Should i buy a C5 2.0 16 V Petrol. 2004 for £4995 with 30 K on clock
Anybody know what sort of problems they get and expected average MPG.
Currently have a Xsara 1.8 Exclusive with 100 K on clock. This has been generally reliable and never let me down apart from worn suspension at front exhaust etc. Just getting a little bored of it and cost a fair bit this last year to keep going.
C5 is a lot bigger just a little worried by some poeple complaining about reliablity.

Not sure if this is the HPI petrol or not. If it is HPI don't touch with a ten foot pole - virtually impossible to get running properly. Other petrol variants are OK though not as good as the diesels which are excellent.
If this is a 'facelifted' model it will be much better than the early cars. I now have a 2006 2.0 HDI VTR which I bought second hand back in July 2007 - I've done 7000 miles (total of 17,000 on clock) and it's never been back to the dealer since I took it out of the showroom - not even one single glitch of any kind.
So that's me asking for trouble tomorrow morning.......

I have both a 2003 2.0 HDI SX and a 2007 2.0 Exclusive Petrol Auto.
As Graeme says, if its an HPI (direct Injection) dont buy it!! Not at any price. My mate had one and it had to have a complete new engine at 20K. That didnt work either so it was taken away and never seen again. They are a complete waste of time. If its the standard 2.0 petrol, then go for it they are fine.
My 2003 model had a few warranty claims during the first couple of years...minor little things like a complete replacement rear axle, new steering column, indicator switchgear replaced twice, new rear suspension etc etc.
Then Citroen actually finished inventing the thing and the later models are just fine.
If its a facelift model with a standard petrol engine; buy it. If its an early shape model with the HPI engine; walk away.

It is a 2004 pre-facelift model. So old shape nose. I had heard the HPI engines were bad reading the reviews. How do you tell if a HPI or normal 16 valve.
It seams a normal aspirated one but how i can be absouletly sure.
I assume the price is about right. Mind you giving a grand for the Xsara and service/6 months tax 12m ths mot on the c5.
All seems to works well with windows, doors, petrol cap, drives well etc.
Sounds a little worry with your 2003 model. My Xsara has been a great car with nothing major at all especially for a citroen.

I think the one to avoid has "HPI 16" on the plastic cover on top of the engine.
And it will probably sound like a diesel at tickover.
All the fun and games on the 2003 model of mine was pretty much sorted within the first year and all under warranty. Since then it not missed a beat. Cant fault it. Lovely relaxed car to travel in.
The 2007 petrol model is now exactly 12 months old. No problems. If you get a good one they are lovely cars. If you pick up a bad one.....i guess they could be a complex nightmare. Just make certain its not an HPI; then check that all the knobs and switches work. If it all functions correctly, it should be a good purchase.
Im sure someone will come along in a minute and tell you to buy a Mondeo instead.

Easy way to identify the engine. Look at the VIN number at the base of the windscreen, or the back O/S of the engine bay, on on the ID plate under the back seat, or the logbook and see if it contains the letters RFN or RLZ.
RFN - good engine.
RLZ - bad engine. [Very, very, bad engine.]

It is a RFN on engine number so not a HPI. Any ideas what MPG i can expect i know quoted is 34 on combined cycle.
My existing Xsara does about 31 on work run just wondering what this would be.
Guess i will go and have another look at it. Unless i decide to go 2.2 Diesel. I did not like either the 1.8 petrol or 2.0 diesel a little 2 underpowered. Me a bit of a petrol head and have not really liked diesels.

My first C5 was a 2.2 HDI and it was certainly a great engine - the first diesel I had owned and I had absolutely no regrets in terms of power and refinement. However.....it blew its turbo (under warranty!) and had eventually to be disposed of because the head gasket went at 70,000 miles. Oddly enough, none of these faults was a characteristic of this engine at all - maybe I was unlucky.
Now I have the 2.0 '138' HDI which is actually smoother, faster and more economical than the old 2.2. Even from the earliest models many people claimed the ordinary 2.0 HDI was a more pleasant unit than the 2.2. As I say, though I did like it a lot to drive - reliability apart - but this latest VTR which I have has been better in every way and totally fault free.
If you haven't driven a Citroen diesel please try one before you decide. Forget any preconceptions about noise, sluggishness, vibration, smell etc. All of that went out with the ark years ago. The modern HDIs are superb units and after a few days adjustment to the different torque delivery of the diesel you'll grow to love it.
Good luck!
