, the SE even rarer- we'd be lucky to find such a nice one again.
So questions are:
1. Anyone been in a similar position? Is the wife likely to change her perception once the car's fixed?
2. If we can't find another 323, what are the alternatives (same size & age, japanese if poss)
3. Would we be mad to use a 15 year old Volvo estate as a baby car?
4. Depending on answer to 3, would it be worth hanging on to the damaged car post payout, using it until MOT & kicking straight what I could to keep it going?
Advice gratefully received!!
Many thanks,
Alex.

Thanks Rich- some wise words.
For what it's worth, the revised estimate was still pretty high, and the ins co have made a decent offer, so we've decided to write the car off and take the settlement. Seems sad- the Mazda is sitting outside on the drive looking very sorry for itself. Still, life goes on.
So, we should have about £3k for the payout, and can put in a bit more ourselves, so prob talking about £5k tops. I've had a look around, and there seem to be a selection of Almeras (lots), Corollas, Civics and Mada 3's about. The CBCB seems to suggest that none are terrible, but anyone have experience of which is nicest? I'm also lobbying for adding a little more and looking at a Leon Cupra, since I used to have one and absolutely loved it! I know HJ is very keen on these, and it was the car the wife and I courted in, so might get lucky (just got a promotion at work, which will help too)... Any problems come up with these as they age? I know about the coilpacks & cambelt changes, but any other issues?
Thanks in advance (again),
Alex.

I'm thinking of buying a set of Mont Blanc aero roof rails and a pair of Barracuda bike carriers - they come in slightly cheaper than the equivalent Thule. Anybody got any experience/comments ?
Cheers Read more
Not sure about the Mont Blanc ones but you could also check out Atera, which is sold by the Roofbox company (roofbox.co.uk) from memory. I have a set on my car, they were cheaper than Thule and work well. They could be worth a look .... I'm just considering getting their bike carrier too.... a Atera Giro AF.
ScottieP
That sounds pretty good for a car with a still tight engine. I would only expect him to get a few mpg more when its run in and measured exactlly.
