2003 Hdi 90 hp - engine chugging - aroundtoit
Can anyone help with a problem we have with our Peugeot 406 Hdi 90hp 2003 Siemens injection system :-

The problem is that at low revs ( 1500 ? 1900 rpm ) in 4th & 5th the car chugs or hunts, if the throttle is eased off and reapplied or you change down & increase the revs the drivability improves - pulls normally. It also seems to be underpowered but we put this down to emissions & Peugeot cutting back on the power to get it into the lower diesel taxation band.

The car has been with AP Diesel specialist for a few days & they have checked everything on the injection side, they have put 2 new valves in the injector pump & tried another set of injectors in it but could not find anything wrong in their tests & gave the fuel side an all clear, they suggested that it might be clutch or transmission.

It seems to me that occasional the car will respond better & that the problem is almost unnoticeable other times it is obvious. The car has done 100,000 but is ex-lease and we have all the service history, no mention of this problem in the records.

We have been putting injector cleaner in for a while because we thought that dirty injectors were the problem, we mainly use this cleaner every fill anyway ( Millers Sport )

{wish I had a penny for every time someone failed to put the year and engine details in the subject header as per the requests to do so. I could afford to retire}

A partially blocked catalyst could give these symptons?

Are there any sounds from exhaust like a cracking sound or tinkling?

You could have a loose section that moves around and blocks the system in the silencer box? Often the baffles corrode and move around.

Although MAF sensors are not a regular failure on HDi's; it might be worth checking the air-flow readings are up to spec.

I'd agree with that - my mate's 306 HDi 90 was giving running troubles, cleaning the MAF has cured it.
