2000 1.4 - Clutch Rattling - GregSwain
Recently noticed when idling in neutral when the clutch is engaged (i.e. foot not on pedal), it makes a horrible metallic rattling noise which disappears as soon as the clutch is disengaged. Also a bit "whiney" sounding when accelerating. Clutch on its last legs (presume it's the original, car's done 80k), or something worse?

Greg.

Sorry, but sounds more like a gearbox fault than a clutch fault if the noise goes when clutch is depressed.

Could be the clutch thrust bearing.

Normally, clutch thrust bearing wear will show up as noise when pedal is pressed; not when its released! hence the gearbox problem suggestion.

Yorkiebar you were right - it's currently having the gearbox rebuilt. The input shaft bearing had gone, and there was barely any friction material left on the clutch either, so i'm having a new bearing kit fitted, along with a new clutch. Not a hugely expensive job, but I'm lumbered with a Chevrolet Matiz in the meantime!
