Over in the technical forum, there is a discussion going on about Pug HDi's. these engines require elosys additive to, very simply, 'clean up' the exhaust gases. My question is this, do all new diesel engines have this 'additive' or is it just Pug derived engines. Apologies if this should have been posted in Technical, Mods, please feel free to move. I however think on some of the very
exotic diesels Audi and VW are bringing out soon they will be using a Urea
(yes you did read right) based fluid to cut down exhaust emmisions.

Yes; like the trucks are now, you'll soon be hauling around a 5-gallon tank of pig wee - don't be following the car that starts regenerating with a pipe leak.....

Why are diesel drivers whinging about DPF servicing costs? Greenoidism costs [wastes] money - think how much it costs petrol drivers in the same 50K period to drag a cat around.

Depending on consumption; you'll need around £5000-£25,000s worth of petrol. as having a cat costs at least 15% of that, thats £750-£3,750 in emission-reduction costs - makes £6-900 for a FAP-and-fill look cheap.

Can anyone give a knowledgable opinion regarding the value of a 'Y' plate 3.0 SE. Silver, 35k 2 owners, fsh, the owner would probably px it for a late(ish) Disco'

Car battery starting to show signs of age? ie, just drops enough voltage when cranking the engine to affect the feed to the stereo. Total guess though.

Hi, i have just been given a citroen ax dimension 954cc with the Teves calipers, when braking even at low speeds the brakes seem quite inafective even if i stomp on them as if trying to do an emergency stop, the car just gradually slows to a stop as if there isn't enough friction, and it takes quite some pedal pressure. The brakes are not spongy and the pedal doesn't need to be pumped and doesn't have excessive travel. If you roll down the driveway slowly and touch the pedal, all the four corners will brake with just a slight press, but any speed they are rubbish, ikt's like very bad brake fade but at slow speed, i daren't try them at high speed. I gave the brakes a checking over, rear shoes all even with plenty surface on them, left cylinder was leaking slighty so i renewed it and bled. No oil or contamination on the surfaces, then i checked the fronts, nearside pads still very thick as it only had new pads last year, offside i noticed that the outer pad has worn to half the thickness of the inner pad, i thought that maybe the caliper was seized but i tried the piston and it moves in and out with relative ease. The only thing i can think of that i have not checked is if the slider is sticking, but i cant see that making the brakes very poor even if it is. And finally, i realised when checking the bleeding procedure in the manual that i did it wrong, i did it rear right, rear left, front right, front left. it should be done diagonaly, but still i dont think this is causing the poor braking, i have bled every car i have ever had this way and always had good results. Its got me baffled. Read more

The Teves calipers slide on 2 pins, a meaty one at the top of the caliper and a weedy one at the bottom. In my limited experience you are likely to find the bottom pin well and truly seized and the pads may be seized in the caliper as well. If the caliper doesn't float properly, only the pad operated by the piston will wear. The Torx bolt for the bottom pin is supposed to hide inside a rubber tube with a plastic cap but these break and let crud in. If the discs are in good nick and the pads of reputable make I have found the AX braking performance to be good. I would persevere because I'm going to guess that the RH caliper is the only thing half working at the front; the left being completely seized.

I've been doing some weekend swim teaching in Ripon lately; the perfect excuse to use the bike to combine work with a gentle blast down the A1 and a relaxed amble past weekend traffic on the A61. Today my chickens came home to roost and Mrs H, doubtless jealous of the grin infecting my features on recent Saturdays and Sundays, demanded to be taken out on the bike in search of a decent coffee.

We go through the palaver every ride of connecting up the Nady intercom so we can chat as we tootle along, but the damn speaker hurts my ear and Mrs H does not enjoy using her end either.

To get to the point; we are both ready for a change of helmet. I know Bluetooth helmets can be bought to connect to a mobile, sat nav or an iPod (whatever that is for), but can Bluetooth helmets talk to one another? Any recommendations? Any drawbacks? Any ideas? Over to you ...

I've got a 96 plate Nissan Almera 1.4. Stopped the car at a friend's house without turning it off and then put the car in the first gear to drive off and then the gear won't change. Now the gear knob is in a position far below than where you'll have the second gear engaged but the car is definitely in the first gear. I can't change the gear even when the car is switched off. I've even tried forcing it out of the gear its engaged in but without any luck. The clutch seems to be OK because I turn the car on with the clutch down and when I release the car the car starts moving. Its really dark now so can't see much but I could see few drops of fresh oil under the car when parked in the driveway. Please advise what could be wrong?

'A firefighter has died and three others have been injured after a fire engine crashed in Clackmannanshire.
John Noble, 46, died when the fire appliance left the A91 road between Tillicoultry and Dollar at about 1330 GMT and struck a tree.

The crew had been responding to a call from a primary school after a smoke alarm activated.

Firefighter Alan Robertson was also seriously injured in the crash and two others suffered minor injuries.

Mr Robertson was airlifted to Glasgow's Southern General.

The other two officers are being treated at Stirling Royal Infirmary.

One firefighter in the appliance was uninjured.

An investigation has been launched into the crash. The road is expected to be closed in both directions for some time."

We won't know the cause for a few months yet but once again, we have to ask the question , " Is it right to risk lives to save lives ? " Read more

My Volvo S80 2.5T 53 reg, which I bought to do 4,000 miles/year (for 7k last April), may soon be doing an additional 17,000 miles/year through a work change

I get about 23mpg on my usual short runs, and I guess I might get about 28mpg on the work run. (this is below the official figures (probably because of my driving style) which is 30.7mpg combined).

So I get through 175 gallons of unleaded at the moment, and would need to add another 600 gallons to this.

Petrol is about £4.80/gallon now, so 775 gallons is £3,720/year.

The question is, should I get a diesel to cut costs or do I stick with the petrol. Bearing in mind that I work contracts, and the contract is likely to last about 12 months, maybe a little longer, and my likely next contract would be in London, where I wouldn't need the car.

Any thoughts, and car suggestions?

The only other complication is that the Mrs. is taking her driving test (end of Feb), and would prefer not to haul around a large exec saloon, but I'm not sure there's much we can do about that as it would be madness to buy a second car and for me to drive the fuel-hungry Volvo 70 miles/day while she kept the less thirsty car for occasional trips to the supermarket. Of course any trade-in of my car would probably cost about £1k in dealer profit, etc. Read more

I keep on SORN a 1986 USA Ford pick up with a 6.9 diesel engine , parked off -road in North London. I read that the LEZ ( Low Emissions Zone ) will hit all large old diesels with something mad like a £200 daily ' tax ' . This vehicle is a PLG with a shown gross weight of 2900 kgs, so below small trucks starting at 3500 kgs . I only use it twice a month between May and about November - apart from registering this left hooker on foreign plates , what can I do - will this ludicrous Ken charge apply to this vehicle ??

There's a Q&A and a vehicle specific compliance check on the TFL website: -
www.tfl.gov.uk/roadusers/lez/default.aspx

OTOH it seems exactly the sort of vehicle a low emission zone should be challenging. Why keep it if the utilisation is so low? Oh, and Ken says he's going as far out of his way as he can to enforce against vehicles on foreign plates.
