04 2.0 TDCi (130hp) Fly wheel ? - mondeo08
My 102000 mile 2.0 130bhp Mondeo is playing up! Its a 54 plate generally motorway miles and has been dealer serviced. basically it starts from cold well though with a puff of black smoke. It is when warm that the problem occurs - when restarting it can often take 3/4 turns of the key and then it seems to idle on 3 cylinders with absolutely no power but then eventually clears and behaves normally. Its been slightly rough running for a while now and although I asked the main dealer to have a listen they reported back its normal noise and some are more noisy then others -' Ive got a noisy one!'
Its spent the day at a diesel injection specialists who have reported no significant faults aprt from one injector that need remapping but it was very minor. They say it is still very lumpy and have suggested that it could be the flywheel out of kilter and the engine is trying to compensate for the imbalance. It had a new clutch at 61000 miles but not the flywheel.
Any thoughts from all you very knowledgeable people?
Thanks

I thought the dual mass flywheel on one of these was usually changed along with a clutch. More costly yes. But part of the cost is dropping the suspension etc. that happens to fit clutch only anyway.

Engines have a long-established way of dealing with a flywheel that is out of balance: they break their crankshafts and/or destroy their main bearings.

Did dealer offer to replace the DMF when clutch was changed?

My own view is that this problem is not flywheel related, and that the fault is somewhere in the injection system.

Has anyone done a compression test? Does it knock at start-up or shutdown? Has the starter nose been checked for metal frag?
