Yesterday, after crossing from Carlisle to Sunderland in a fair amount of snow on the Military Road, the exhaust on the Panda 4x4 sounded as if it had blown on starting the engine. Fair enough, I thought, I had hit a few lumps of ice with the sump guard and may have done some damage.
This morning I got under the car and could find no exhaust leak. What I did find was a large lump of ice impacted into the the steel guard on the propshaft joint and hoiked this out.
Strangely, the exhaust noise disappeared. When it gets a bit warmer I'll take off the sump guard and check the front of the exhaust system, though this cannot have sustained damage due to its position.
I don't see how the ice on the propshaft could have caused this noise but could the low temperatures have done it? Read more

Sump guard off today, whole exhaust system checked and not a leak in sight. Exhaust now sounds normal.

Flicker

for nearly 10 months the orange glow plug warning light on the dashboard has been intermittently flickering on and off whilst driving. sometimes it lights up and stays on for a while and other times it justs illuminates for a few seconds.
on 2 occasions it has attempted to light up, though very weakly when attemptng to start the car but at the first attempt the engine won't turn over, but turning the ignition off and on again enabled the engine to start.
new glow plugs were fitted a year ago and a new battery was installed november 2007, after replacing the battery the fault stopped for aroud 2 weeks then re-appeared.
any help greatly appreciated.
also, passenger electric window will not work, any suggestions? Read more

Hi everyone. Can anyone advise on how the roof rail rubber inserts are fastened into place , how to take them out and replace. I have a rain water leak which does not appear to come from the windscreen nor from the radio aerial so could there be a leak through into the roof space from this area? There appear to be white plastic pegs from the rubber into recesses in the gulley but do they simply pull out and push back in ? the rubber does seem to be a poor fit and not forming a seal to the roof on the side where the rain appears.

Hi Guys badly need some help if possible!Heres my story: I purchased my 2001 X reg 2.2 CD auto [engine No: 11101966] on jan 03, it had FDSH 1 owner and a low milage of 36000 miles, but after only 5 months the timing chain went on me so it was taken to vauxhall who seemed to be astonished, saying 'it was Rare for timing chains to go' (LOL) but Luckily enough it was still under warranty so work was done free of charge.....But heres the problem. Its now 3 years on the Damn thing has gone yet again and vauxhall will not take any blame and are wanting over £2000 to fix it! (GULP) So what i need to know if possible Guys, are vauxhall at fault here? I have since read about the Timing chain problems on z2.2se engines and the replacement oil lube thingy (hex nut) and now i am thinking maybe vauxhall forgot to replace/udate some parts when they originally fixed the timing chain??.. Or do you think it would have gone again after only 30K and my car has always been serviced regulary by either Vauxhall or a Ford garage. Is it worth ringing up head office/customer supportor even taking this further with a solicitor as this should not happen!! Many thanks EDIT: I have since read a thread on the z22se forums and some say the chain will be covered for 60k or 6 years whichever comes first. True or False?

Vauxhall issue technical service bulletins to their dealers ....

The only one that I am aware of is Field Remedy: 1532, which is mentioned in detail on www.z22se.co.uk

That can be down to a dirty throttle body/butterfly.

Vehicle 16 months old, 22,000 miles, second service completed recently [a little early] and Citroen Exeter reports rear disks badly corroded and need replacing.

Althouth I am not an engineer this seems a little steep especially as it is not covered by the Warranty. Surely it's either a manufacturing issue [poor material or assembly] or pistons not moving freely in callipers [either factory assembly or subsequent servicing issue] . Servicing carried out at main dealer BEFORE suggested servicing interval.

Either way, the Citroen offer of paying for the parts still leaves me with a bill for £90+ in labour costs.

Do I grab the money and bite my tongue or is this a known issue worth fighting for?

Overall it's a good vehicle - a bit quirky - but a good vehicle. Read more

One son with Audi TT (18mths) had same problem with rears - argued and eventually got back labour but paid for parts.

Older son Lexus IS was similarly afflicted a bout 1 mth later - replaced under warranty and new pads foc. Quote - "after a service a Lexus should look and drive as new"
It appears anything apart from damage is covered for 3 yrs.

Should i buy a C5 2.0 16 V Petrol. 2004 for £4995 with 30 K on clock

Anybody know what sort of problems they get and expected average MPG.

Currently have a Xsara 1.8 Exclusive with 100 K on clock. This has been generally reliable and never let me down apart from worn suspension at front exhaust etc. Just getting a little bored of it and cost a fair bit this last year to keep going.

C5 is a lot bigger just a little worried by some poeple complaining about reliablity.

Road safety officials have criticised a man who faked his own death to avoid paying £180 speeding fines. Shafkat Munir pretended he was dead after being caught speeding on three occasions between January and February last year.

Munir, 26, of Mulberry Walk, Blackburn, Lancashire, posed as a man named Rashid Hussain and claimed that Shafkat Munir had died in Pakistan in 2002, but police enquiries revealed that Shafkat Munir - who since has been sentenced to 12 months imprisonment after admitting three charges of perverting the course of justice - was alive and well.

3 Tickets for speeding is a lot but 12 months inside is in a different league

In the (still) never ending search for a replacement car for 'er indoors, I've just been to see a Focus C-Max at a local Indy. It's a 1.6LX, FSH, 37000m, 1 owner, 54 reg. It's showing a screen price of £5995, but I said I'd seen it in the local rag for £5200 and he dropped to that immediately.

I've been researching the C-max and this seems to be a decent price. I've no trouble with the 1.6 engine as it will be a second (practical) car for the wife and kids. The only issues I can find on the petrol engine models are regular reports of air-con packing up. The dealer is a well established operation, with decent premises/workshops and certainly doesn't have an 'Arthur Daley' image. When I turned up unannounced this morning, the car was actually in the workshop having the passenger door/wing sanded in preparation for repair of a small scratch/dent. Had a good look and no sign of anything sinister.

I'll be looking to p/x our reliable but dull/small Hyundai Getz. 1.3 Gsi, 54 reg, 32000m. I didn't have the car with me but he said £2500-£3000 p/x. On that basis I'll take £3000 as the starting point. The deal I'd be looking for is the Getz and £2000 cash.

Thoughts on the deal appreciated as would any horrors I should look out for where the C-max is concerned. Read more

Well, that was short and sweet.

Arrived at the garage and as we walked up to the car, missus says "that's too big". Now this s despite me showing her a C-Max on numerous occasions and (I thought) getting an acknowledgment. Just shows she never listens to me.

I also looked at the wing and door that was being repaired on my last vist. It looked like it had been sprayed with a dozen tins of Halfords spray paint. I didn't even bother the salesman. We turned and walked off. (But not before showing her a 'normal' Focus and agreeing that would be a suitable replacement)
